His heart soars with rare, unabashed joy at the sight of Shred’s blood. Some part of him laughs a warrior’s laugh, deep, hearty, full of life. Gone is his joy as Shred falls with but a few parting words. Gone is any triumph as he realizes what he must now do.[break][break]
Before him is a beast. Before him is one of Rocket’s greatest monsters. Before him is a foe worth killing, his own bleeding body serving as testament to the righteousness of what he could do, if only he had the strength to sink his fangs into the fallen’s neck.[break][break]
He takes a step forward, dragging along his twisted red blade with him. Zaria charged him to do his duty, and so he must follow through.[break][break]
A memory comes with the step. Cheap beer, bad cigarettes, a shitty movie. There’s replays of a Galarian sports match, one of the good ones. Both men reflect on how they’d do, if they were the man in the arena.[break][break]
Another step. howard slayte’s face swims in his mind. There was always something so sad in his eyes, whenever Shred’s name was brought up.[break][break]
Another step, a memory of a clash with Grigori Sokolov. That weathered knight’s words were steeped in regret, so assured that his only options are death or victory. What chance will he have of proving otherwise, if he slays that man’s friend?[break][break]
Shred is beneath him. Navy shakes. Unseen, a howl tells him what he must do.[break][break]
“No.” He says at last. “Not, not like, not like this.” He looks to something unseen, the last of his strength fading at last. “If he dies, he’ll have that axe in his hand. He’ll be armed. He’ll be—” Navy slumps, collapsing alongside Shred. His consciousness fades, his chance at ending this monster before he steps into the full stride of his power gone. Navy’s body twists into mist, a shadow recovering his pokeballs and speeding them away.[break][break]
Another ripple cast upon the pond’s surface, another bout of inaction that will spell ruin.

“Get ‘em…shit…get ‘em to a Pokemon Center.” The Warrior wobbles, all the power of his forward momentum dying. “Almost…almost felt alive there for a minute, girl.” He holds onto Zacian to steady himself, patting her mane. She allows this, knowing the pains he has endured.[break][break]
“I need to rest, Cyan.” A quiet name, just for them, now that the battle is over.[break][break]
“Then rest well, Navy. Roland and Valkyrie will be cared for.”[break][break]
A nod, and he is gone, just like that star. He will remember these Rockets well, as he would any strong trainer.

Navy opens his mouth to shout the same platitudes he’s given to Rockets far less deserving than Grigori Sokolov. Folk like Elisabeth Fiorelli and bryan delarosa hold no regret in their hearts that he can find. A man need be no mind reader to feel what lies in the undercurrent of Grigori’s words. There’s a chance. All he has to do is—[break][break]
A howl cuts such notions short. It echoes through the whole bunker, out into the forests beyond. That howl was once the herald of Navy and Howard’s return from another world. Mist begins to gather, but nothing makes itself known. Not yet. The howl is a reminder: Grigori Sokolov speaks absolute truth. Navy is his enemy. Reconciliation at this hour is a luxury Dahlia Goode’s League can little afford.[break][break]
“Shit.” The word is spoken in a growl, the sheriff turning to look at his mad paradox beast. Fainting the Xurkitree only rouses its instincts. Maybe, just maybe, that will save the lives of the Pokemon resting at his hip.[break][break]
“We’ll meet again.” He promises Grigori a promise he has no business making before he turns his attention to survival. Ballbreaker proves every bit as capable of busting walls. The beast breaks open a path, leading Navy down into the network of tunnels Rocket is building here. All he can do is run, scramble in the darkness, and pray that he can find another exit before he’s buried alive.

It’s exhausting. It’s intoxicating. Every haggard breath is a sharp splinter of pain in his lungs. Battle is a young man’s game. They play it well all the same, every blow making Navy wonder if this would be the last one. Somewhere far away, an old wolf watches his body as it rests in still waters. She sees that he’s smiling.[break][break]
“I’ll send you back to Petalburg in a body bag.” He lies, though there is power in this lie. Inwardly, he senses all the metal in the area. He wonders if this is how Zaria feels when the time comes to empower Ascalon. With a hundred invisible arms, he reaches out, pulling every stray bit of metal in, right towards him.[break][break]
He leaps to the air in a wordless scream, forgetting to speak, forgetting to be human. Ascalon rises high with him as all that metal forms around its edge. The blade glows with red killing light, rage pouring from his soul into the metal. Learned men call this stroke the behemoth blade when Zaria cleaved giants.[break][break]
The warrior falls upon the beast speaking to him in Shred’s voice, a red streak of flames, like a comet coming to wipe the slate clean.

Like Beau, Navy ducks low. Leviathan is recalled, his part of the day’s work done until they find out what’s further inside. His eyes adjust to the darkness, though it doesn’t take much. With sunlight coming streaming in from above, they see…[break][break]
…and are seen. Several men look at them, momentarily surprised. They look like Deerling in headlights, but the moment passes. It is replaced by frantic activity, men going for their pokeballs and scrambling to get a few speedboats ready.[break][break]
“Gentlemen!” Navy grins, hand on an ultra ball. “You’re all gonna have to come down to the station with Mr. Fontaine and me. Answer some questions ‘bout all that fun stuff you’ve probably got in those boats. Easy way or the hard way, boys?”[break][break]
They’re already sending out some Pokemon that pass for heavy hitters. Two Machoke are running towards Dewford’s finest at a full sprint. Behind them is a dark Palafin skipping across the water, a regular supervillain if Navy’s ever seen one.[break][break]
“Hard way it is.” He smiles at Beau right before unleashing Shuwen. Navy’s Urshifu rushes forward, headband blowing dramatically, and catches one of the Machoke with a flurry of surging strikes.[break][break]
“Ora!” Shouts the bear.

Play the flute in the forest. An old man’s voice chuckles. The thought is dismissed. That is not his story. His story was long since told, and so he guides the living girl despite her protest.[break][break]
“Curious little fella you’ve got with you, Miss Leading Lady.” Oblivious to any thoughts of John Douglas Sullivan, he steels himself as they pass petrified humans and pokemon. Each of them is frozen in terror. Their bodies are trapped, and he has no notion of where the souls go. There is something beyond these borderlands, for borders mark the beginning of one place and the end of another. What that is, where this road leads, Gabriel does not know.[break][break]
Someone does, and its form flies overhead. Yveltal’s great wings beat across the sky, a crimson stain upon greyscale. Kohryu sinks low, coiling around his master. Yveltal does not see them, does not notice them or deign to acknowledge their trudge across the ground. Gabe says a quiet prayer of thanks, for they all trespass in different ways. Each of them is an insult to the god of death.[break][break]
“That was Yveltal, Miss.” A casual tilt of his right index finger up to the trail of scarlet growing faint in the sky. “Lucky us. Would’ve sucked if they’d looked down.”[break][break]
But she asked a question, and he feels the need to answer.[break][break]

Shred strips away all the pretense, all the fool’s gold wisdom, all his ideals. What is left in their place is an ugly truth, written across his face in an ugly snarl. In a distant garden, in a dreamed world, he cast aside envy, hate, grudges, and fear. How easy it is to do those things with a man like howard slayte at your side. How easy it is, in some imagined world, to be better.[break][break]
He envies Shred. He envies Shred for the paradise that awaits him beyond the veil. There lies Valhalla, where a warrior might sup and drink and fuck and fight to his heart’s content. That way lies glory. That way lies honor in this toothless age of laws. If anything waits beyond life’s final door for Navy besides the void he beheld before, it is Elysium. It is gentle rest for a man who wants nothing of the sort.[break][break]
“So be it.”[break][break]
His words are a growl, lips twisting into a hateful snarl. He rages against the world, against the truth, with a savage fury. Ascalon appears in his hand, twisted. It is misshapen, far larger than it was before, more a sharpened club than the sword of heroes.[break][break]

For just one moment, whether by hallucination or the grace of crystalline possibility, Navy shows Shred his real face. It is a savage thing, a wolf clad in dark armor bearing a wicked sword. The moment passes. The Warrior meets Shred, his blade an iron head smashing against the weapon brought to bear.[break][break]
Roland cries out in a mechanical voice, left weaponless at a crucial moment. His cry echoes on into silence as the Grimmsnarl shatters one of Navy’s mightiest Pokemon.[break][break]
There is no time for consideration, no time for thought. There is only the mad swinging of his sword, rage, and a foe who must be destroyed.

“Greg---” That one word, spoken after listening as a captive audience, is all he can manage. What follows that word is decisive action on Grigori Sokolov’s part. Energy tendrils come at Navy while he grips his pokeball. They swing and he feels a powerful pulse of electricity flare through his body. What words he might speak are lost in agony. Far away, the body resting in Avalon convulses in the water and spits blood.[break][break]
Only his muscle spasm saves him. His finger twitches, hand gripping around the pokeball. It finds the button and unleashes a monster. There is a scientific name for the creature that comes from the ball. One of the League’s brightest dubbed the creature Great Tusk. Navy, having seen the thing shatter boulders, calls it Ballbreaker.[break][break]
Its presence in this bunker is a double-edged sword. Good for Navy’s continued existence, bad for negotiating a peaceful conclusion to this exchange. Ballbreaker sounds its trumpet, sets its eyes upon the strange, wired alien, and charges. Its headlong rush crushes concrete beneath its mighty feet, cutting a path forward for his trainer.[break][break]
“Greg, wait!” Navy pleads, though he knows the words fall upon deaf ears.

Shuwen crests the hill where sand meets grass. Walking down towards the shore, he plods a meticulous course. Though it’s been a few months since their daring prison escape, he still hasn’t fully recovered. Navy’s been happy to let him sit out many of the region’s battles. Every warrior deserves his rest, and Dewford needs its armor. The burned bear limps to Cass and gives her a stoic nod.[break][break]
“Oh, hey Shuwen. Fancy meeting you here.” Navy waves his hand between Cass and Shuwen. “Remember Cass?” Another nod. “He’s really bad at expressing himself, but he’s glad you’re alright. This guy and I are really in sync when it comes to what we’re thinking.”[break][break]

“At least I’m fuckin’ standing up for somethin’, Shred, or Jack, or whatever the hell you’re calling yourself these days!” All Shred has done is tell him the truth and it uncorks the bottle of his rage. Inside him is a dragon’s rage, as much as he masquerades as some noble thing. Roland, ever the loyal iron knight, winces both at the words and at the power his prehistoric foe saps from him. Seeds sprout into carnivorous plants along his joints, a promise of new life built in the ruins of the old.[break]
“I’d kill Livy if I could, or Silph, or so many of those bastards – but then you’d be right.” You, Rocket, all the people who tell him might makes right. That’s what the creed boils down to, stripped away of its pretense. They serve at the pleasure of the boss, and who is the boss if not the strongest? A man powerful enough to seize that title could hold the world in his hand, to do with as he pleased.[break][break]
“All the shit I’ve been through would be for nothing. All the people who depend on me’d realize the guy they look up to’s just some psycho who gets off on fighting. Hoenn deserves better than that, even if somethin’ good might grow in the ashes of the world you burn.”[break][break]
“Roland! Keep it up! Don’t back down!” Each word is spoken like the decisive stroke of a sword. Roland hops forward, right into the path of a black ball thrown by Navy. Within that ball he sees a thousand worlds, emerging stellar, his revolving crown exuding power. Crystalline energy gathers along the blade’s edge, rent in a tera blast that promises to hurt him as much as the Slither Wing.

Eddie puts Navy at ease, just like he always does. He breathes easy. Rest, at last, starts to call to him again. His smile is mirrored on the body resting in the water beneath him. Perhaps it is a trick of the light, but his wounds seem to not be as grievous as they were before Eddie and Terrakion made their visit.[break][break]
“You’re talking to the kettle, man. Just now, I think Hoenn needs more dumb tough guys. Get ‘bout twelve of us together and we’ll run Rocket out into the sea.” It’s empty words, hot air, but it feels good to say them all the same. They’ll win this war the right way, they must, or else they’ll find themselves dealing with another Rocket soon enough.[break][break]
“I have to go back to sleep. It’s…it’s hard, staying awake, when I’m like this.” His form grows faint just as he says the words, coming in and out of focus like a movie directed by a bad cinematographer. “You two can stay as long as you want, or head back. Just mind your manners ‘round Zacian. She’s a real hothead.” He laughs, and Zacian looks like she’d have about a thousand things to say, had she a human tongue.[break][break]
“Go kick some ass, Eddie. I’ll join you soon.”

A small, black shape forms under Lucia. Hattori, content to let the battle play out, intervenes to help keep Lucia afloat. A soft ja is accompanied by a pat on the head. He freezes a bit of the water, helping her into the platform. In the time it took for the shinobi to do that, Navy was rushing forward into the sea, forgetting all about ordering Roland. A child’s safety trumps all.[break][break]
Roland, for his part, beholds the clash between Hero and Wavecrest. Keeping his distance, he skips across the water’s surface, doing little more than firing stray thunderbolts when he finds opportunity to send them flying. Hero is, at the end of the day, the hero of this story. It falls to Lucia and Hero to tame Wavecrest. Navy, Roland, and now Hattori are simply here to help, supporting characters in this young trainer’s journey.[break][break]
“We’ve got you.” Navy says in a gentle voice, climbing onto the impromptu platform made by Hattori. “You’ve got this, Lucia. Look at Hero, holding his own. Encourage him.” Wisely, there’s no crowd forming on the beach – a fact which leads Navy to say a quiet prayer to Arceus. He pumps a fist in the air.[break][break]
“Go, Hero, go! Lucia named you well! Show Wavecrest what you’ve got!” He throws each word out as if from his soul, encouraging Hero like he’s the star of his own sports movie. It’s bad form, and he tells trainers all the time that life is no game, but just now it seems appropriate – that big bug is holding his own against a Gyarados, and deserves his praise.

There sits a wall of polished granite, a quiet little corner of a larger arena. Into this wall is inscribed advice by the victors. Win or lose, every challenger is afforded the right to view this wall, but only the victors can mark the granite with their wisdom. Many of those who lose simply storm out in shame, the notion of taking advice forgotten.[break][break]
“This here’s one of my favorite things about my gym. I hope you keep this here when you take over. Per tradition, you can carve whatever you want into this wall. After you’re done, we’ll head back up top.”
