Heavy air fills his lungs, making him cough. There’s nowhere in all the world he hates more than this sea, yet it is here he is dutybound to fight.[break][break]
“Thanks.” Only after the intrusive thoughts of slaughter and a warrior’s paradise subside does he say the word, smiling weakly at Kyle. They’re not far from a ship that got itself wrecked down here. It’s nowhere near as big as the Questor Lucis, just a scout vessel, but it is pierced deep into the ground.[break][break]
“Always wondered what’s under there. Cyan, you mind?”[break][break]
As it turns out, the answer is yes. Zacian steps across the poison with delicate steps, navigating over to Noah. She tips her head low, rubbing it against him in a gesture of warm sympathy. She knows loss, knows it very well. Putting on such a brave face when faced with his husband’s ghost earns him her respect.[break][break]
“Guess not.” Grumbling, the warrior reaches into his pack and searches for another pokeball. Finally, he comes out holding a great ball. Tepig is pulled back, unlikely to play a greater role in this tale.[break][break]
“Little Shuwen, you’re up.” Little Shuwen, who doubtless will be given another, cooler name like Patroclus, jumps from his ball and looks to the wreck. “That’s right. Show us how your training’s comin’ along.”[break][break]
The Kubfu huffs, falling into a battle stance, trying to fight the right angle, focusing…[break][break]
His punch, though unassuming at first, sends a massive crack running through the ship from top to bottom. It’s an excellent start, all delivered in a small package.

A wolf steps out of the mist, looking down at the girl. Sheathed across her back is a massive scabbard, her sword slumbering like her bonded knight. Both wait for the next battle. She did not come here to fight. She looks down at the young one and remembers an old memory, another time far removed from this one.[break][break]
She yawns and sits by the girl. Her cyan fur is warm over hard muscles. She nuzzles against the young one, pulling her close and inviting her to sleep. Better to not be alone when one’s heart is a storm, when all the world is falling upon your head.

Steel and stone smash Nihilego’s barriers. It screams a high-pitched scream until the very last barrier breaks. When it shatters, the Nihilego shrinks and knows death. Its corpse glows with ethereal light, floating up through empty air as if carried on a wave. Poison covers the ground all around them, making the terrain treacherous indeed.[break][break]
Afforded a moment to rest, Navy slumps to the ground, looking at the rest of them. He blinks and sees red. Blinks again and the world is right. Voices whisper venom into his thoughts, as they always do when he dives into this sea.[break][break]
Your greatest allies…[break][break]
A ghost wearing your friend’s face.[break][break]
His husband, who marched your brother into hell.[break][break]
A man you damned with glory.[break][break]
Kill them now. Give them Valhalla. Spare them the suffering that’s to come, Michael. You can do that. You are the ONLY one who can do that for them…[break][break]
Then Gabe won’t be alone.[break][break]
“Man, you two took to each other like two peas in a pod.” His smile betrays none of what the poison suggests. “Eddie and Terrakion. Those’re two names that’ll go down in legend when Howard writes ‘bout the war.”[break][break]
“You got a Chansey or Audino, you two?” He asks the once-married couple. Just to pass the time, he releases a Tepig and orders it to burn away the poison. This is a precision task, something his bigger, stronger Pokemon would foul up. The little pig’s embers create a controlled burn. Zacian sheathes Ascalon, pacing about among the poison. Her eyes survey the darkness, standing vigil while these modern men complete their task.

Not for the first, nor the last time, Navy is grateful for Eduardo Hisakawa. There are precious few men on Dewford island who could rise to the challenge of fighting Nihilego. Vortigern falls in beside Tennessee, forcing the Ultra Beast back into the darkness step by step, battering it with his primordial outrage.[break][break]
“Yeah.” He says to noah faber, a word with more falsehood than he likes. Poison courses through his body. This is Rocket’s black gold, the toxin these angels leak. It spurs him to fight them, expel them from this place, join his voice to the chorus—[break][break]
His hand falls to where the wound clots. Barnacles scab across his skin, a phenomenon Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki once dubbed angel kisses. Navy’s grip turns ironclad. The rocky line is ripped off like a band-aid, sending a spray of blood across the ground beneath his feet. Strange ichor seeps out of the wound, forced out by his oath to an old hero.[break][break]
“I’ll be fine!” Clapping Noah on the shoulder, he finds strength in his friend’s smile. “Just treat it like I lost some hate points in those games you played with Ga-”[break][break]
His quip is cut short by a burst of magenta light. An angel grows. They take their final ascension. It dances above them in the pale glow of stars and in the dark that bends around its shape. Nihilego, grown large and bathing in its god’s power, thinks that it will never die.[break][break]
“Damn it.” Navy growls. “Cyan. You’re up.”[break][break]
An old habit. A bad habit. Mist spreads across this patchy stretch of poisoned land, turned and tilled by strife. Eternatus bleeds beneath them, and He will bleed more before this expedition is through.[break][break]

There is no preamble. There is no pretense. There is no howl. There is only duty, and another foe to be slain in this place. Ascalon glows as Zacian descends, swift as a valkyrie come to carry an einherjar. The behemoth blade, as Ascalon was known in history, glows with blue fury. Barriers explode with violent force, the creature screaming its alien cry.[break][break]
“Quick! We gotta take it down while she’s got it on the backfoot!”

“Don’t, uh, put it that way, man…” All his easy smiles and confidence fades into a sheepish retort. Remembering the face Eternatus wore in a distant dream, that of Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki, cleaning out its bowels evokes macabre imagery.[break][break]
She’s gone, his daughter; Lost somewhere down in this midnight sea. Some part of him, the part that will forever be a wrathful black dragon, wants to tear these Nihilego apart. One of them could lead him to Tsubaki. One of them knows where his daughter is, lost and alone down in this unforgiving place.[break][break]
Eddie, Noah, and Kyle anchor him to the present, and to a greater task. They must secure this place, guard it against Rocket. declan walsh and his cabal have proven they will put their own needs above this region’s. Meteno bared Rocket’s true colors for the whole world to see. Rocket’s underbosses would see this region painted magenta if it brought them victory.[break][break]
“We do got the dream team. They oughtta-” Deploy us together, next time there’s a big battle. There’s so much good-natured masculine bravado in the words, as if war is some game. It’s not. It hurts to look at Kyle, as much as Navy can’t help but look.[break][break]
“-get us together more often.” A simple enough finish to the sentence. His smile is back.[break][break]
Navy doesn’t notice the assassin in the dark before it’s too late. Vortigern roars, snapping his tamer to attention. Turning, a Nihilego comes alive with light where before there was only shadow. Its stinger pierces the sheriff’s shoulder just below where Calyrex’s glacial lance took him some months ago.[break][break]
“Fuck…” He falls to a knee, conjuring Ascalon and severing the stinger. The Nihilego tries to ward off the others with a caustic acid spray. Poison seeps through Navy’s body, a neurotoxin both Tsubaki and Melody Miro know all too well.[break][break]

They descend once more into the bowels of a sleeping god. Far above them glows the light of His angels. Vortigern wards them away, the black dragon’s footsteps making the ground tremble. Nothing descends while this monster roams the open wastes of the midnight sea.[break]
“Don’t like this.” Says Dewford’s sheriff, freshly roused from a long slumber. After sleeping for months, his own true body feels strange to him. His eyes tilt up, then at the path ahead. “Don’t like this one bit.”[break][break]
It is not the first time he’s protested, even if he understands the necessity of the task. howard slayte’s attack has left this place exposed. Nihilego can get out, Rocket can get in. It is prudent for Dahlia Goode’s League to secure a proper hold on this place. His own base, a safe haven carved out of a grotto near the entrance, isn’t enough to house an army.[break][break]
“For a simple private eye, you sure got a PC full of Pokemon.” His words are for kyle lopez, but he finds himself looking at noah faber somewhere along the way. All of them labor alongside this echo of one they love, a cosmic prank whose punchline has yet to be said.[break][break]
“Alright. This is as good a spot as any.” He declares, crossing his arms and nodding down to his Greninja. Hattori wastes no time. Clutches of Nihilego eggs cling to one of the chamber’s walls. If they are to terraform a god’s bowels, they have to clear out the neighbors first. A flurry of water shuriken fly, cutting the eggs free. Gravity does the rest. The monsters inside are born and die shrieking an unearthly sound.[break][break]
“And thanks again for coming, Eddie.” It’s Eduardo Hisakawa’s job to be here. He’s a soldier, Terrakion’s chosen, a proper knight out of the tale. “We’ll all need to be on our toes when the Nihilego wise up to what we’re doing.” Already, their distant lights grow brighter.

Navy is not long for this place. He has never been here, tethered by the glowing blade that has bonded with Eris. Rest calls for him. Avalon beckons. He fights its pull for just a little while longer. It pains him, being unable to approach closer, unable to offer true help without forcing an awkward conversation and a sudden departure.[break][break]
Even still, it’s not so bad, being a guardian angel.

It was always a magnificent thing, witnessing the bond between a young trainer and their Pokemon. It takes a certain measure of oneness with one’s inner child to be a truly great Pokemon trainer in the fighting master’s experience. There were exceptions, Arceus knows at least two of Hoenn’s strongest trainers were too grown up for their own good, but they were exceptions.[break][break]
“You heard her, Hero! You’re the best!” He shouts, fist pumping into the air. It almost throws him off balance given the ice, but he manages to stay standing. “Your buddy’s evolving. It can happen for all sorts of reasons. Some Pokemon get forced to evolve. Some need stones. Some love their trainers so much that they just don’t wanna lose or embarrass themselves in front of ‘em.”[break][break]
