January in Hoenn isn’t supposed to be cold. In the time before the war, it was chilly, especially so close to the sea, but the area’s tropic climate kept people in shorts. Since the advent of the war, Navy has seen snow on beaches. It feels like a proper winter wonderland. Kyurem’s recent rampage and Hoopa’s many prophecies have given the region a firm reminder of winter’s wrath.[break][break]

At least alcohol keeps the bones warm. As a rule, law enforcement officers do not usually meet up during work hours at honky tonks for drinks, much less when it’s the first meeting between a sheriff and his deputy. Montgomery has a past which smells like danger. Navy doesn’t know what secrets are hiding in the man’s closet, but they’re there.[break][break]
He doesn’t mind. As a man with a few secrets and murders he’d prefer the government never find out about, he’s learned not to pry too deeply into a man’s past. Maybe that’s why Montgomery stood out to him. With his tenure as Dewford’s gym leader drawing to a close, it’ll help him sleep easy, knowing Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki will have someone helping her who knows the score.[break][break]
Inevitably, the new deputy arrives. He will find Navy drinking mead, a proper warrior’s drink. It is sweet, but it still burns like a galloping Rapidash. With a wave, Navy invites the older man over.[break][break]
“Yo. Glad you could make it, man. Been a while since Dewford’s got a new deputy.” A small pause, punctuated by another drink. “You picked a hell of a region to move to. Take it you’re not a fan of the quiet life?”

“Thanks for saying you’ll help…really. I hate that I even have to ask, but it feels like things are about to ramp up. Besides Rocket, there’s that business with the poisoned chain and Pokemon dynamaxing out of nowhere.”

When he sees the tears threaten to flow, he hugs her. Maybe it’s inappropriate, hugging a stranger like that – but she isn’t a stranger. She was his friend, is his friend. Thea is proof, along with noah faber, kyle lopez, and all the rest who knew him, that Gabriel Navidson once lived. He does not find it odd, comforting someone else for what many would see as his loss. Loss is hard, a thousand needles piercing the heart.[break][break]
And so, he hugs her. It is not a long hug, but it is accompanied by a pat of the shoulder. Shuwen and Zeus’s battle is the soundtrack accompanying this decidedly human moment. Their blows are a reminder that the war, much like life, will go on.[break][break]
“It gets easier.” He assures her as he pulls away. “I promise.” Soft words, somber, spoken with a grief caught somewhere between a father’s and brother’s. So much of who he was went into raising Gabe.[break][break]
“He sure was enthusiastic, whenever he was gonna come spar with you.” Really, he has no excuse for not remembering her name, beyond the fact that Gabe spoke of all his friends with such enthusiasm while he was caught within the thrum of his own life.[break][break]
“Did he ever tell you he started training with Noah, the fighting gym leader, too? Kid was determined to get better…”[break][break]
A small pause, followed by words Thea is owed.[break][break]

Navy winces for Vortigern. He feels the pain pierce his arm when Jagen strikes. Vortigern does not react. He does not blink. Pain that would kill other creatures is like a blink of the eye for him.[break][break]
Navy feels what’s coming next. Their time is limited. Something terrible is coming. No rage of the body will defeat this force of spirit. Vortigern’s might is useless against the forces of entropy.[break][break]
Or so humans would say. Dragons care very little for human concerns, or human thought, or human limitations. Jagen freezes his arm. It demands a toll. Rough skin makes those who would touch a king bleed.[break][break]

Vortigern’s outrage is not something meant for beautiful battles before a stadium full of fans. It is a brutal assessment of what war truly is. He grabs Jagen. He slams Jagen. He tears himself apart in red rage for a single moment longer shredding the dragon hunter. Fangs, claws, feet, appendage, every inch of himself is thrown into a savage offense that promises the inevitable tearing of his own body.[break][break]
Even Roland has to dodge to avoid being caught in the way. Rushing behind Kommo-O’s rock tomb, he lets Vortigern and Jagen take the damage that will come from their battle breaking the tomb.[break][break]
It leaves him perfectly positioned to raise his hand, take advantage of the chaos…[break][break]
“Now! Go! Go!” He waves, his right hand a mirror of Vortigern’s as it sweeps forward.[break][break]
Roland launches a moonblast at the Kommo-O, point blank, as poison spurts from his exhaust vents.

Dragons and their kin stand at the mountaintop. Fitting, then, that only other creatures resting on the summit can fight them. Sol is no true dragon. He looks the part, but his heart lacks a dragon’s fire. Fitting, then, that Gabe kept Sol and Kohryu for company. They have the look of a dragon, but not their heart.[break][break]
Yet even still, Sol is mighty. While Tsubaki crowns Sumire, infinity energy bathes Sol. When he bursts forth like a hatchling into a violent new world, he burns like his very own sun. It shines bright all around them. The sunlight seeps into Smaug’s flesh.[break][break]
Both dragons fly down to meet their challengers. Sol meets Sumire in a dazzling, red-hot flare blitz. Dragon meets dragon in a clash of force that sends him tumbling to the ground with her, right in time for all three to be caught in Smaug’s earthquake.[break][break]
“Hold onto something!” He grips the guard rail for dear life. All around him, the cavern starts to rumble and shake. Smaug’s might demands tectonic plates move because he wills them to move. The earth shatters and splits while dragons roar.

What more needs to be said on the subject? Navy looks down, fiddling with a hidden PC just out of sight. It lets him switch out his Pokemon, even adding more to the mix, without leaving the gym. It’s one of the secrets to his success down here in this hellish battlefield. robin coello was smart, for having her Snorlax destroy it – even if that had been more accident than deliberate stratagem.[break][break]
“Guess I’ll have to go all out, then. You know what I like about dragons, Baki? Why I picked ‘em over every other type?” Two pokeballs come out. One in each hand. He holds them up so that she can see the match will start as a two on two. He has no real intention of cheating this time.[break][break]
“It’s ‘cause they’re savage. They don’t pretend to be something they’re not. They’re strong. You either stand up to them, get out of their way, or die. That’s a world people need a taste of, so they can understand we live somewhere better.”[break][break]
He stands as guardian between this world and that world. There are other dragon tamers in this region, ones with more fame attached to that title. He thinks, among them, he understands the low savagery of these creatures better than any of them.[break][break]
“Go, Sol! Smaug!” He throws out Gabe’s old Charizard and his own Roaring Moon. Both shout their pleasure at simple existence, climbing high and looking down at Tsubaki while waiting for her own Pokemon to be released.

Hattori chooses now to return with the mega stone. How he, a Pokemon, managed to adequately explain the need to someone, Navy doesn’t know. He assumes that everyone at HQ recognizes Hattori at this point. It would be hard for them to not remember a burned, black Greninja with one eye. Hattori presents the stone up to Navy, who holds it up to the light.[break][break]

“I’m up, I’m up.” Rubbing the sleep from his eyes, he looks across at her. Young, in the prime of her life, full of vigor, willing to take on the world. It’s nice, seeing her so eager to fight. She’s good at fighting. It’s a rare talent, but not as rare as it used to be in the halcyon days before the war kicked itself into high gear.[break][break]
“So. Finally ready to have a battle, huh? Crazy. We’ve known each other, what, twenty one years now, and we’ve only had two battles.” A small pause as he takes a drink from a flask, anything to water a parched throat.[break][break]

“…yeah.” His voice is sad, distant. He remembers an old wound. It isn’t forgotten. The scar tissue is twisted with every step he takes. Time, especially Galarian time, has numbed the wound into something manageable. It will never be gone, not even Eternatus and His poisoned world could manage that, but he’s finally started to move on.[break][break]
And then, he meets another person who knew his brother. This city’s a big place. It has no soul. Yet, somehow, like a mythological deity of good fortune leading the way to the end of a rainbow, Gabe could find soul anywhere. This dojo overflows with the stuff. The air is thick with fighting spirit, a structured world where combat is something more than blood and strife.[break][break]
“My kid brother. Dang. You know…I tried hard to look for this place after he died. Couldn’t find the right dojo. Sorry, kid—Thea. Sorry I couldn’t tell you what happened to him sooner.” The conversation shifts to another of the many apologies owed to people. Inaction on his part, a propensity for sitting on the sidelines until it was too late, ended with his brother dead.[break][break]
“…your dad’s just looking out for you. It’s dangerous out there. Gabe thought he could take on the world. Then…the world took him down.” Grief, sadness, and anger at a world that would allow his brother die rumble through the words. Shuwen and Zeus’s spar seems secondary to all this, somehow.

In his world, it doesn’t matter where Diancie came from. Gods, too, are born. Even the Creator’s children were hatched from an egg if the stories are to be believed. Her past doesn’t seem to matter. What matters is that she’s here, she’s willing to help…[break][break]

Navy wonders how many others born in Kanto were forced into that same terrible position – kill or be killed. Children her age should not have to form nuanced opinions on anything.[break][break]
“Anyway…she’s well cared for. Her, Jirachi, the Tapus, and all the other legendaries the League has. Tapu Koko’s always up for a fight.” Glancing at Diancie, he smirks. “Is he a bad neighbor?”[break][break]
Her sigh tells the whole story, even without human speech. Even gods can be bad roommates.[break][break]

Somewhere far away, a prehistoric creature howls. It is a land displaced from the proper flow of causality. Time moves slower than it should. They exist in a land marching to the beat of its own drum. Here, old world orders reign even as robots battle for supremacy.[break][break]
It’s a bad assignment for a man already chronically overworked. Although expeditions into the crater have died down since March, both League and Rocket still endeavor to mine the area for intel and resources. There is always a need to know more, to have more. Much and more can be gleaned in the light of tera crystals.[break][break]
Navy’s presence serves to keep monsters away from League checkpoints. He has made himself a part of the ecosystem. Creatures understand it is more trouble to deal with him than it is worth. There is easier prey in other parts of the crater. He has fought the worst this place has to offer and lived to tell the tale alongside his retinue of Pokemon.[break][break]
So, when he stumbles across one lone girl taking flower samples, he blinks. Navy cuts a dashing figure atop his Rapidash, its mane of silver flame blowing in an imperceptible wind. Pulling up on the reins, his horse stops.[break][break]
“Ma’am, it’s dangerous out here---” His warning is stopped by recognition. “Ms. Mckenna? What in the world are you doing here? How’d the League rope you into volunteering for this gig?”

Her notion of studying Eternatus casts his eyes towards the sea. He wonders how she would react, were she to learn about the nature of the Ultra Deep Sea. Eternatus rests just a few short miles away. The rift carries them across lightyears, right into the belly of the beast.[break][break]
“…we know about Eternatus. The League’s best and brightest are working hard on that.” A glint in his eyes grows as he sees an opportunity. “We can’t talk about it with civilians. Classified. Can’t ask you to join up in good conscious, either, but it’d probably go a long way if what you’re wanting to do is research Eternatus.”

Two eyes gaze out from the darkness, distant galaxies beckoning pilgrims forward with false promises. They do not offer salvation – nothing down in these dark waters can grant them that. Behind and before him, judgement is passed through lips.[break][break]
“Good grief.” An echo of earlier words, spoken with no fear. He will not dignify Eternatus with fear, even as His angels claim Tsubaki. Shuwen is still there. Hattori, too. Light persists against an endless darkness. So long as the light survives, when so many things conspire to snuff it out for good, the light wins.[break][break]
Shuwen’s burned face does not react to the overwhelming beam. He detects a path forward, a path that ensures his survival and that of the man whose warrior’s spirit could call to him from the dark places below the earth. A hand grabs Navy. Whether through preternatural sight or fighting instinct, he acts with no delay between thought and action.[break][break]
Shuwen seems to fly through the ethereal ocean, swimming with Navy caught on his back. Up, and up, and up he swims, winding up with a pitcher’s precision. He tosses Navy back down, aimed like a baseball, towards her. Hattori rides his back.[break][break]
Hattori will take it from there. Bathed in light, Shuwen transcends his normal form. He becomes the creature spoken of in ancient legend when man speaks of Urshifu.[break][break]
His form is blue, save where he has been burned. There, his skin is red. Precious few battles demand he take them this far, to use the full extent of his power. Flying down to Howard’s side like a meteor, he bellows out his cry.[break][break]
“ORA!”[break][break]
He has not been granted the gift of human speak. Shuwen can only guide through actions. Until Howard can make up his own mind, Shuwen does the craft for which he was made: he punches.[break][break]
“I’ll tell you one fact I know, Baki!” Shuwen’s trainer shouts as he shoots towards her, counting on Hattori to break the fall. “You’re in danger, and I’m way, way too stubborn to stop until you’re safe.”

Never for an instant does he think Matias is the only one that could be pushed down that path. Avatarship is a poisoned chalice. It offers power, but nothing in life comes free.[break][break]
“…but there’s so many people in this region who don’t give a good Arceus damn about any of that. Pardon my Kalosian.” He flicks his cigar into the void, for this subject is its own well of strength. “I don’t like bullies, Miss. Dark Triad…Eternatus…hell, even the people up top on both sides. That’s all they really are. They see the big picture. They see the world they wanna see. They forget ‘bout all the people just living their lives. Those folk don’t know the first thing about any of this crap. I’ll protect those people. I’ll protect ‘em from Rocket, from their own, and from monsters I don’t even understand.”[break][break]
