Okay, so him coming late didn’t matter at all—whenever the standings of current competitors were flashed he was not surprised to find himself near the rock-bottom of the pack.

Which was not surprising as he did infinitely better at non-traditional challenges.

However, people were suspecting he was throwing his matches—however, him threatening to smack whoever said that with his crutch usually shut them up.

So here was Alexei, hanging around one of the vacant arenas, sitting down to catch his breath.

Near Alexei sat another gentleman, draped in the neutral colors of a suit. A thick coat hung over his shoulders while he leaned his weight atop his thighs, eyes shut as he breathed in and out slowly.

Besides him, a single Riolu sat, cross legged and with his hands resting at his thighs as well. He breathed in and out in much the same pattern as the man.

Meditation, it was.

Raki was meditating for self-control.

Gwyar claimed it was to instruct Raki, but he just wanted to clear his thoughts.

He looked up from his musing and saw that there was an adorable Riolu sitting down—wait a second, sitting down? Meditating?

How even?

He remembered when his own Lucario, Vincent, was in his younger form—a literal ball of energy.

Curious, he got up from where he was—and was followed by someone equally rambunctious trailing behind him.

Honestly, if he had the chance to go on a Pokémon journey seventeen years ago? He’d have chosen Oshawott.

“Are you—free for a battle?” he inquired of the other man.

Even before Gwyar responded or even opened his eyes, Raki's own were already snapping wide open, a smile spreading over his tine maw as he leapt off the bench and barked an affirmative in his trainer's place, waving at both Alexei and his Oshawott.

That little shit, he had been pretending!

Releasing one last, long breath, Gwyar's eyes opened, the man nodding.

"... Ah. You are Alexei Ivanov." Gwyar observed for a moment, cupping his chin in thought. He had been waiting for some time now for his turn to arrive at the man's gym...

As good a chance as any.

"Yes, thank you. I would much appreciate a chance to fight you... Rather, Raki would." He said as he stood, poppig his neck as he stood. "Shall we be on our way?"

He began making his way to the arena, followed closely by his Riolu.

If he had his way, by now Rakka would be a Samurott. However, life had a weird way of screwing people over.

“O-oh,” he exclaimed, a little embarrassed.

“W-wait a second, didn’t you send in a—” he trailed off as he racked his brains.

“Well… this tournament thing is so weird. Says that we can award our gym badges regardless of the battle format,” he remarked before noting that the Riolu was excited and wanted to scrap.

So was the Oshawott, even if she didn’t betray her excitement.

“Sorry, little slow. Still injured,” he apologized as he leaned on the crutch, careful not to put pressure on his right foot.

Once he was on his side of the arena, he nodded.

“You can go first.”

Gwyar waited until the injured man had made it to his side before startings off at the other's behest. By which I mean of course, he gave Raki a simple nod, and from then on, it was all Battle Routine Set™.

Try to sue him for a thought crime, FERNANDO SILPH.

Raki starting things of quick, launching forward and swiftly covering the distance between himself an his opponent to strike at her with a shoulder strike, intent on sending her hurtling across the arena and immediately start piling on the pressure.

Raki used Quick Attack.

“Chop!” he began, watching as the Riolu approached, ready to bring the fight to her.

The Water-type got ready before detaching the shell on its front and wielded it like a fan, attempting to catch the Riolu in a Razor Shell attack before backing away as fast as her wobbly feet could carry her.

Who knew what the Fighting-type would bring to the table?

“Keep an eye on your opponent,” he said from behind, shifting his weight slightly so he didn’t put pressure on his right leg.

Oshawott used Razor Shell!

Raki's eyes widened as he suddenly grind to a halt and bent his spine as far back as it would go, knees hitting the ground and sliding over it as the swing whipped over him dangerously.

She was good, but Raki wasn't done just yet!

The puppy's spine swung back up like a spring as aura surged around it, launching him forward as a blue glow flooded his head, attempting to swing his head into the Oshawott's own 'noggin!

Raki used Counter.

The familiar glow of the attack suddenly turned the power of the Razor Shell on the one that had thrown the attack.

Howling out of surprise, the Oshawott stamped down before charging forward, scalchop forgotten in her thirst for Revenge!

“Rakka! Calm down!” he called from where he stood, but the Water-type was blind to the rage. That attack was perfect!

But how dare the Riolu attack her using her own attack against her?!

Oshawott used Revenge after being hit!

Raki got blasted back by the Oshawott's vengeful spirit, bouncing off along the floor like a ragdoll before his feet found their placing once again.

His posture lowered, his feet spread and he smashed his paws on the Earth before slowly rising them up towards his opponent as he slowly raised his gaze at her howled in fury, eyes shining crimson red as the damage he had just sustained converted into pure energy.

He was copying her own Revenge maneuver!

He launched forth like lightning, arms weaving through the air as he grind to a stop before her and swung his body, bringing his back to try and crash into the Oshawott with a burst of aura!

Raki used Copycat. Raki used Revenge!

The Oshawott was beyond reasoning, quickly taking a deep breath and firing off a powerful, hose-like jet Hydro Pump at the incoming Riolu—wow, why was this little—pest—copying and mirroring her moves?!

First it was the Razor Shell, now it was the Revenge—okay, was the Riolu fast enough to copy this incoming attack?!

Forced back by the mirrored gesture, there was a scowl now on the Water-type’s face.

Oshawott used Hydro Pump after being hit!

She wanted to play THAT game? FINE! HE COULD, as a matter of fact, copy THAT!

Reeling back his fist the little puppy suddenly punched at the Oshawott from far away-

Unleashing a large torrent of water at her in the process!

This is going to get endless unless this is nipped in the bud! He thought as the Oshawott cackled before taking the reflected Hydro Pump head-on.

That didn’t affect her too much, because she was a Water-type!

Now the problem was trying to close the distance and bring this to a quick end.

As she approached, she did a strange dance—which was actually a Dance of Swords to get ready for an up-close and personal clobbering!

Oshawott takes the attack; and then used Swords Dance while approaching the Riolu!

As she did her swords dance, Raki marched up to her, taking broad steps while his brow twitched.

Maybe she was waiting for the other to approach, after all—

And then the Riolu came strutting up and bonked her on the head before she could smack him with the sharp shell she’d dropped earlier out of surprise!

Howling in pain, the Oshawott then attempted to swat the Riolu with another Razor Shell attack.

However, it was too much punishment already—and the Oshawott collapsed not too long after the attempt at swiping at the Riolu one more time.

Oshawott takes the attack; and then used Razor Shell while trying to bonk the Riolu before collapsing of exhaustion!
