After so many war wounds, the thought of a stray lightning bolt doesn’t bother him. The small gesture of goodwill helps give him a second wind, and he stands up, mustering up the energy to tell a lie.[break][break]

Otherwise you’d be training with the League’s best poison trainer instead.” Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki might disagree with his assessment, but gym leaders are not chosen idly. Just down the way is a battle pitch. Gym trainers and stray military personnel are already gathering there to start their morning routine. Spread through their ranks are some of Navy’s Pokemon, sparring with any challengers. Most of the gathered humans favor boxing techniques, putting a particular focus on footwork and evasion. They dance away from one another to the song of the sea.[break][break]
“Lots more folk training these days. All of ‘em getting ready for the war.” Hands in his pocket, he stares out to the sea.[break][break]
“Tell me somethin’. Why do you wanna fight? Is it just ‘cause you were born into it?”

They’re playing a game with frighteningly high stakes, a game that will end with one or more of them, and likely people they care about, dead. That battle won’t be fought today.[break][break]
Tomorrow may come and find them on opposing sides of drawn lines. They’ll play their part. Neither will truly like the taste of that draught, but they’ll drink it all the same. Fighting’s fun, and fighting each other’s just as fun as drinking with one another. It’ll pass the time until the people above them make peace or destroy everything.[break][break]
For now, he makes good on his word. A new engine roars to life like a Pyroar basking in the afterglow of evolution. Lizzy is tucked into her pokeball for a good rest, and they depart. It is not a long drive. They step into a quiet bar with a discreet man behind the counter. They’re slipped fingers of mead, and they drink.[break][break]
And life is good, for just today.

From sleeping stone comes a hero, towering over the two humans. Its eyes are a mirror of Navy’s, the same steely expression cast over both. They listen in silence to the maiden’s words. Though one is a simulation and the other only valorous in a forgotten past, both are bound by their understanding. Each nods, oblivious to the other.[break][break]
“The warrior’s road is hard.” Turning, he cracks his knuckles. Metal soars across the battlefield, gathering along a rusted sword. It soon becomes a full blade, gripped in the dog’s maw. All three stand united in purpose. If they are to survive what is to come, they must fight. Navy and Genny must grow stronger. Heroes must return, be they hero Pokemon or the sleeping memories of Galarian heroes.[break][break]
“But someone’s gotta walk. We see the ugly truth of the world so other people don’t gotta. That’s how I see this job.”[break][break]
Shuwen, Navy’s Urshifu, joins them. The fighting master looks up. One of his kin rushes towards them, its every step leaving a crater in its wake. Between the heroes and Eternatus is a road fraught with peril. Enemies, big and small, are coming for them now.[break][break]
Zacian rises high into the air. Its glorious behemoth blade carves apart the taller Urshifu like it is nothing more than a cake. Their foe shrinks and does, exposing ordinary but poisoned Pokemon at its feet. Those are for them. Navy strikes out, a sygna suit enhanced fire punch sending a Pokemon sprawling into Shuwen’s surging strikes.[break][break]
“So come on, Genny! Let’s use this battlefield for all it’s worth! Let’s get strong together.”

A small snort as he takes the final bite of his roasted smore. It tastes good, but they’ll taste better when summer is truly upon them. Navy says a quiet prayer to Arceus that the region will persist in maintaining its veneer of normalcy until then.[break][break]
“Hope you’re right. Man…I’m getting tired in my old age. I’ll nod off here if you wanna head back. Hattori and Voyager’ll let me know if anything happens.”

Springtide Storm is met by a diamond storm. Sakura petals blast against diamonds sharpened to a swordpoint sheen. Diancie’s regal bearing gives way to determined anger. She plays to win, no matter the game. Navy is reminded, once again, of how powerful these beings can be when they put their mind towards a task. The diamonds make approaching her impossible. They move with her will, wholly focused on protecting the princess.[break][break]
It would take pinpoint accuracy to breach her perfect defense. A glance down at Hattori tells him what to do. Water Shuriken fly through the storm of diamond feylight. Once, then another, and another. Three shuriken, thrown at different points, knocking enough diamonds out of place for the final shuriken to fly and hit Diancie.[break][break]
She huffs in frustration, the unexpected blow pushing her back.[break][break]
“Don’t think she liked getting hit.” Navy says, seeming to enjoy the notion of hurting Diancie as much as she enjoyed being hurt. The stone on Navy’s wrist begins to glow. “Better press the advantage quick, looks like that made her mad.”

His scarred hands rise to defend his vision from the clash, which combines with a deafening explosion. Roland stands resolute. Sparks fly from every joint. Whatever genius hand crafted these circuits did not anticipate their creation would push itself this far.[break][break]

At the touch, his Iron Valiant at last allows the blade to tilt towards the ground instead of Alpha.[break][break]

From where she enters, it must look like he’s simply sitting down. His back is to the gym’s front door. Her embrace startles him from sleep, the tail end of a snore turning into a surprised grunt. Sleep is rarer than gold in a war-torn region hellbent on pretending everything is normal and operating as it should be.[break][break]

“Agias!” The smaller of the two brothers says, trying to communicate complex ideas with a limited vocabulary. Perhaps trying to prove she has nothing to worry about, the smaller king tries to stand. His black-gold eyes look at the territorial dispute being waged on its behalf. It kindles a dragon’s rage in him, seeing another battling in his stead.[break][break]
Shuwen and the greater king have one another on the ropes. Neither one can give a quarter. The beat’s hands are raised in a boxer’s pose that mimics Navy’s. His arms throw out quick jabs, pulling back like a retreating Ekans. Koraidon tries to maul him with superior strength, but the dragon does not account for footwork. Technique keeps the Urshifu alive in a battle between man and monster.[break][break]
Koraidon charges. Shuwen sees it coming out of the corner of his eye and steps aside. King clashes against king. Two against one more than evens the score. With the apex predator’s attention divided, Shuwen finds an opening and sends the king crashing back. Only then, as both kings disappear in a flash of terastallized light, does Navy stumble out of the dark.[break][break]

But not before being forced to face a choice. Screens flash, showing the others above. Others, cast in the same situation, being tortured. Navy’s grip tightens around oscar clayton’s shoulder. Even in this sorry state, there is strength in the warrior’s grip.[break][break]
Two figures are shown on the screen being beaten to within inches of their lives. Navy grinds his teeth as he recognizes one and the inevitable reaction of another. Isaac Merlo does not deserve such treatment, any more than Eris Halla deserves to cry seeing him being treated as such.[break][break]
Nor does he relish seeing Melody Miro be hurt.[break][break]
His heart cries out, begging him to be the first to order the punishment of the weakling ward. Let Melody and the others be spared.[break][break]
No. Not gonna play your game, fucker.[break][break]
His eyes sharpen. Even if he can barely stand, he can speak.[break][break]
“Punish…m—” The words are mumbled. Their captors do not lie. It is a great labor to speak through this mask.[break][break]
“Me! Punish our ward instead. Make us stay here instead of going to the chamber!”

Roland’s blade shatters, and he smiles. It’s always like this for him. Someone backs him into a corner. He’s too dumb to know when to quit. Regroup, recharge, come back. That’s the m/o of a smart man.[break][break]
But a real man, in Navy’s world, has to be a little stupid. Someone told him that once and it stuck to the underside of his brain like glue. It’s a perfect justification for poor decisions.[break][break]
“You should know better than anyone this is just where I like to be.” His heart beats like it does not bear the weight of years. There’s no war outside. There’s just this battle, right in front of him, and victory looming just beyond the horizon.[break][break]
“Roland, you’re the same way, yeah? Always have been.”[break][break]
The iron warrior sparks and twitches. In his world of 1’s and 0’s, error messages flash across his screen unseen by humans. Logic tells him to back away. Even in the luxury of organized battle, he stands on the precipice of feeling the same cessation of motion he has visited upon others the humans call Iron Valiants.[break][break]
A blade flies through the air. Errors give way to thoughtless motion, ignorant of what his CPU processer tells him to do. It grasps the blade. The one-armed warrior looks down at the blade – the last feather of a fallen friend.[break][break]
He is bathed in the light of tera, the same light from which he was borne. In its glorious light is reflected worlds of pure fantasy. His eyes see the triumph of bloody combat and worlds of noble light. There are worlds ruled by the waves and endless rolling land.[break][break]
There’s one world that stands out brighter than any of them: a world of fantasy so surreal that every conceivable force in the universe wishes to see its undoing. It is a world where Gallades are reborn as knights. It’s a world where the dead walk and the living fall into their graves. It is his world, and the world his liege lord calls him.[break][break]
Roland is crowned in a stellar crown. His blade is a blade of purest light, the finest sword of its age – the equal of any weapon that would be thrown against this world.[break][break]
There’s enough left in him for one more strike, standing on the edge of victory and defeat. While Alpha is forced to recharge from a blast that damn near destroyed the knight wholesale, they have a moment to strike. Toshinori and Obstagoon dance in his peripherals, jet punches and drain punches meeting obstructions and slashes.[break][break]
“ROLAND!” Navy shouts. “SHOW ‘EM OUR HEARTS. THEN SHOW ‘EM THEIRS.”[break][break]
And he does, moving forward against Hoenn’s greatest trainer. Fae light strikes like a rainbow as he tries the same precise strike as before: a spirit break to clash against Kyle’s ace.

Shuwen’s fists don’t stop moving. He beats them forward endlessly against the tide, pressing on towards the horde. There is no end to the monsters. When ancient ice is brought forth to do battle with the angels, he breathes easy. At last, worthy aid.[break][break]
The attack meant for him from the mother beast never reaches him. Hattori’s substitute sees to that. Navy lands near Tsubaki, his loyal shinobi clinging tight to his back. Both disappear, leaving green dolls in their place. Navy and Hattori leap from Tsubaki’s shadow.[break][break]
She is draped in a veil of darkness. Glassy dark slime reveals the girl trapped within. To her father, who seems to shift between old and young, it looks like a hellish prison. He has no specialized tools with which to safely pry her out.[break][break]
“Anyone ever tell you that you’re extra, kid?” He speaks in a confident voice, the voice of some scrappy kid on the streets. Time works differently under the sea. It flows backwards. Water leaks out the side of the stream. His hands seem to function as they used to, before they first came here.[break][break]
He plunges them into the abyss. He plunges himself into the darkest pit, the vilest poison every concocted. Every millimeter of them is made to poison. Pokemon can withstand it enough to do battles. For humans, it is like dipping his body in molten liquid. It seeps into him, his first taste of an angel’s kiss.[break][break]
It’s all for her. Every scrap of pain, every old wound reopening at once. Reminders of all the many battles he has fought in one short year scream up at him in agony. His heart feels like it’s ripping again.[break][break]
But he has her. He feels her body within. Navy screams as he pulls her out.[break][break]
“HE. CAN’T. HAVE. YOU.”

“Man, you really brought out Alpha.” He’s impressed with himself. Navy remembers when Kyle's ace was just a pooch.[break][break]
Fits you like a glove. A younger man said in those long ago days.[break][break]
He looks to Vortigern. His worry isn’t enough to protect him from this. Alpha is living proof of how far removed from human logic this region has become. He has unlocked his own hidden potential. He has z-moves, a beautiful tera crown, and has gorged upon Eternatus’s power. Springtide storm is a move for legends, but it has been seized by common men and mon.[break][break]
In Hoenn, anyone can be someone. That’s a lesson Navy has taken to heart. Even a simple dog can bite a dragon’s throat out.[break][break]
“Fuck…’ His strong exhale accompanies Vortigern having the wind knocked out of him. Their minds are one. He’s thrown into the rarest of emotions a dragon can feel – desperation. Vortigern’s mind, Navy’s mind, calculates the optimal path to victory.[break][break]
Kill him. Kill the head. He won’t expect that. Seize ultimate victory. Discard human ru-[break][break]
A flash of red sees Vortigern recalled. The dragon is rejected. Hoenn has enough dragons.[break][break]
What it needs is a warrior.[break][break]
Roland steps forward, iron eyes sweeping across the battlefield. Toshinori, roaring in furious rebuke, swims through the air to Obstagoon. They’ll be pinned down fighting each other. That just leaves…[break][break]
Roland. Roland with his cracked blade, the poison, the stealth rocks piercing his skin. Roland, a creature which should not even exist, versus a Pokemon dismissed by most.[break][break]
A memory dances across the machine’s mind. It burns, remembering what once was. He remembers white hands of flesh and wearing an elegant dancer’s gown. His liege lord had not yet given him a dawn stone. He remembers Alpha’s fur, how warm it was…[break][break]
“Roland, Toshi. I believe in you guys. My final two. Show ‘em your hearts.”
And now, he turns his blade upon that Pokemon. Roland charges. He swings his sword in a wide, vicious arc. The spirit break would end this quickly if it could simply land…[break][break]
But it doesn’t land. Not with the fracture line along Roland’s galaxy blade rapidly expanding.
