Or were you too young to care?” Arceus knows he had other priorities back then. Ahead of them, the doppelgänger is inspecting every tiny detail of the gym.

“Yo! Good to see you guys. Guess I’ll be inspecting your gym today. Let’s see what you’ve got.” Hand in his pocket, the old Navy grins and walks past them. His gray eyes focus on nothing and everything all at once. His comments make little sense given the specifics of the gym. [break][break]
“Miss being that guy.” Navy remarks with a sad smile. “Guess that’s what happens, living here. Get changed.”

It's all a distraction from what Cillian said. With the gift of hindsight offered by the unown of yuletide past, he knows just how right the underboss is. In another life, where he championed a world of strength, he’d flourish in Rocket. No bureaucracy. No rules save the rules of nature. Battle under a red sun. A beast with an archangel’s name.[break][break]
But that’s not the world he wants. They’ll never truly be friends in this world, even if they know one another more intimately than friends ever could. The bond between murderer and victim runs deep.[break][break]
“Come on. Let’s punch Kyogre in the nose. Got a plan.”[break][break]
Hattori’s out, clinging to Navy’s back. The one-eyed frog gives the man who stole his eye a fearless salute. Since they last met, his skin has been burned black by Groudon’s flames.[break][break]
Without much warning, he dives. Hattori shoots an ice beam at the water around Kyogre, freezing it solid. It serves to make the lawless sea much harder for its master to navigate.[break][break]
They’ve all the ingredients for a perfect storm.

Even if the human has nothing to say on the matter, Hattori loves this place. He’s out of Navy’s pokeball, jumping up through the trees like a carefree child. All of the many tools he has for traversing the landscape are brought to bear. He swings from vines, clings to trees, rides a wave of water upward, so much more. It is the first time Eris will have been granted a good look at Navy’s frog since the battle in the Ultra Deep Sea.[break][break]
The one-eyed frog is burned. Burned black. Burned to a crisp. Some might call that form shiny, but both shinobi and Lord wish that he had acquired that shiny coat at a smaller price. Hattori waves to Eris like nothing is wrong. The little frog enjoys her forest.[break][break]
“It’s pretty, I’ll give it that. Never knew you were in the minor league.” He’d never put two and two together about a certain name on the minor league docket. There was no point. By then, he had all his badges.[break][break]
“Cool gym. Never took you for a grass trainer.” Which, of course, she isn’t, but he’s into the classics – trainers who stick strictly to one central type. It’s why he styles his gym as the dragon gym. Hattori’s tera type is even dragon.[break][break]
“You get a lot of traction when you had the place?”

“Heard you’re a minor league gym leader yourself. Glad Tom’s helping you train. The guy was a damn good Elite 4. Wish his divorce hadn’t been messy. Could use his help up at HQ right about now.” Sadly, that’s not how the cards have shaken out. Instead, they switched positions from where they first met. Navy’s inside. Thomas is outside. At least he’s where he needs to be to protect people like Desiree and the rest.[break][break]

“Figured there’d be something more here.” Navy paces around the void. At the center is a tera crystal, not unlike a hundred others he’s seen throughout the region. It spreads. Whether it spreads like a cancer or white blood cells, he doesn’t know. All he knows is that it’s spreading.[break][break]

“Valhalla again?” The traveler asks. It’s dead now. Cold. Snow begins to take these halls where warriors once feasted. Wukong, his guide and companion, jumps up and down impatiently. The monkey king has something to show the cicada.[break][break]
Navy follows. He follows through the halls of the einherjar. He follows past murals of great warriors. Long rotten skeletons that were once bosom brothers smile at him where they lay. This dream is long dead, and Navy has killed it. In a battle of ideals, he killed this place with one kind act.[break][break]
“What’re you trying to show me?” Navy asks.[break][break]
“Ook.” Wukong retorts, cocking his head to the side. There’s nothing to be done except follow. Follow down old stairs. Down past even the battlefields. Down to the very heart of Valhalla.[break][break]
At the bottom sits trampled flowers. Navy sits beside them. Wukong looks at his trainer expectantly.[break][break]
“What am I looking at?”[break][break]
“Ook.” Wukong says with the wisdom of a great sage. Once more, the monkey king gestures to the trampled garden.[break][break]
“This is what we’re supposed to destroy, huh? Just a bunch of flowers?” Leaning forward, he plucks one from the garden. He’s no Elisabeth Fiorelli, to find a language in a rosebud. Warriors are meant for simpler words.[break][break]
He sees a glint of a green eye in the petal. It falls to the floor as he lurches in shock. Fumbling forward, he looks at another of the followers. In it he sees Eris Halla. In another, Melody Miro. Others show people that the DRK Triad, Rocket, Eternatus, and the other evils of the world will never notice. He sees the girl who pours coffee in Dewford’s café, dreaming of being a movie star. John Peters, the farmer, tends his crops. Vanilla Kingsley searches for her father.[break][break]
The people trampled by the strong, those who must grow strong or be subjugated by strength. Beautiful people, that he would die for. Those with merit beyond their fists.[break][break]
And this place demands he destroy them, for they are the heart of his world.[break][break]
“I’m good.”[break][break]
It doesn’t take him long to make a decision. The monkey king sways his tail. Looking up at his trainer, his eyes convey a wordless question. A voice makes that question evident.[break][break]
“Are you sure?” A pink creature asks him. There is no judgement in its voice. “This may be cheating, but…you’ll miss out on a reunion.”[break][break]
Perched high above sits Ironsides. Beside him is a dragon who climbed a waterfall. They’re too far away to hear his words, too high to see him clearly.[break][break]
“I’ll meet ‘em again. Dunno where, dunno when, but I will.” Standing up, he dons his hat, turns to hit the trail.[break][break]
“If I gotta burn these flowers to see ‘em again, I wouldn’t be able to look them in the eyes.”[break][break]
Just as he’s about to leave, he shouts at the top of his lungs.[break][break]
“IRONSIDES,” his voice echoes up the high walls, “YOU’RE GONNA BE IN THE HALL OF FAME. GOT MY WORD ON IT.”[break][break]
And in quieter voice…[break][break]
“Kohryu, when you see Gabe again, tell him I’ll be a little bit. Still got work to do.”[break][break]
Once again, he wakes up.

Goode, true to her name, is a good soul. It’s hard to muster the same ire for her that he can for FERNANDO SILPH, her longstanding councilman. There’s a reason she is the face of the government and he its quiet specter.[break][break]
“Pleasure to be here, Commissioner.” He offers her a pleasantry accentuated by a soft, genuine smile. “Sorry ‘bout all the complaints you probably get. ‘Bout my gym, I mean.” He’s harsh, rough, reckless with the trainers who challenge him. “Better me than Rocket.” Better a taste of harsh truth than the bite of Cillian Quinn’s knife.

He stands, at last, on the mountaintop. Across from him stands the burning one-eyed star. The All-Father looks on in contempt.[break][break]
“Congratulations are in order, Michael.” Gabriel says, looking down at the path up the mountain. It is a path carved in blood. Shuwen’s hands drip with the stuff raw, red stuff of fallen warriors.[break][break]
“Don’t want congratulations.” He paces back and forth, looking past the star. He looks for a way out. More than anything, he wants to wake from this dream. Melody will be there. They’ll have a nice meal. He’ll forget all about this. It will be his own private misery, like all of the others that will follow. Another secret, just for him. Just like the woman he saved, years ago. Just like the lives he took.[break][break]
“Let me out.”[break][break]
“If you wanted to leave that easily, you would just wake up.” Some would call that an unfair observation. Navy sees the wisdom in the words. He sighs, stumbles. Shuwen catches him, steadies the sheriff.[break][break]
“It will be hard, what comes. It would be easier if you had the great emerald dragon’s blessing, if only for a short while.”[break][break]
“Not like it counts in a dream anyway.” The elder brother observes. “You can tell yourself anything when your eyes are closed. Make up any kind of story you want. Reality’s what counts. Green snake didn’t help us out. Nobody did. Nobody except me. Only words I can find to believe in are mine.”[break][break]
“Would that this was not a dream.” The younger brother smiles. “Pick your Pokemon then, Michael.”[break][break]
“You even gotta ask?” Ironsides flies from the sky, landing before his trainer. Screeching, he readies for battle. Gabriel, the All-Father, draws a burning pokeball. Tossing it out, Kohryu roars, coiling through the air like a great serpent.[break][break]
“Looks like a mirror of the first match we ever had.” Navy’s smile is pensive, remembering the battle on the beach. “Nobody likes a crybaby, Gabe.”[break][break]
“Then come claim victory or get cast down in defeat. Whatever you want. It’s all for y-”[break][break]
He’s cut off as he sees his brother do something mad. Crossing the mountaintop summit, walking past Kohryu, he stands before the burning star that was Gabriel Navidson. His arms open wide. He embraces the younger brother. Even as it burns him, scorches him, scalds his flesh, he hugs his brother.[break][break]
“I miss you, you little idiot. You don’t gotta be so extra. Even if you’re just a dream…you’re plenty real to me. Valhalla. Fighting. Losing. Winning. Just wish I had you. You can say this is what I want, this is what would make me happy. Maybe you’re right…” His own skin is on fire when he lets go. Turning, he looks at the sun breaking at last through crimson clouds.[break][break]
“…what makes me happy is other people being happy.”[break][break]
Ironsides, Kohryu, and Shuwen look between the brothers. None of the Pokemon move to interfere. The one-eyed star cries.[break][break]
“You’re the dumb one, Navy.” He says in a younger voice.[break][break]
“Yeah.” Navy agrees. “A man’s gotta be a little stupid.”[break][break]
And then, he wakes up.
