his vs seeker app matches him with someone named gwyer wledig. he likes the first name and hopes his was that nice. then again, 'kyle' has its own charms.

he waits for the other to come to the designated spot of the match: a corner of the beach where it's almost just pure sand outside of beach umbrellas on the corner and rock formations on the background.

on his hand was a can of charjacola. he sips on its mouth, tasting the metallic tinge of the aluminum, as his head swings from one direction to the other, trying to pick this gwyar out from the crowd.

Gwyar had no hopes of possibly winning a fight were kyle lopez was involved. Not with Raki as his main and only choice, at any rate.

But the little puppy was nothing if not enthused at a chance to take a swing at the literal top dog of Hoenn, so before long, they arrived at the meeting spot, one eager, one reluctant.

"Good afternoon, Mr. Lopez." Gwyar said as he arrived, bowing politely to the young man. "It's a great fortune to fight someone of your level while... lacking entirely any qualifications."

He said the last part wryly, keenly aware of just how many badges he was missing before even being allowed to even think about fighting the champion.

Raki had no such useless thoughts. The little puppy was quick to rush up to Kyle and yip up at him with an eager grin.

kyle flashes a smile back to the riolu that approached him before turning to the trainer.

"huh? oh! don't worry about it. i'll get replaced someday anyways."

not completely false, but it's a poor way to downplay his own achievements. he has done better on doing so, but since this event is for fun, there's no need to sweat everything else.

"nice to meet you too, gwyar. you always talk formal?"

the question was purely out of curiosity. not that he has any problems with it besides someone with a humble background being intimidated by such choice of words. he's working on it though.

Raki seemed charmed by the champion's response, smiling wide.

Truly a dog whisperer as the rumours said, this man.

Gwyar merely chuckled at the man's humble response and question. He didn't think there could be many who could replace a man of his achievements, but time would tell. Nobody could have expected what happened to Bailey Cooper either.

"Yes, I'm afraid so. Let's just say I was raised in a... peculiar fashion." How many knights existed in this day and age? Precious few, he wagered, and most of them found in Galar's and Kalos' most reclusive (and backwards) settlements.

rummaging through the holster by his hip, he tries to pick out a pokemon before remembering that not every battle is the same and he shouldn't be jumping to conclusions. kyle stops and clarifies.

"let's get started then? any preferred formats?"

the pokeball was already on his hand anyways. he'll just adjust accordingly depending on how many mons were needed.

Gwyar chuckled. He decided to take that as a compliment.

As the question was spoken, the Riolu hurried back to his trainer, who crouched in front of him and placed his hands on the little guy's head.

"This little one is the only pokemon I've been using for the tourney. He's going through a training montage, you see." The man said with a playful grin, matched only by his little Riolu.

"A 1v1, please. Of course, pick whichever pokemon you prefer. So long as he learns something from the champion, I'll be content."

he takes out a pokeball that he already was holding on. the turtonator appears and stands between kyle and the riolu on the other side of the field.

"hope he has fun," he says, smiling at the sight of the riolu once again before turning his head back to gwyar. "do you want the first move?"

"Do you, Raki?" The man asked the puppy as he jumped from one leg to the other, bursting at the seams with energy as he nodded before he blasted forth without warning!

Moving quickly, the little puppy moved in a zig zag pattern before attempting to drop kick the Turtonator in the chest!

That was bound to go well.

at least it didn't hit the shell.

"smog."

the riolu comes up and goes to fight in close quarters, with the turtonator not expecting the force to back such attack from a small pokemon. kyle knows not to underestimate, though his pokemon apparently does not.

upon impact, the turtonator releases poisonous smoke, as if it was squeezed out of its lungs. it spreads all over, blocking vision as well as forcing kyle to back away a bit and cover his nose.

Raki grinned as his opponent was seemingly winded by his attack, though his coughs soon filled the air as the smog flooded the area, the little pokemon stumbling back and away from Kyle and his Turtonator... And eventually losing them entirely in the weird, disgusting mist.

He began barking at the air as a show of defiancy, swinging his arms wildly to try blow it all away- to no avail.

He really wished he knew force palm now...

once it had its breather, the turtonator now has his back turned properly. it knows how much a riolu can do to it, so it's not taking it easy anymore.

"dragon pulse."

aiming at the sounds of swishing, the turtonator fires its dragon pulse. the blue color of the flames hide well under the mist of purple, but the fact that it's still bright, burning fire still makes it obvious.

Big, blue and obvious or not, it's still fire that came out of the smoke at high speed. Raki can only manage a yelp before being blasted back, bouncing along the pavement with a yowl and groan.

Pushing himself off the floor, the little guy glared in the general direction the blast came from before gathering his hands together and generating a big, blue and obvious fire ball of his own to launch at the dragon!

the copycat wasn't expected, since kyle completely forgot about the possibility of it happening. nevertheless, a defensive pokemon such as a turtonator should at least be able to eat one or two of those up.

the turtonator already has its defenses up after the attack. preparing to protect against the move was simple for it. this time, it stops moving altogether, shell still pointed towards the source of the attack.

kyle doesn't say anything since he feels like his turtonator would've at least made a sound if it got hit. when he connects to his own pokemon's battle plan, he waits.

Raki was still blind; whether his attack worked or not, he couldn't be sure. His enemy was completely silent, which wasn't good. He hadn't reacted audibly when he had drop kicked him earlier either...

What was he supposed to do...?

The little puppy began to cough more loudly, feeling light headed. Maybe he should run out of the smog...

Raki was poisoned!

when nothing else much happens, the turtonator decides to take initiative.

an incinerate lights up the gases. flames burst from the turtonator as it fills the area with embers and flames with the combustion.

"oh, wait. that's not the plan," he utters, his calm tone not matching his words.
