like most of kyle's ideas, everything he suggests, bar the ones for missions required for his job, appear to be random passing thoughts that come out of his mouth unfiltered.

he already brought his growlithe though, signifying that the thought has evolved into something more.

"i mean something that isn't entirely for battling but--"

kyle leans down and picks up the dog, dangling the growlithe in front of matias while its tail wags, ignorant of the fact that the man in front of him has killed pokemon for mere points during conflicts with rocket.

"--something like a pet."

kyle so easily waves off the issue like it wasn't important. apathy comes with its advantages, and his nonchalant approach on things pushes him to move forward without the burden of worry.

thanking the server that delivers him his drink, he turns back to gabe.

"do you think i should go back?" he asks. "i want a personal answer, not the kind of response you give to look righteous in front of your crush."

he always urged him to be carefree despite his good nature. the boy was the epitome of a wannabe hero that it makes kyle sick, but he's grown on him, like every other shithead in his life.

kyle props his head up against the surface of the table as he stares into gabe's eyes, forcing him to awkwardness until he gives an answer he'll be satisfied with.

the border was unexplainable, even for other spirits who have been here longer than the portal to this dimension existed. abstract concepts were easier to accept as concrete ones. it made zev's explanation hold just as much merit as any other interpretations one can surmise.

"but that's the thing. you can't."

this was the domain's bread and butter. illusions are more likely to appear than visions. there's nothing to prove whether one is real or not, especially when fiction and reality had already started melding together as well in the real world.

it only gets better since it wouldn't be out of character for kyle to remain neutral, neither swaying the other's opinion to coincide with his nor outright lying about it.

"would you even believe it if i said i wasn't? that's what a hallucination would say."

the days following a certain date at the beach, kyle would find matias on his home rather than elsewhere. perhaps it's the calm before the storm, but he finds his presence where he's supposed to be reassuring.

he comes in without warning, opening the door to let him and his dog in. matias most likely already knows of his presence the moment he set foot in his ranch anyways.

"hello. you look good."

the short greeting seems cordial enough to mask the true nature of his visit, which was to be matias' warden during his time under league's orders to be under supervision.

"i'm surprised you're content with just sitting around now."

he smiles at the result.

this was what he'd been trying to do with the other silph cups held from before. he's content to be in the middle of things, and more so when he sits perfectly at the middle of the race's placements.

while he would have normally apologized to , or reacted to any other happenings to the race, he figures it's better to concentrate more on not falling from his wailord's back, especially with the coming obstacle

"here it goes."

there's no need to instruct the wailord. what needed to be done was obvious, albeit tricky. the large pokemon splashes from the water as it attempts to maneuver into the landing area, with kyle praying for best results.

days before the fateful events of mt. chimney, kyle finds himself with terrakion.

while the pokemon has found itself paired with kyle, it neither has the same connection with his patron, nor did it have a similar understanding of what kyle has in mind. they knew each other, but the connection of a legend with its avatar cannot be replicated easily.

the sword of justice visits them on their backyard, away from where most of his dog pokemon frolic. the two share a talk before the champion turns to his household and shouts.

"noah!" he calls. "can you come here for a moment?"

kyle isn't sure what he was doing right now, but given that it's a day off, he's probably washing the dogs or something.

"correction: ho-oh may be immortal, but he isn't invincible."

unlike gabe's older brother, kyle looks more like a brother to gabe because he doesn't look like his parent. navy does look like he's around twenty years older than him due to a trip to a distortion, as well as other factors like stress and other substances (guess).

he makes himself comfortable on his seat and orders himself a drink. while he can't say he likes alcohol, nothing was stopping him from immersing himself.

"i got myself killed on purpose," he finally answers. "if ho-oh tells you that it's possible, you would want to try it too, right?"

kyle didn't actually want to try it, but the hypothetical often tends to differ from reality.

that's what he knows about himself at keast.

a part of him second guesses himself, as if there's something nostalgic about heading out to the wilds and sleeping under the constellations that tell a story of the past. something tells him matias was the same.

"but i guess we can take a-"

just as he was planning to check their supplies, he realizes that it was lighter.

kyle puts the backpack in front of him and opens its contents, showing it to matias. his mouth is agape, unable to explain the missing contents of the bag.

navigation within the border was not something that he can ever understand. nothing makes sense, and of the entire time he has spent exploring it, the one thing he understood is that emotions and sentiments rule over this dimension.

perhaps something similar brought him here when another lost soul calls for him.

"hi, that's my name. i'm kyle."

the nonchalant greeting comes first before his figure steps out of the mist.

his image appears in traditional johtonian clothing. wooden slippers make a distinctive sound as he steps out, appearing to check behind him first before turning to zev.

"oh?"

an eyebrow is raised when he sees him. seemingly surprised, it takes him a moment to shift his expression from shock to a lazy smile. he doesn't expect him, but something unexplained ironically becomes the feeling's explanation.

"are we even close enough friends to coincidentally find each other in this place?" he humors.

"i was wondering when you'll take your turn," kyle greets in a more carefree tone. "matias and melody already got their turn."

he gets up from his seat, lighting up a screen overhead with their pokemon of choice. callan may not use normal-types exclusively, but it is what he was grown to be known for during his stay as a gym leader.

kyle decides to use it as his theme for this match.

"i was never the best when it came to ruled matches anyways, so i guess the changes just made sure i kept the seat." he wasn't married to the title, but some things were better if he was not to leave it. "but i have to say that things somehow got more lenient thanks to it."

he sighs. it's a consequence that escaped him during the planning phases, but whether that was a good thing or not was left up to interpretation. kyle was supposed to be the lenient one, and he isn't sure how to feel about the entire operation slowly fitting to his preferences.

the top champion then releases two pokemon: a dunsparce and an oranguru.

"anyways, let's get started."

"you're oddly respectful this time," he teases as he notices matias' behavior.

the usual reaction of his companion during these kinds of situation would be indifference or false courtesy. instead, kyle doesn't feel a hint of insincerity with the action.

he smiles, shrugs, and leads the way out.

no other words were said on their way home, but kyle takes a note on how matias probably likes being in the service of a kingdom once again, make believe or not.

each pokemon that the poachers have in their camp were taken in a pokeball rather than released in the wilds. this might not be their ideal home, and invasive species were a serious deal.

he was on the middle of making sure he hasn't left any of the pokemon behind when noel checks in on him.

"just keeping these pokemon to transfer over to the rangers," he answers. "i'll leave it to them to release them back to the wilds."

with the work done, he waves goodbye to terrakion. the few that reside in the same forest was voices their concerns to the pokemon, wherein it separates them from the ones kyle will take to the rangers.

"oh, yeah! thanks for the help, by the way." it was appreciated given that it greatly decreased the amount of work he needed to be done. "ah, compensation! hmm, i can hook you up with someone from the station if you can visit later."

not everything is free. although kyle is the type to be stingy on things, he likes being generous to people who take his requests.
