“Remember when it used to feel this good in February every year?” Before the long war and before Kyurem, Hoenn enjoyed tropical summers. There are some, Navy does not doubt, who enjoy having snowfall every year. Were he to meet any such people, and were he not a government official, he would politely tell them to move to Sinnoh. Then, they could have all the snow they could ever want.[break][break]
Beneath the Dyna Tree, resting in its shadow alongside the king of bountiful harvests, it is warm. A small fire has been built. Over it, he roasts marshmallows. On paper, they are defending the king. In practical terms, he doesn’t need much defending. Their Pokemon patrol and do all the real work. It leaves the humans alone with time enough to swap stories.[break][break]
The king slumbers unseen beneath the tree. He took his leave after drinking a little too much mead. Navy does not press the issue or dwell on the point, wanting the high king to keep his dignity. Instead, he chews at his summer food.[break][break]
“You know something crazy?” He frames a thought as a rhetorical question. “Crazy as last year was, it seems kinda tame. Uh, compared to the stuff I read about in the AQUA files, I mean. Sounds like Stone, Baldur, you, and the rest got up to some crazy shit back when I was busy taking care of Gabe.”

"that's part of the job, i guess." doing crazy, that is.

his eyes stare at the fire, longing for the warmth that came with it. he didn't have to bother with seasonal clothes before since hoenn was temperate enough to not have a need for them.

he's adamant enough to only wear a thin jacket over a cotton shirt since he was convinced it wouldn't be as cold as the silent icelands.

"compared to back then, it felt so normal now to kyle of the present. aren't you glad you get to do some normal people things before you decided to join us in the crazy?"

the change was slow and subtle that kyle hadn't realized that normal peacekeeping responsibilities under his job as an officer would soon evolve to something like defending the world against giant beings and otherworldly invaders.

he would have just given him a smile, but a laugh comes out instead, finding it funny that he had externalized a thought that has long lingered in his head.

"are you sure that's the case when he's the one person in the region that should be doing more than the minimum?"

it's a lighthearted conversation, but he doesn't want to let his thoughts get filtered in a chat with a friend.

kyle never was the type to fish for compliments. though he's learned how to take them well, there were simply statements where he finds himself being able to refute if he doesn't find it aligning with his truth.

it was probably inappropriate given his history, but kyle isn't know to devoutly follow tact in front of his friends anyways.

he shouldn't probably entertain it though. noah is pretty possessive as well, after all.

"then i guess we'll just be worrying about wild pokemon," he tells navy. they were culprits to stealing fruit from the dyna tree as well. "do you have an actual scary pokemon that can chase those away as well?"

kyle has his mightyena that can chase birds away and scare any other pokemon with its intimidate, but they're too noisy when they get riled up.

his shoulders give way to a shrug.

"it just... happened, i guess."

it's an actual answer, one that even kyle has no reason to give out.

he never pondered on it since it just seemed natural that they were going to end up together. noah pushed for it to happen, and kyle gave it a try. it's the most vanilla love story ever to grace hoenn.

"i-i-it's just, um... dude! you're literally asking the video game nerd about love!"

he grows red, jabbing navy lightly on the shoulder for pushing him to this direction. he covers the lower half of his face with his hand, muffling his next words with embarrassment.

"...he took me on a cliched date once, and i liked it."

and kyle wasn't a person who gets impressed by the overused tropes easily.

“Hahaha.” Navy’s laugh is deep, a rumble that starts in his chest and lifts out of his mouth like a soft-spoken eruption. “Man…if I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were happy with the cliché little date.” The thought makes him beam. Kyle, as much as anyone, deserves to be happy. Hard times are ahead, and the bright moments will grow dimmer and dimmer until the sun rises once more.[break][break]
“It’s like I always tell you: everything’s a cliché ‘til it happens to you. Then, it just feels…right. Nothing wrong with a love story like that. It’s an old song, but I like the ending. You never replay a game just ‘cause you liked the story? I do that with movies a lot.” [break][break]
A break for bites punctuates the words. Guarding people is hungry work, even with the least intimidating intimidators in the world doing the heavy lifting.[break][break]

"i didn't actually realize he was flirting with me!" he tells navy. "i hired him to walk my dogs since he wasn't being direct and it was easy to misinterpret the things he said."

on hindsight, they weren't. kyle just wasn't the type to see things outside of the perspective of those with rose-tinted glasses back then.

he sighs afterwards. a longing smile that wants to revisit the old times paints his expression.

"our relationship isn't really out of the ordinary, but yeah, it's still special."

kyle turns to navy.

"i'm sure you'll get to experience something similar to it too once it actually settles in."
