You don't get many opportunities to visit Navy these days. Between your injuries, his Elite Four promition, and the dozens of other incidents going on throughout the region, it's hard to fine the time. Still, today is one of those rare days where both the stars and your schedules align, and so, you find yourself in Dewford Town once more.

And when two middle-aged men get together, what else are they supposed to do but work shop on their vehicles?

Or, well, their "vehicles".

"...Navy, this is a lizard." You state the obvious, looking down at the Cyclizar with a confused expression. "How the hell am I supposed to do an oil change on a reptile?"

“Dunno if she’s supposed to drink the stuff, but hell – she’s tough. She’s put weirder stuff in her maw and survived. She once saved Eris Halla from some sugar free gummy bewears.” A noble sacrifice, one that almost killed her. To be a hero is to suffer.[break][break]

Yeah, makes sense. Not like you haven't put weirder stuff into your body before. Can't be any worse for you than the bottom shelf """Best Value""" vodka they sell at the big Pokemarts. So, with a shrug, you grab a bottle of oil and crack it open like it's a cold one.

Or, at the very least, you try to. Times have really changed, you know? Back in your day, motor oil came in these cans you could rip open without even breaking a sweat. Now, though, with these child safe caps? They're a real bastard to open, especially when you're down a... Fuck it. Don't even bother. Instead of continuing your fruitless struggle, an impatient hand reaches to a Pokeball and calls out your Metagross. Wordlessly, a brutal claw reaches out, and with surgical precision, opens the bottle in a single movement.

"Here." You turn and address the Cyclizar once more, beginning to pour the oil like a water fountain in the direction of the living bicycle's mouth. "Drink up."

Lizzy grins like a kid in a candy store who just got told to fill her cart. Wagging her tail, she waits impatiently for the oil to be opened. Blessed as she is with big wheels, the gods did not see fit to give her opposable thumbs. Perhaps that was Arceus childproofing this over-curious lizard.[break][break]
“Scree!” She says with gratitude, if Pokemon can even express such notions. “Scree, scree, scree!” She drains the oil can like it’s been a long day at the office. After it goes down the hatch, she belches.[break][break]
A belch for most would simply be unflattering. For a dragon…?[break][break]
A long stream of fire shoots from her lips. Lizzy has the foresight to aim it out the open door. It’s the perfect trajectory to ensure no one gets hurt in the blast. No one save her, and her pride. After the flames finally dispel, she stumbles around. Her cheeks are flushed red. She clings to the Metagross, chirping softly like it is the most handsome creature she’s seen.[break][break]
That estimation holds true into Arthur, Kommo-O dragon prince of Alola, happens to walk by. Lizzy offers him a soft, understated coo and her best come hither stare.[break][break]
Arthur keeps walking. By the clanging of his scales, it picks up into a run when he makes his way out of sight.

...You take a step away from the Cyclizar. Then another. Then another. Metagross looks at you with pleading eyes, as though silently begging you to save it. Instead, you slowly turn away, leaving it to his dark fate.

That lizard is a freak, and the less you have to acknowledge it, the better.

"Well, my work here is done." You declare, tossing the empty bottle across the room and missing the trash can by a good few meters. With a shrug, you decide to do nothing about that. Instead, you crouch down next to Navy, stealing a glance under the truck as you do. Hm. Yeah, that's a car alright. It's got metal, it's got parts, it's got everything a truck needs. "How's your end going? Have you fixed, uh..."

You pause.

"Actually, what the hell's even wrong with your truck, anyway?"

Neither is Lizzy, who tries to cling to Metagross and speak to it in the language of Pokemon. She can’t handle her oil very well, but she runs like a dream when it gets out of her system. Navy finds he does not want to think about whatever is going to happen next between them.[break][break]
“When I find out whichever cunt it was on your side that burned my first truck, I’m gonna kill their ass.” He speaks like it was a human or Pokemon that died and not machinery. “That thing was my baby. Had ‘er since I turned 18.”

You close your eyes, rest your hand on the truck door, and take a deep breath. When your eyes open, you notice a dent beneath your fingers. Wordlessly, you peel your hand away and hide it in your pocket. You'll consider that minor act of vandalism to be revenge enough.

If only it could be that easy to avenge your other grievances.

"Well, for what it's worth, the new truck ain't bad, either." You muse, though even you know how hollow of a consolation that is. Still, the less you have to talk about a burned wreck, the better. "Not that I'm the expert on cars or anything, but as far as I can tell? You sure as hell could've done a whole lot worse."

Back when he was barely keeping the lights on. Back when he’d eat some cup noodles and say that was good for the day. After Galar, he finds it hard to remember that street smart twenty-something who’d mouth off at all the League’s best and brightest for asking a king the wrong questions. It was a lifetime ago, so he reads the memories the way most people read old comic books.[break][break]
He envies Shred for his bad memory. It wasn’t just bad memory, though. Alcohol helped.[break][break]
Speaking of alcohol, maybe Lizzy has the right idea.[break][break]
“Say, I got them to start selling mead down at the honky tonk down the way. Mead. Ever tried it? It’s damn good.” Before Lizzy can cause too much damage, Navy pulls her back into a pokeball.[break][break]

Of course, his definition of "corruption" and yours are a little different, aren't they? He's one of the lucky ones, hoisted up by nepotism, having the right friends in the right places that got him where he needed to go. You, on the other hand... Well, you were more the wrong place at the wrong time. The Silent Icelands, standing across from illeana reyes. There couldn't be a worse time and place in the whole damn world.

And in a fairer world, it wouldn't have happened. In a fairer world, you'd be healthy, happy, and free. But though you may be an outlaw and he may be a lawman, the both of you know that the world isn't really fair.

At least, not yet.

But that's enough of that for now. Navy offers you a chance to drink. You're not really supposed to, mind. A Gym Leader and a Rocket Beast drinking together likely won't go down well, and it's not like you can exactly hide your identity very well, either. Plus, given the state of you, you're sure it'll wreak havoc on your throat, but, well... Fuck it. Life is for living.

"Can't say I have." You shake your head, returning Metagross to his Pokeball with one tap and opening the truck door. "But I'm not the picky type. You get us a nice discreet table in the corner, and I'll try anything you put in front of me."
