Cass is not entirely sure if it's been a good idea to take Eira and Thalia out at the same time, but right now, they're content with keeping a distance from one another. It's also a fact that Cass put Saude on Thalia-duty, in case she gets the idea of stealing something again ... which will probably happen at some point, but she can pray not. Her Silcoon Philomena is, as ever, attached to her bag as she walks the streets of Dewford.

Passing by the gym, she can't help but notice the change in scenery there - remembering an article about Navidson retiring the spot to his protegee or something like that ... "Hmm?" There's a slight break to the aesthetic, however, as she walks in a little bit closer ... the still visible paintings of a child on the wall. A style that is a bit familiar, if she thinks about it ... "Ohh, so it's Eris who painted those ..."

Coincidence is a powerful thing. Some would say that there is no such thing, that every path that every human and pokemon walks was determined long ago. When Navy turns the corner around his old gym, sipping on a milkshake just in time to hear a young lady speak Eris Halla’s name, it feels like it’s no coincidence. He looks at the girl, regards her menagerie of Pokemon, and smiles broadly.[break][break]
“Oh, you’re a friend of Eris’s?” He asks, though he moves on quickly. “Uh, not to intrude. This used to be my gym. The name’s Navy.” The sheriff looks her over, his eyes squinting, though not with any hostility. It’s like he’s looking at an old movie, or hearing a lyrics of a song whose name he has forgotten.[break][break]
“You seem familiar. We met before?”

Cass jumps slightly as someone suddenly talks to her, but the surprise quickly calms itself into slight caution and memory. It would be hard to grow up in Hoenn and not know of the previous Dewford Gym Leader and still Elite Four of the region, despite her mother's badmouthing of the League. And in this instance, there's another memory that's clearer in her mind.

Remembering who's been there to help so her pokémon - so no one - would die.

"Yes, I think that's true ..." A quite fragile friendship yet, as it's merely blossomed, but something that may further continue to intertwine, and already has. "I didn't expect to see her drawings here - I just recently learned that she's behind the Wooper house and all the drawings there," she says, chuckling a bit as she eases a bit. "I'm ... Cass." For a moment, she considers a fake name, but eventually decides against it.

At Navy's question whether they met before, she feels her throat dry up, but nods as she cradles Jon in her arms. "Yes, we did ... it was ... the prison ship." She looks at him with caution, wondering if he'd remember now - if she might already have said too much.

The mention of Eris’s wooper house makes Navy smile the warm smile of a career older brother. Wiser men than he say art is good for the soul, and that it mends wounds. Eris’s soul has many wounds to heal, and so he is glad she could use his gym to help with that. It is, after all, what he does all this for.[break][break]
Talk of the prison shifts the smile towards sympathy. Eyes widen, recognition dawns. His eyes scan her again. Though in that maelstrom of action, idiocy, and plain rage he did not see her hold a red chain, he remembered someone with hair like hers, hidden by a mask.[break][break]
“I’m sorry you had to go through that, Cass.” His voice is gentle, steeped in concern. “Nobody should’ve. Not Eris, not you.” Yet they live in strange times, where even children are called to the court of gods, monsters, and kings. “I'm Navy, by the way. Sheriff Navidson on paper but I don't much like titles. You holdin' up alright? If there's anything I can do, let me know.” To serve the League is to defend its people, especially its young. Though some might say it is no fault of theirs, the final assessment remains the same: by allowing the Loyal Three to capture this young lady, the League failed her. If he can make that right, he will.

Seeing Navy smile so warmly when Cass mentions the "Wooper house", some part of her guard might start to crack. As weary as she is towards any League member, it's hard to stay overly weary here. And sincere words follow, too, making her avert her eyes from this concerned honesty.

Eventually, she shrugs, attempting to play it off while her hands tremble slightly as she holds Jon a bit closer, "Yeah, it's ... ..." She shakes her head. At least her friends were with her. She doesn't know what else might've happened - if she could still preserve that little bit of goodness if there's no righteousness to hold her up. And how selfish it is, to wish that they too suffered ... even if she can imagine that they, too, prefer that over any other possibility.

"It's hard not to have heard of Sheriff Navidson, even if I'm not usually here," Cass then chuckles, trying to ease away for a moment to think, consider. "We've been in Dewford and around the gym on a school trip before the handover." Though they didn't manage to meet him in person back then. "And ... ... thanks, Navy. Also ... also for back then. Uhm, would you mind to ... talk ... a bit ...?"

Hearing her speak of his reputation puts guilt in the pit of his stomach where pride should well. How many calamities could he have helped avert if he’d taken up the mantle of Sheriff Navidson years ago, back when his brother still lived? It was pointless to dwell on the point, especially when someone needed him to be Sheriff Navidson right now.[break][break]
“Sure, Cass. We can talk. You mind walkin’ and talkin’? It helps me think.” Action helps him think. Some part of him contemplates inviting her into the gym, where he has a small office. It reminds him of when he was young and he got scolded by the principal. He’d rather not give Cass that impression, so a stroll along the beach it was.[break][break]
“What’s on your mind?” Rather than filling her head with the many opinions he has about their imprisonment, he opens the floor to Cass. It seems to him that she has much to say, and he hopes to give her the chance to voice as much as she wishes.

"Relatable," she smiles faintly at Navy's words, nodding as she follows along. "The constant change in scenery can help quite a lot." She's a restless one by nature, and walking helps her sort out her thoughts. She is quiet, too, until they also reach the beach area which is currently fairly deserted - only a few other people that also quickly vanish out of sight.

But there's also the thing with other people - they don't necessarily listen, even if they could.

At Navy's prompt, she appears hesitant for another moment, but eventually nods. "I just ... I really wanted to thank you for ... helping out there with that insane plan. It was ... a bit hard, getting through that last patch of that ... whole thing. With the. You know. Megalopolans." Just thinking back on it made her ball her trembling hands to fists, and she shakes her head. The way judgement has been cast so easily in the heat of the moment. "I mean, did you recover well?" she then asks, maybe by reflex shifting attention away from her as she becomes aware of her hands and arms again, and their purple stains and scarring.

Insane plan?[break][break]
He thinks the words, but does not speak them. His memories of that day are sporadic at best. Much of it was spent in an adrenaline high, a frantic fever pitch of frenzy. All of them stood united against three dynamaxed monsters and they triumphed. How could they not triumph when the gods of creation were called to do battle?[break][break]
“And I’m sorry you had to see so many of your government’s finest try and murder someone.” Some might call what they did justice. An eye for an eye. It’s an old world order, a vicious pastime from when their species was younger. They have grown up, and they must be better.[break][break]
“Shuwen’s the one you should be thanking. All I could do was lay there.” A pause, followed by him realizing she wouldn’t know who that was. “My Urshifu. Didn’t take me too long to recover, but it didn’t look so hot for him for a minute.”[break][break]
Navy looks to her own cabal of Pokemon. He can’t recall if these were the ones who accompanied Cass that day.[break][break]
“Notice anything weird about the Pokemon you had with you?”

Thinking back on it, light almost flashes ruby red in front of her eyes. From spilled blood on any side, to Azelf's dying gem, to a general vision that is tinged with a deep red purple hue as everything ... became a lot.

She couldn't hold back the dry chuckle at Navy's words, a humorless laugh that is followed by an apologetic smile. It's not really the first time, is it? A system promising justice could only do so much with so many people and people holding power over one another ... ... "I'm glad to have seen some that didn't, one way or another." He arguably didn't seem like he could do much of anything, but seeing his Urshifu jump in has been reassuring still.

"I just ... I just don't know why we gotta be involved in these battles at all. But I suppose human is fucking up," she sighs under her breath. Whatever gods they use to battle, she has no doubt they've written an invitation first. And now she also finds herself there, in a way.

The name doesn't ring a bell indeed, but her eyes brighten up with recognition and she nods, "If there's ever an opportunity, I'd like to. He really saved lives out there." Physically and mentally. She notices then that he looks at her own, with Jon meeting his gaze directly and maybe with a bit of curiosity. "Actually not ... whatever this cloning was, I don't think it affected them in a way ... I just wonder what's with the clones," she replies, then points at the Trubbish in her arms, the Comfey floating nearby and the Emolga flying nearby, keeping an eye on both Cass and the Weavile nearby. "These three where around." Her Cufant is walking leisurely with a bit of distance to the Weavile, and is also now carrying Cass' bag with the Silcoon attached to it.

Navy’s shadow breaks off and makes a quiet beeline for somewhere far away. Hattori is always around, always listening, and he knows where the other Pokemon in Navy’s inner circle tend to hang out. Sensing what his Lord would wish, the small Greninja goes to find the Urshifu.[break][break]
Meanwhile, Navy takes to a knee and smiles at Cass’s Pokemon. So many of his contemporaries forget them, forget their agency, forget how they exist as more than tools for war. He regards them fondly, smiling and saying a quiet prayer that they will never have to know battle again.[break][break]
“You’re all very brave. Thanks for keepin’ your trainer safe.” His hand balls into a soft fist and thumps against his chest, a warrior’s salute. Some might say they’re not much to look at, but they survived hell, and that makes them mighty. [break][break]
“We’ll probably see ‘em again eventually. That’s just how things work around here. I hope they’re happy, and that they’re keeping those Megalopolins safe.” Those same Megalopolins that would happily feast upon their flesh. For now, so long as they stick to their own, Navy has no quarrel with them.[break][break]

Cass doesn't notice the Greninja or his departure at all. She is focused on Navy then who does a surprising gesture - she regards her pokémon companions (and pokémon in general) higher than anyone else, but it's not a sentiment she finds mirrored too often. Saude is, as often, the first one to return to the salute likewise, with Jon following almost immediately. She chuckles faintly as the Emolga's cheeks seem to sparkle slightly with excitement about this acknowledgement - and couldn't help but be a bit sorrowful. Effie (her Fletchinder) and him are her, perhaps, most serious duo. She'd like if they could goof around more, but appreciates their steady presence nonetheless ... She pushes that thought aside as she pets Jon and Martin also, who floats a bit more flustered than the other two.

"Thanks, that ... that means a lot to me, and them."

Cass lets a moment of quiet pass, before the topic shifts to the cloned pokémon - toxic chained, all of them, but perhaps, with the origin gone ... it would be fine. "I hope so, too. I ... don't regret my choice, but I hope the Megalopolans won't make any stupid decision, either," she sighs. It would be nice if being naive and righteous would be easier when paranoia seeps into her system like poison. The thought of poison makes her try to cover her hands, skin scarred with purple stains, with her sleeves some more. "But I think ... the pokémon are going to do a good job being companions. At least I know that," she adds, patting her Trubbish once more with a faint fond smile.

At Navy's remark about hidden connections to the Three-Day-War, she lets out a short laugh, but considering everything ... it probably wouldn't be too strange, either. "Actually, for once, not. Allowed myself to be put to safety there, so I didn't really know much about what happened with the Megalopolans before ... I read up on it." But even as she's focused part of her studies on Megalopolans after the kidnapping, it still feels quite distant.

Hidden draconids, secret Megalopolins, princes and princesses, these are interesting times indeed. And Cass? Eris? Hideo? Even himself, though he is separated from the others by a gulf of time and experience? Simply normal folk cast adrift in these tumultuous waters.[break][break]
“Maybe I shouldn’t say this, but I worry about people your age a lot, especially given everything that’s going on.” Given everything that’s happened, he thinks Cass is entitled to candor. “Hideo, Eris, Thea Naito, and you were all there at the prison. None of you guys deserved to be caught up in that. That’s part of why I became a gym leader. My brother, he’d be a little older than you, died when Sootopolis first got taken over by Rocket. It – it ain’t right, for your generation to have to deal with mine’s messes.”[break][break]
He looks to her Pokemon again, and what a fine group they are. Sweet, serious, all of them loyal to Cass. Each of them vulnerable, as Gabe’s Gyarados and his own Skarmory were.[break][break]
“If you wanna train or anything, I’m always happy to help. Just for self-defense, you know.”

Cass laughs at Navy's words, a short snort that still lightens her heart a little bit. "Well, if there's one, maybe I'll let you know." But for now, everything legendary-related that has happened to her has been a surprise, one that she still isn't entirely sure how to deal with. Something she'll figure out - eventually.

Navy's next words make her halt for a moment. A thoughtful expression is on her face as she looks at him while he's talking, then out onto the sea. It's ... it's honestly odd to have someone apologising to her in this manner. Maybe, there's always been an expectation in her, one way or another, to have to fix things. A deeply rooted lack of trust for adults to do what they're supposed to, or perhaps an innate desire to do things herself.

Still, hearing Navy's apology is ... she is quiet still as she continues walking from that moment of pause, letting her thoughts move along her feet again. And a loss, carved in blood as she wonders how she'd be if any of her siblings ... "I'm sorry to hear that and ..." Still, thoughts linger without being actual words that she could speak. "I appreciate your words, I really do. It's ... it's nice hearing that." She smiles faintly as she also wrangles with having simply accepted this as a fact.

People that will experience the world for a shorter period than her deciding everything. People that might not even live to see their consequences.

She thinks back to Cyllora.

And then her mind wanders to Azelf, and the Lake Trio as a whole. All picked "companions" (if one could call Cass, Eris and Hideo that) much younger than usual.

"I would really appreciate that, actually," she then replies readily to the offer of help with training - seeing as she might find the resolve to intertwine herself with fates, she needs every bit of power she can get. Looking at her pokémon, she does think they still have a long way to go in part, and maybe she subtlely cradles Jon a bit tighter, but ... it'll work out.

“I’m hoping, when the war dies down, to try and work with Freya and the rest of the council to integrate some kind of self-defense battling course into school curriculum.” Though, given how much he butts heads with them on every other issue, he wonders how they’ll take to that idea. “But don’t let me talk your ear off about politics. Shuwen crests the hill where sand meets grass. Walking down towards the shore, he plods a meticulous course. Though it’s been a few months since their daring prison escape, he still hasn’t fully recovered. Navy’s been happy to let him sit out many of the region’s battles. Every warrior deserves his rest, and Dewford needs its armor. The burned bear limps to Cass and gives her a stoic nod.[break][break]
“Oh, hey Shuwen. Fancy meeting you here.” Navy waves his hand between Cass and Shuwen. “Remember Cass?” Another nod. “He’s really bad at expressing himself, but he’s glad you’re alright. This guy and I are really in sync when it comes to what we’re thinking.”[break][break]
