All he can give to that is a dry, mirthless laugh. Navy stands up. There will be more time to ask questions, more time to press him, more time to convince Bryan that it's not too late. Though his fate is sealed either way, there's a world of difference between walking towards imprisonment with your head held high and being dragged like a dog.[break][break]
"Funny. When Zacian n' me made our deal, I told her I'd stop half-assing these fights. Told her I'd put my foot down and fight." An echo of that laugh, just as humorless. It is simply a long exhalation of air.[break][break]
"Truth is...I don't want to kill your friends, any more than you want to see them die." He begins to fade. Avalon once more calls to him. "Think about that, Bryan. You're trapped in a cycle. Only one who can break it is you."[break][break]

There’s some comfort in knowing that justice is coming for Declan Walsh, whether at Ascalon’s edge or on the end of Shred’s axe. It’s a frightening thing, this weapon he conjures, and his heart would sink were it not for the many battles that led him to this moment.[break][break]
When Shred’s Slither Wing bursts forth, taking the initiative and setting the tempo of this battle, Navy’s hand balls into a fist. It’s a little tick of his when recognition dawns for him. This creature is strong, well-trained, the same Pokemon that felled Junior almost ~~twenty-one~~ two years ago.[break][break]
Roland’s protest is a soft grunt, like the whining of circuits. The sound is replaced by the song of rising steel. First blood and second impression goes to Slither Wing, but Ascalon’s edge rises to meet the primordial beast. His spirit break is more a test, meant to either bloody the creature or force it back. The one-armed knight’s movements are perfect, wasting no effort, going no farther than they need to go.[break][break]
“And what would you prop up, Shred? When it’s all burned down? When Hoenn’s ash and you’re in charge? What’s life gonna be like in your kingdom?” Some part of him knows. It’s written in the beautiful ugly edge of his axe, condensed orichalcum forced to a killing edge for singular purpose. It’s a world meant for him, a world of the strong.[break][break]
There’s nothing in all the world he’d ~~love~~ hate to see more than that.

Once, long ago in distant Dewford, he would have been scared, terrified. These three Rockets are monsters, every one. Their strength is the stuff of legend. Even Hoenn’s rank and file could stand equal to Galar’s elites under the training of Zev Harcourt and jayden.[break][break]
Those days are long ago. Kouji Matsubara beat every last bit of fear out of him. What emerged from Granite Cave was a warrior. Galar turned the ore Kouji extracted from the earth into a blade of adamantium.[break][break]
Corviknight falls upon him. In his mind’s eye, he sees red swords used by heroes in ancient days. They appear in reality, these many swords, bitter blades fired up with magnetic force at the Corviknight. Trails of fire, like the shooting stars from his dream, trail behind them. He dives, and prays.[break][break]
“Zacian! Fight! Fight! Fiiiiiiiight!” He barks with a warrior’s maddening cadence, eyes seeming more wolf than man as he screams the words. The last thing he sees before dazzling psychic energy fills the air is the Espeon antagonizing Zacian, who grunts in exertion. Stealth rocks bleed the dog. She is not Zamazenta, meant to serve as dauntless shield. Her domain is the march forward, a relentless advance, an intrepid sword.[break][break]
“I told you! I’ll cover you! Keep it up!” Navy takes to the air, another sword in his hand. This one seems more a slab of raw iron, too thick and unwieldy to be called a proper sword. Were it not for this terrible situation, these awful odds, he wouldn’t have the strength to wield the blade. He batters it against the ground near Espeon like a battering ram, sending an earthquake through the battlefield.[break][break]
In the far distance, he feels something inside him break once again. The rocks dig into his skin. They batter him. His strength begins to fall despite all the power doled upon him by his sword sister. Just a little bit longer. Let the star streak across the sky just a bit…longer…[break][break]
Through the fog, he sees her sword light up again. He sees her rise up, strong as ever, delivering another behemoth felling blade stroke against the Toxtricity, who batters at her body, batters at his body, falling upon them with the full might of his fated foe, slumbering beyond the stars.

“I’ll be fine.” He reassures Eddie with a weak smile. “You ever heard the old story ‘bout the king from Galar wieldin’ a sword of light? The one who was wounded and had to rest in a place called Avalon?” Navy looks to Zacian, who seems very interested in what he has to say. “Well, they got one thing wrong. It was a queen, ain’t that right, Zacian?”[break][break]
“Hmm.” The noise almost sounds human, but she offers no more reply than that. She seldom speaks, for the tongues of wolves are ill-made for the speech of man.[break][break]
“Guess this is me now. Well, not forever.” A nod down at his injuries, which knead back together millimeter by millimeter. “But for a while now. No dying. Not for me. Not while this war’s being fought.”[break][break]
He stands, walking up to the taller man. Navy reaches up, putting a hand on his shoulder. It feels weird, talking like this with someone who’s older than him, though his soul is far older after a Galarian dream. Eddie’s grown. Some part of him feels guilty for turning this good man into a warrior. In the days when their live are told as history, they’ll say Eddie was a hero. They won’t remember his smile, or how he puts Navy’s heart at ease with his simple unconditional goodness, but they will remember his greatness.[break][break]
“Don’t die, Eddie. Please. One of my best friends is dead. Another destroyed my town. Baki’s going into that sea more and more. Just feels…” His words fail him. “…like everyone’s changing, and not for the better. All cause of this war. All cause of what we stand to lose.”

It always comes down to this. Any in life where Navy becomes Navy instead of dying as Michael Navidson at the hands of a drunken father or an errant gang, it always boils down to this. It’s his life boiled down to one action: the draw. It’d win him points for style with the crowd in a Galarian arena. There are no imagined cheers here, only cold reality cast in chrome flesh. Roland, who had once been a chronically shy Gallade passing his shyness off as stoicism, stands between the humans.[break][break]
“Here.” Ascalon appears in Navy’s hand, throwing it to the paradox men call Iron Valiant. “Come on, Shred. Let’s fight.”

There are some who would say Navy is telling a half-truth based on an assumption. Bryan Delarosa has never come up when he’s spoken with Isaac Merlo. Everything about this takes him back. For him, the days when he worked as a private pokeball for hire in lower Slateport seem like a dream he had decades ago. For most, he had a sudden change in profession after the battle in Dewford last year. It makes him feel young again – truly young, to remember all the little street level incidents that put food on his tables and (barely) kept the lights on.[break][break]
Kyle’s phantom even makes the same mistakes he once did. Discarding his last ancient weapon, the one he conjures next seems more like a tuning rod. It teleports a certain dolphin out of the water near Dewford. Toshinori, who has the honor of being Hoenn’s only champion-rank Palafin, finds himself three feet above the water of Slateport beach. He screams, only to plunge into the cool water.[break][break]
“Sorry, Toshi. I’d have gotten you from my PC the old-fashioned way but I’m not letting this guy out of my sight.” Coughing, the Palafin looks from Navy to Kyle and goes white, like he too is looking at a ghost.[break][break]
“Gyarados is good at fighting, but nobody underwater’s gonna listen to him. You need someone who can rub some hands together. Grease some palms. Ask the right questions.” It was a mistake he’d made, once. That mistake led to him skirting Monroe and Dahlia Goode’s bans on Paldean Pokemon to import the Palafin.[break][break]
“Here. We’ll swim out with you. Gyarados can look mean and scary. Toshinori will ask the locals if they’ve seen the Feebas.”

An old philosopher in a distant land once wrote about time and being. A student said that time is a flat circle. It proves a poor metaphor.[break][break]
Time is an Ouroboros. Time is a serpent which consumes itself. Time is a monster that places you precisely where you once were, no matter what lies are told about change and rebirth.[break][break]
Her body is draped in a garish uniform. Deep black, emblazoned with a crimson R. Camellia plays her part. Another soul dead at her feet. Another life lost in this pointless war. A dead serpent coils around the young beauty.[break][break]
"You disappoint me, Tsubaki." Says the man who planted the seed in the soil. "You were meant for more than this." Cool words. They do not comfort. They do not caress. They assess. I’m not the only bastard here. Damn you, Goode. She’ll be an avatar in time. Hoenn’s guardians know that the hour grows late. Before them stretches a dark night and it falls upon each of them to defend this land. She’ll never admit it, but she’s been trying to find someone for Bulu and the others for years.[break][break]
And why wouldn’t she, with the region at war? Dahlia Goode is no Ulysses Monroe. He must believe she simply trusts Genny with the burden, as he does.[break][break]
“Be careful with that thing. From how the reports read, it’s like if you took Kyle and made him into a Pokemon.” Just the thought of kyle lopez lounging about with all his easy strength, baited into action and grumbling all the while, makes a vein bulge on his forehead.[break][break]

He urges Valkyrie forward, yet she won’t move. Poison courses through the horse’s veins. She takes to a knee. Navy screams, and he feels every bone in his torso shatter. Far, far away, his body screams in pain. The dreamer does not waken. The battle is not yet done.[break][break]
These three are mighty. He looks up and sees naught but sand. Sand nips at his eyes. He can’t even see anymore.[break][break]
His mind turns back to a scene from long, long ago…[break][break]

A shooting star tore the night sky above Slateport. People gathered to watch it, happy for a break from the monotony of city life. What a beautiful sight, that star. It burned bright. Burned well. It was gone.[break][break]
All that was left in its wake was stardust. Gabriel Navidson, sitting in his older brother’s lap, was sad to see it go. He too burned out too soon. All his older brother could say when it happened was that it was his choice, to live like that star. kyle lopez burned out too, another streak in the sky.[break][break]
In the present, a supermassive influx of dynergy blasts away the sandstorm. Trees are blasted away, and Navy sees the sky. What a beautiful blue sky, a fine day to—[break][break]
Another shooting star. Another blue streak. It descends upon them. It falls fast. With every inch it travels, the Warrior feels himself grow stronger.[break][break]
He stands, and sees that Roland was blasted back by the electric waves Toxtricity cast across the earth. Ascalon falls into the knight’s hand.[break][break]
All great warriors die. He thinks. Most of them die young. Just like that star. Not today.[break][break]
It lands at his side, that star. It takes the form of a furious blue knight. Zacian, hero of many battles, takes to the field.[break][break]
“I’ll make a path for you.” He says to a warrior who died of old age. He remembers her promise, that he would do the same. If he must burn out like that star, so be it, but he’ll fight to live.[break][break]
A staff appears in his left hand. Long ago, a hero tamed the very skies with this staff. Power lingers in the old oak. Raising it high, Navy blasts man and mon alike with a hurricane, blasting away the sandstorm.[break][break]

Zacian needs no command. Her instincts carry her forward, on towards her target, on towards this newest giant for her to slay. Zacian’s half of Ascalon glows with the light of Avalon and distant worlds. It grows into a behemoth blade. Dyna barriers might well be butter before the hero of many battles.
