the beach was unusually empty.

after the festivities, everyone has packed up and left. it was mostly the locals that remained on the beach, having been part of their life for most of it. despite slateport not being his place of birth, he has spent more of his life in the city the most out of every other place.

and so it was his chosen place of leisure at the moment. there's bonus points for it being empty, given that most of hoenn's residents needed time off of it after last month.

he pops up from under the water after being aided by his gyarados. the moment he gets up, he notices a childhood friend.

"ugh. you're here."

a hand throws a splash of water to his direction despite the fact that it wouldn't reach. the gyarados, on the other hand, was tempted to do more, had it not been stopped by its trainer.

Two ghosts haunt the beach. Navy does not know why this is where he chose to take a stroll. His body rests somewhere far, far away. It rests so that it might rouse and sally forth into battle against Hoenn’s many enemies, within and without. What is left is an old, pensive man, who longs for days that will never come again.[break][break]
He’s been here before. Gabe, Kyle, and him came here to see a passing swarm of Gyarados. It was an adventure, the sort of thing that made the young boy green with envy.[break][break]
Now, he is the only one that remains. The brother born of his father’s seed and the brother of blood are gone, consigned to oblivion.[break][break]
When another phantom emerges, riding atop a Gyarados, Kyle does what only he can. Navy freezes. Was there anyone else, any other man at all, riding that Gyarados, and a sword would already be in his hand. Instead, he stands there, gawking.[break][break]
“K—” His voice catches in his throat, a hard lump, like all the pain he’s bottled up threatens to spill out at once like blood across the sand.[break][break]
“Kyle?” He asks, just before being splashed by the sea dragon.[break][break]
“Why…!” Only he, this one phantom, could turn grief to boyish anger. He doesn’t notice the rod that materializes in his hand, or the sand-attack flicked back at Gyarados and his rider.[break][break]

reflexes were one thing. intuition was another.

the sand blinds him, but he's too focused on the face that he doesn't notice the materialized weapon. the reaction was more reminiscent of a civilian than a veteran on the field, spitting sand out of his mouth while he holds on to his gyarados.

"why what?!" he shouts, wiping his face with sea water.

the system experiences a paradox between the overlap of a character present in the past and a character relevant in the present. memories that were deleted and replaced get patched with ones of old, extrapolating data from things that have changed.

michael navidson, better known as navy to his peers, was an old friend of kyle lopez. a man of ideals who has foregone little things for the bigger picture, navy climbed the ranks for hoenn's survival.

in this rewritten history, kyle was valued as his brother-- and just like gabriel navidson, was left on his own to build a better future.

"fine! i can play on my own if you would rather throw sand on my face!"

“No!” He shouts, recognizing how he is begging. The rod disappears from his hands, leaving him just a man standing in the sand, looking at a ghost. Somewhere far, far away, his heart is beating like a war drum. Were he resting in League HQ rather than Isaac Merlo’s pond, people would be rushing to try and wake him up. If this is a dream, he finds he does not want it to end.[break][break]
“No. I’m, uh. Sorry. You know how I get sometimes when I get mad.” It’s a flimsy excuse spoken in a dry voice. He steps out into the water.[break][break]
“K-Kyle. Where’ve you been, man? I…I missed you. Does, does Noah know you’re…?”

"i'm not the one who went and left. you did." finally, he clears his sight. "i haven't left slateport for the longest ti-"

it was then that he finally sees the projection clearly. light doesn't bend properly around his figure and the sea's breeze does not seem to affect the creases of his clothing.

observant as he may, he still does the final test of splashing water on navy. it was his second time, but the first time didn't count since sand got thrown on his face.

"are you dead?!" he asks with surprise. although he may play around, the statement sounded genuine. "o-or am i hallucinating?"

he turns back to his gyarados, who acknowledges navy's presence, and then back to him. questions he may have asked due to confusion are now replaced with questions he will now ask due to confusion.

the first contact always brought the most skepticism.

he already was aware of what people thought of him. the truth he adheres to is the truth he believes in, and as far as he knows, he has not died. the idea of playing along comes to mind, but not when he was wished a death sentence.

"do you want me to actually die?" he asks back, unabashed.

actually was the key word.

"heh. help? i'm surprised you're changing your stance on getting people around you involved. but for real? me? helpful?"

he wasn't like gabriel navidson. he doesn't have the fervor to put the greater good above himself. in his point of view, he was a normal individual with a realist perspective of the world and would run at the earliest sign of danger.

as much as he wants to speak fondly of the late navidson and use him as a subject to tease the older brother with, it leaves a bad taste in his mouth to mix and match his name with the topic they're treading on.

idly, he paddles forward to reach for navy. the gyarados and its sapphire scales, despite its reservations, brings him closer.

"injured is really loose term. are you sure you're really not dead?"

he swings his hands on the phantasmal navy, giving in to his curiosity despite not matching the mood of their exchange.

He feels flesh, or at least the facsimile. Navy is warm, now as always. Kyle’s hand comes away wet, like he moved his hand through a particularly dense patch of mist. Even while resting, the Warrior serves – such is the role he has taken for himself.[break][break]
“I’d really be dead if not for…” His hand rests over his heart. In this false second body, it merely matches the rhythm of the real heart, resting on a distant island. “…my best friend.”[break][break]
Passing strange, how he hears his own words echoed back at him, filtered through another’s attitude and temperament. Raising an eyebrow, he does not move away, or turn from Kyle. Instead, he puts out another test, something men once told him, a lifetime ago.[break][break]
“The League can pay pretty good, you know. Always need more muscle – promising trainer like you.” But he can’t just leave it there. He owes noah faber, and so he asks another question.[break][break]
“You…talked to Noah?”

"the gym leader?" it is how he knows him by. "he visited my office last time. he's cool."

not saying much was in character, but not for the wrong reasons. there simply wasn't enough time to explain the intricacies of their interaction when something else much more interesting surfaces from the conversation.

"oh, that reminds me. come visit me sometime. i started a detective agency like the one you had before. the office is right by my apartment."

his residence was what he rented when he lived in slateport many years ago. it's resurgence alone is retelling of how he held himself, disregarding his home at verdanturf for reasons unknown to navy.

another hint of the differences between what they know makes itself known soon after.

"i quit the force at my colleague's request. is this the reason why?"

Oh how the men they were so long ago, before Slateport was invaded by SILAS BLACKWELL, would laugh to see them now. Navy finds precious little to laugh about.[break][break]
“Probably got let go ‘cause you wouldn’t get in on all the bribes and other bullshit the precincts in lower Slateport did back in the Monroe days. Arceus, those precincts were sewers.” Dahlia would have done her best to clean them up, he’s sure. Dahlia Goode has a politician’s air, a politician’s knack for empty promises and promises half-fulfilled, but he’s served her as an Elite Four for long enough to know she cares, that the smile is genuine, that she is what Ulysses Monroe pretended to be.[break][break]
Arceus, coming back to Slateport always gets me thinking about stuff like this.[break][break]
“Anyway…what’s stopping us from going right now? The landlord still cooking that curry that could make Moltres cry from how spicy it is?”

"because i'm doing something else," kyle informs navy.

he turns at the slateport waters, staring at the glistening blue that stretches far to the horizon where navy's new home was situated.

"a kid asked me to find their feebas after they lost it here at the beach. paid me a week's worth of allowance for it. i can't really leave it behind gyarados-infested beaches, can i?"

kyle doesn't need to mention the risks. a small domestic pokemon out in the wild has little to offer for self-defense against its predators, especially for its species.

still, kyle takes the time to talk to navy over getting himself back to work. it's clear that kyle had been caught up shirking his duties while talking about his integrity.

"i'll have to return the deposit if i fail, and there's this new game coming out that i really need..."

Everything about this takes him back. For him, the days when he worked as a private pokeball for hire in lower Slateport seem like a dream he had decades ago. For most, he had a sudden change in profession after the battle in Dewford last year. It makes him feel young again – truly young, to remember all the little street level incidents that put food on his tables and (barely) kept the lights on.[break][break]
Kyle’s phantom even makes the same mistakes he once did. Discarding his last ancient weapon, the one he conjures next seems more like a tuning rod. It teleports a certain dolphin out of the water near Dewford. Toshinori, who has the honor of being Hoenn’s only champion-rank Palafin, finds himself three feet above the water of Slateport beach. He screams, only to plunge into the cool water.[break][break]
“Sorry, Toshi. I’d have gotten you from my PC the old-fashioned way but I’m not letting this guy out of my sight.” Coughing, the Palafin looks from Navy to Kyle and goes white, like he too is looking at a ghost.[break][break]
“Gyarados is good at fighting, but nobody underwater’s gonna listen to him. You need someone who can rub some hands together. Grease some palms. Ask the right questions.” It was a mistake he’d made, once. That mistake led to him skirting Monroe and Dahlia Goode’s bans on Paldean Pokemon to import the Palafin.[break][break]
“Here. We’ll swim out with you. Gyarados can look mean and scary. Toshinori will ask the locals if they’ve seen the Feebas.”

kyle never found himself natural for the job the same way navy had been. there is no charisma, but talks have been done under methodological series of talking points that naturally lead to a subject. often times, he gets information through other means.

still, it doesn't beat the tried and tested that navy's pokemon will offer.

"neat! you're a lifesaver." he smiles, seemingly proud. "get it? lifesaver? since we're in water?"

he releases his gyarados back to the waters to accompany the palafin to do their work, leaving him with navy.

his perspective leaves a lot of time between now and the perceived last meeting, which had been gabe's memorial, but time matters little. as much as there is a need to say he missed him, he doesn't. they will always leave off from the last checkpoint and relationship points do not deteriorate.

"looks like we can hang out as soon as i'm done with this," he informs him. "are you excited? maybe you'll get a chance to get in my bedroom if you're lucky."
