She's been here before. A year ago it'd just been a pile of ashes, remnants of a failed Rocket raid. Now it was truly somethin'. [break][break]

If she had to give any credit to the current Leader's questionable taste, this would be all the evidence she needed to prove he wasn't a total lost cause. Well, that and the movie marathons that had become increasingly less common the last few months the busier the both of them had become. [break][break]

"OI!! NAVY!! [break][break]

"IT'S ME!! GET YER ASS OUT HERE ALREADY!!"[break][break]

Her voice echoes across the battlefield. Loud, abrasive, well enough to fill even this arena. She holds nothing back, emptying her lungs with that curt announcement in a voice that belies her size. [break][break]

Then, she simply waits. [break][break]

“Quiet down, kid.” His voice calls out over the speakers spread across the vast, rocky battlefield. A lone hat appears, cresting above the edge of an observation platform’s railing. Navy was catching a nap down here, where no one would look for him. How Tsubaki managed to get down here, he’ll leave to his own imagination.[break][break]
“I’m up, I’m up.” Rubbing the sleep from his eyes, he looks across at her. Young, in the prime of her life, full of vigor, willing to take on the world. It’s nice, seeing her so eager to fight. She’s good at fighting. It’s a rare talent, but not as rare as it used to be in the halcyon days before the war kicked itself into high gear.[break][break]
“So. Finally ready to have a battle, huh? Crazy. We’ve known each other, what, twenty one years now, and we’ve only had two battles.” A small pause as he takes a drink from a flask, anything to water a parched throat.[break][break]
“Why now?”

What more needs to be said on the subject? Navy looks down, fiddling with a hidden PC just out of sight. It lets him switch out his Pokemon, even adding more to the mix, without leaving the gym. It’s one of the secrets to his success down here in this hellish battlefield. robin coello was smart, for having her Snorlax destroy it – even if that had been more accident than deliberate stratagem.[break][break]
“Guess I’ll have to go all out, then. You know what I like about dragons, Baki? Why I picked ‘em over every other type?” Two pokeballs come out. One in each hand. He holds them up so that she can see the match will start as a two on two. He has no real intention of cheating this time.[break][break]
“It’s ‘cause they’re savage. They don’t pretend to be something they’re not. They’re strong. You either stand up to them, get out of their way, or die. That’s a world people need a taste of, so they can understand we live somewhere better.”[break][break]
He stands as guardian between this world and that world. There are other dragon tamers in this region, ones with more fame attached to that title. He thinks, among them, he understands the low savagery of these creatures better than any of them.[break][break]
“Go, Sol! Smaug!” He throws out Gabe’s old Charizard and his own Roaring Moon. Both shout their pleasure at simple existence, climbing high and looking down at Tsubaki while waiting for her own Pokemon to be released.

If he hadn't already said it, she'd insist on it. Couldn't prove your strength without goin' all out, after all. [break][break]

It had been a while since she really cut loose. Usually, she'd only been able to against Rockets, and those weren't exactly the kinds of situations she looked forward to. This, though... she could feel the excitement like electricity, coursing through her body.[break][break]

"... Know it well. That's the world I grew up in, back in Saffron. Rocket has its way, they'll bring it to Hoenn, too. Flawed as the League is, they're against that. That's why I'm here."[break][break]

If only the girl that arrived on this island a year ago could see her say these things. She'd probably have deflected, made some comment about 'I just thought you were a fan of fantasy novels', too. But she's grown quite a bit since then.[break][break]

She tosses out two pokemon in a flash of light. Sumire towers over the field, sleek black scales shimmering in the stadium lights. Ajisai pokes his primary head from the oversized apple on the field, sizing up the drakes soaring in the skies. [break][break]

"If Rocket taught me anything, it's fight fire with fire. That's why people like me an' Isaac Merlo are the best shot at takin' Rocket down, an' why I'm gonna use dragons to beat you into submission.[break][break]

"Sumi!"[break][break]

Tsubaki holds up her wrist, tera crystal shining proudly. All the condensed energy of dreams glows bright, and a crown falls from heaven atop Sumire's head, her body glimmering bright. [break][break]

"Now, Aja!"[break][break]

A raucous chorus of draconic screams erupts from the many-headed hydra within the applin core, all the wyrms screeching in unison, bolstering her companion's resolve. Then, without missing a beat, Sumire, the newly-crowned drake, coils and flies into the air, delivering a whirling strike bathed in draconic energy. [break][break]

“Right. That’s something I like ‘bout dragons. They’re strong against their own. Turn something’s own strength against it.”[break][break]
Dragons and their kin stand at the mountaintop. Fitting, then, that only other creatures resting on the summit can fight them. Sol is no true dragon. He looks the part, but his heart lacks a dragon’s fire. Fitting, then, that Gabe kept Sol and Kohryu for company. They have the look of a dragon, but not their heart.[break][break]
Yet even still, Sol is mighty. While Tsubaki crowns Sumire, infinity energy bathes Sol. When he bursts forth like a hatchling into a violent new world, he burns like his very own sun. It shines bright all around them. The sunlight seeps into Smaug’s flesh.[break][break]
Both dragons fly down to meet their challengers. Sol meets Sumire in a dazzling, red-hot flare blitz. Dragon meets dragon in a clash of force that sends him tumbling to the ground with her, right in time for all three to be caught in Smaug’s earthquake.[break][break]
“Hold onto something!” He grips the guard rail for dear life. All around him, the cavern starts to rumble and shake. Smaug’s might demands tectonic plates move because he wills them to move. The earth shatters and splits while dragons roar.

They smash against the rough terrain, sending up a cloud of dust that dims the sun. Tsubaki frantically searches for sight of her beloved snake, covering her mouth with her sleeve. [break][break]

"Sumi!"[break][break]

The distinctive shape of Smaug then carves into the earth without missing a beat. Like freya morningstar 's Lyune, like Kouji Matsubara 's own paradox, the fear and awe that always accompany a Roaring Moon are just as intense as the very first time. She swallows, her throat dry, balling up her fists. She takes an instinctive step back, watching a fissure open up in her direction, like a jagged maw ready to swallow her whole. [break][break]

Navy's words do little for her. Down on the battlefield, there's nothing to hold onto by design. Open to the full terror of these fully trained pokemon's abilities, she braces for the worst. And then...[break][break]

Seven heads align in sync, roaring at the sky. Right in front of the girl, the earth splits open and shoots upward like a geyser, brimming with raw energy. Aja directing her earth power to stop the fissure in its place, Tsubaki simply stumbles back, falling onto her butt and watching the chaos unfold.[break][break]

Amid the dust, static electricity flickers. Sumire darts forth, lightning jumping from her fangs, a burst of thunder following her strike. Brought so low, the giant snake threatens to swallow the sun, like some chaoskampf of some ancient esoteric myth.[break][break]

Folding his arms, Navy does not speak. His Pokemon know their routine. Each has been trained to improvise, adapt, and overcome. Sumire’s fangs pierce deep into Sol. Even when caught in the throes of mega evolution, the electricity pierces deep into his body. Creatures of the sky are averse to electricity.[break][break]
Sol is not so weak as to fall after only one blow. Sumi is kind enough to stand close, clinging to him. The orange dragon opens his maw. Flames gather there. He spews forth a flamethrower, enhanced by the scorching sun above and the dragon’s nature. His flame burns out, sputters from overuse. Sol is Gabe beaten into the shape of a Pokemon. He burns bright, but all the fuel gets spent.[break][break]
Navy’s attention turns instead to Smaug, who launches himself like a missile. Flying low, just above the ground, he’s on a collision course with the Hydrapple. The seven headed hydra’s leader sticks out, exposing its throat…[break][break]
…leaving it open for a breaking swipe from the dragon’s vicious killing claws.

[attr="class","star2tsu4"]Ultra-hot flames lick Sumi's black scales. Cooking inside a suit of armor she cannot take off, she flails wildly in pain, but she does not surrender her grip. Ever the predator, she curls her bruised, scorched body around the Charizard and begins to squeeze tight, keeping it from taking to the air with her weight.[break][break]

As the Roaring Moon descends onto Aja, he lets out a single, syrup-y shot of venom, dousing the drake in a candy coating to slow its preeminent command of the air. That's all he can do, before the breaking swipe sends him careening along the ground, deep cut across his neck. [break][break]

Baki, meanwhile, remains in the sand. She clutches her hands so tight they're liable to press it into glass, from the burning intensity rising in her chest alone. [break][break]

"Do it... you've got this, press the advantage..."[break][break]

She whispers under her breath, staring intently.[break][break]

“You’d better be careful.” He warns Tsubaki. His voice comes in through a speaker near the challenger’s viewing area. “Sol’s most dangerous when someone gets him cornered like this.”[break][break]
His body starts to burn from the inside out. Gabe never had a sygna suit. If he did, he probably would have paired up with Kohryu first. Sol didn’t need to have that bond to understand his trainer’s soul. The fire inside of him bursts out, making him take on the appearance of a comet under a blazing sun.[break][break]
Even without his wings, he still builds up momentum. His flare blitz sends him shooting along the ground, jagged granite digging into Sumire from beneath while fire burns her from within. Sol roars in defiance, forcing his mega evolution to keep going.[break][break]
The flare blitz runs him straight into the apple dragon, three combatants crashing into each other with reckless ferocity. Smaug is trying to catch up, desperate to get back into the fray, but the syrup drenches his wings. Instead, he roosts, letting Sol do the work.

Sumire clings, twisting and squeezing tight, crunching down around the sun even as it sets alight. She lets out a fierce hiss of anger and of pain, her scales sizzling with the heat, but she plunges her fangs deep into the drake's flesh in order to stay connected.[break][break]

A hurtling mass of orange and black comes toward Aja, all of its heads poking out of his apple to peer at the incoming fireball. All at once, they open their mouths as if in shock, and then...[break][break]

"Shoot that thing outta the sky!!"[break][break]

Baki's voice cuts through the chaos like a bolt of lightning on a dark night. The hydra collectively amass their energy, sending a fickle beam straight at the incoming attack right as it connects. Orange and blue flames congeal into a maelstrom that covers everything, and Tsubaki shields her eyes, unable to look straight at the mass of energy without burning her retina. [break][break]
