After the beating Walking Wake gave them, his sygna suit needs some time in the lab for repairs. Once more, deprived of a dragon’s soul, he is wholly himself.[break][break]
Rangers passing by the breakroom give the men queer looks. They whisper among themselves. Having just taken down a mighty foe, Navy is willing to overlook them. The company’s good, and he has it on good authority some of the rangers at the base know how to cook. Arceus is in heaven, the Elite Four is fully staffed for the first time in months, all is as it should be.[break][break]
“You’re a natural, man.” Navy grins, carefree, like it’s all fun and games. He’s forgotten, as he so often does, his own words. This isn’t a game. Their lives are at stake. To think you are invincible is to invite disaster, but damn if it doesn’t feel like the League is invincible right now.[break][break]
“Hell, give it a few years of steady training, maybe you’ll knock Silph out of his spot.” There’s a hint of heat at the mention of MATIAS SILPH, everburning low hatred steeping the waters of Navy’s ire. “Guess we’d have to duke it out to see who’d get to be the fighting guy.”[break][break]
Another drink. He wipes foam from his beard and looks to Eddie.[break][break]
“So how d’you feel ‘bout your first battle, soldier boy?”

Without doubt or second thoughts, Navy takes Montgomery down into the heart of darkness. They reach the bottom of a cave. By human rules, human logic, and human sense, this should be the end of the structure. A rift howls like a black hole at the far end of the chamber, inviting them to step beyond.[break][break]
“Freaky, huh?” Navy asks, lighting up a cigar. “And this isn’t even the end of it. Here, follow me.”[break][break]
Walking through the rift, they stand on the bottom of a sea. Sand is kicked up by every step. Clean air fills their lungs, even as water presses against their face. Omnipresent is a pressure on the chest, like they’re diving without proper gear. Navy’s sygna suit takes on the golden sheen of ancient myrmidons, protecting him from the worst of it, but hardly seems enough.[break][break]
His eyes tilt up. Far above them, angels rest like stars in the sky above. Nihilego watch them, weary of a foe they have come to know well in the past year. None draw close. Both sides know there is little to gain from a skirmish here, especially if the sheriff is simply patrolling with a new deputy.[break][break]
“Rangers are supposed to patrol down here, too.” He observes. “But there’s not many willing to come down here.” Despite everything, he manages a pained smile. “You couldn’t come up with something this crazy in a Virbank studio.”

Roland is no stranger to dancing. Swordplay, in the robot’s estimation, has vast overlap. When a partner takes the lead, he knows how to step back. Venus looks beautiful taking center stage, and who is he to stop a beautiful woman from taking the lead? A Gardevoir in the throes of its mega evolution is a frightening thing, its heart spilling out of its chest and bleeding raw power everywhere. Better to stay out of its way, energize the field.[break][break]
Koraidon’s eyes droop, helped along by the blast from the crystals. Drooping turns to slumber, its head slumping forward. Roland and Navy both wonder what the simulated king dreams about. What tales does the mind of a sleeping king hold? From how he thrashes, the dreams turn intense. They are wholly consumed by Venus, and Roland is thankful that is not him.[break][break]
Their show draws to a close too soon, as many battles often do. Taking advantage of the sleeping dragon, their own legendary monster raises it up and lowers it with a sickening crack. Navy wonders if it even knows it’s dead, or if it is lost in devoured nightmares forever.[break][break]
“Quick and brutal,” the sheriff says, “like most fights are. That could’ve gone real bad real quick.”

Some part of him prays it is a quest to find some very, very potent caffeine. That’s been his lifeblood, the past few weeks. His tank’s almost empty. “A full Elite Four and a champion. Now? My best—the top champion’s gone. Melody’s up top, just Connors and me running around doin’ two men’s work each.” Some part of him wants to ask Gwyar if he’d take one of the empty spots then and there, like he has that authority.[break][break]
“You…ever dealt with something like this?” Navy knows, by logical deduction, he has. There has been at least one great storm in Gwyar’s long life, probably more. To ask directly is to once more invite himself to remember that Kyle is dead, and that all the busywork in the world will not bring him back.

Memories of a fallen Gallade flood the iron warrior’s mind, remembering how timid the sight of a mega evolved Gardevoir once made him. There is no place for tenderness or juvenile shyness on the battlefield.[break][break]
Their great winged king dons the fighting master’s crown. Tera energy gathers around him, coalescing into a coiled fist atop his great feathered plumage. That will be his downfall. With his free hand, Navy takes out his own tera orb. Energy gathers, a rainbow of color circling the orb. This is a trick he seldom gets to play.[break][break]
Roland springs into action, dozens of worlds reflected in his eyes. He flies forward, expecting Venus to have his back. Koraidon meets Koraidon, both of the kings set on a collision course with one another. Roland’s tera blast attacks the dragon’s back, acting out the ancient feud between dragon and warrior.[break][break]
“Let’s kick this guy’s ass and get outta here.”

The appearance of a Hisuin Typhlosion is noticed, noted, and filed away for later. Each of them has a task to do right now. To focus on unnecessary details when they fight to survive is to invite doom upon their heads. Navy leads the supermassive Duraludon on a merry chase. Metal spikes chase after Dragonslayer and Voyager. The blade deftly parries the incoming damage with its king’s shield, but some damage inevitably gets through.[break][break]
It’s something you see on television when you watch the Galar circuit. Few things can protect a Pokemon from a Dynamaxed creature’s wrath. To battle with giants is to incur a cost. Dragonslayer seems to be enduring it with grace, not letting the chips show yet.[break][break]
“Good idea!” He shouts when the flash cannon catches their supermassive opponent in its eyes, somewhere far in the firmament above them. Blinded, its next max strike instead breaks a few connecting platforms, debris raining harmlessly to the floor below them.[break][break]
“Good instincts, Liu.” Its barrier is breaking, piece by piece. “A few more good hits and we’ll be able to attack its body.”

His sun crashes into the dragon, a headlong attack that sacrifices safety for promised victory. Blue blasts against red in a brilliant spray of color. Were Navy a more romantic man, he would regard this sight like the birth of a new galaxy. Instead, he simply ducks beneath his platform. His eyes are shielded from the shock. Three of the four combatants all collide as one, bringing the battle to an explosive head.[break][break]
“Smaug! Get in there!” His barked order carries across the cavern, a command heard by all. Smaug takes flight from where he roosts, spreading his wings and joining the fun. They are all precisely where this dragon wants them to be. An orb glows bright in Navy’s hand.[break][break]
With a pitcher’s aim, he throws the tera orb right at his dragon. An earthen crown sits atop the dragon’s head. With a sun burning overhead and that crown on his head, Smaug feels unstoppable. He puts the final nail in Sol’s coffin. This earthquake is fury that splits the earth. The ground beneath Sol, Sumire, and Ajisai opens, threatening to swallow them all into the abyss below.[break][break]
“Pretty tough spot to be in when none of your Pokemon can fly, huh Baki?”

“Surprised you haven’t swung by sooner, man. What’s Goode got you doing these days?” His smile frays at the edge, trying to make jovial conversation like a lifelong friend didn’t pass beyond the veil just last month.
