Not when Hoenn’s gym leaders are the key to defending its cities. “If you ask me, Hoenn’s got a few standouts, but we promote lots of the ones with real talent up. Our Elite Four’s a revolving door these days, what with-”[break][break]
What with the war. What with my best friend, the old champion, dying a suitably heroic death. Unspoken words. It still hurts, remembering that kyle lopez is gone.[break][break]
“Everything. I’ll say we’ve got the best Elite Four in the world. Even without our legendaries, Melody, Greyson, Matias, and me could take on any other region’s elites by ourselves.” Were they living in peaceful times, Navy would love to put that to the test.[break][break]
Somewhere along the way, an Iron Valiant begins hovering behind Navy like he’s an afterimage. Roland, for that is the iron warrior’s name, is alert. What others might dismiss at nerves, cold machine logic renders back as caution.[break][break]

That is not the only fun fight they will have. Something in the sea comes for them. A grand, noble beast made of light rises from the depths and roars. Warrior instincts take a moment to process but Roland has no such delays. A devastating hyper beam is held at bay by a moonblast while Navy shouts.[break][break]

It’s just a simple road. In another world, a world where all is as it should be, this route is just a footnote on a champion’s path to glory. Autumn’s first chill coats the route, and with it comes strange mist. Folk on both sides ready for round two. Sootopolis, Petalburg, and Mosseep were naught but preambles to a greater battle.[break][break]
Oldale lies beyond the horizon. Beyond that town waits glory. All it takes is for momentum to build and Rocket’s red tide will sweep across the whole region. A knight stands in the center of the road, sword facing downward and pierced into the ground.[break][break]
“Shred.” Speaks the knight, backed by a one-armed Iron Valiant. He sounds tired, worn, like a sword on the precipice of rust. “Arceus. Look what this region’s done to us.” There’s no joy in his smile, not even an echo of the emotion. They are here, cast as enemies. It feels like a lifetime ago when they clashed in a Slateport arena to satisfy their own egos and urge to fight.[break][break]
“Petalburg’s back that way, man.” An olive branch is offered, though Navy knows Shred won’t take it. Some part of it hopes he won’t, since he’s down 1-2 after Sootopolis.

A storm of sand and swords gathers along this unassuming patch of grass, near an unassuming little base. When the Rider’s eyes spot priam conrad, he has an idea of what his Gabite is going to do next. Were he a Rocket assassin, he’d conjure up a sandstorm. There are females in Vortigern’s brood who are far quieter within a sandstorm than any creature has a right to be. They approach their prey unseen and take their throats out before they even know they’re dead.[break][break]
“You’ll be watchin’ the future of the region develop in a jail cell!” Navy shouts the words at Priam, calling out to his iron warrior. “Roland! Catch!” Ascalon flies through the air, guided by magnetic force until it lands in the tall Iron Valiant’s hand. Roland’s old sword falls to the ground unattended.[break][break]
The night slash scrapes along where Roland’s left arm would be, were it still there. It tears into his torso chassis, a wound rendered nonfatal by its user turning to behold the Malamar. Were he just Roland, were he any other Iron Valiant, he would crumple beneath the wound and the pressure of an attack from multiple directions.[break][break]
Not here, not him, not now. He is Roland. In his hand be Ascalon, sword of heroes and promised victory. With this sword in hand, he beholds a hundred thousand other worlds. In them, he is a creature of flesh. He battles for ionized ideals. He battles for truths blazing within blue fires. He battles in feylight and beneath rolling seas.[break][break]
A stellar crown revolves atop his head, a line running from blade to the crown. In one fluid motion, he flicks a tera blast aimed through Malamar, meant to take down the Dustox that means to bind his liege lord and the spectral steed beneath him. Their efforts do bear fruit, for both rider and horse are too busy trying to pull themselves free and see within the sandstorm to perform a counterattack themselves.

“She was a weapon long ‘fore either one of us was born.” He’d seen the end of Zaria’s long road just before their fates were inexorably bound. She was old, then. Missing an arm, struggling to breathe, and still fighting. “It was her choice, just so you know. That way we don’t end this on a sour note.”[break]
More and more, the sheriff’s shade begins to fade. The mist hovering around her room begins to disperse. Tiny flies towards the window, ready to take to the sky once more and explore this strange new place.[break][break]
“Take care of yourself, Andrea. I know things are tough right now, but I’ll be in touch as much as I can be.” He thinks it cold comfort, given what she’s lost, but it’s all he can offer. With those few words, the sheriff is gone, a phantom in faded mist. Tiny glows once more, chirps, and leaves a luminescent trail of feathery stars in his wake.

“Well, he sure picked the right time to be alive if he’s a historian.” He thinks of howard slayte, though his friend is an archaeologist. Someone like him will look on these times in the far future, uncover their artifacts, and gawk at these strange times where gods walk among mankind.[break][break]
“I’ve got an eighth grade education and even I know we’re livin’ through some stuff historians’ll be debating for decades.” And there’ll be so many arguments about who was right and who was wrong. The victor will declare themselves correct, but historians will lay bare the truth of that claim.[break][break]
“I don’t usually tell people this, but I was a boxer when I was younger. Most of Galar’s gym leaders seem t’be martial artists. Lemme tell you, a good right hook’ll get you a lot farther than a high kick.” Bold words from Hoenn’s fighting master, ones he’d never say to the region’s martial artists.[break][break]
“But the real sport over there’s Pokemon battling. Best gym leaders in the world, Galar.”

As the sheriff turns his head to face the voice, his face is a study in severity and surprise. Upon truly taking in the sight of the fisherman, severity is replaced by mirth. There is something absurd about the image. His father was a man of the sea, yet he did not advertise it to the man as this one does.[break][break]
How absurd they must both look, here in these draconian tunnels buried beneath 104 – a wraith and a fisherman. Navy fights down a smile, trying to afford this severe, well-built stranger the respect he is due. He’s older than most, and he holds that pokeball like it means business. Navy relaxes, making sure that the man sees his own hand is nowhere near his pokeballs. There’s a seventh beneath his tattered poncho, but there’s no need for that one either.[break][break]
They’re just two men out of their element, lost in a tunnel, having a civil chat.[break][break]
“’Fraid I can’t. Work. You know how it goes.” His eyes nod down at the pokeball. “You don’t gotta hold onto that if you don’t want. We’re both a bit too old to fight just ‘cause we locked eyes.” [break][break]
A quiet humorless laugh follows his words. That was his brother’s way. It used to annoy everyone he’d meet when Navy took him across the region. Back then, battle seemed more a sport than a grim reality.[break][break]
“You finding lots of fish down here, man?”

“You’re not gonna die, Bryan.” His voice softens even more. Standing up, he reaches into his tattered poncho and walks over to where Rocket’s beast is chained. From beneath the poncho comes a handkerchief. Navy does what he can. It’s not much, but he can at least help Bryan preserve his dignity.[break][break]
“Come on, man. Give me somethin’, anything to work with. You work with me and I promise you on my brother’s grave I won’t let ‘em kill you. You’ll be in jail, but you’ll be alive.” It’s all the solace he can offer. So long as there’s life, so long as there’s light, there’s a chance. Surely someone who was called Lifebringer will understand that, even if his idea of creation necessitates destruction.

“Nothing. There’s no record of Calyrex or the heroes. Remiel could probably trace their history, but it don’t seem like it’d get us anywhere.” Not with so much else at stake. Not with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. Calyrex, Zacian, and Zamazenta are here. That is enough.
“You’re a bigger man than most people, Paxton.” Navy nods in acknowledgement. If he had a cup of mead, he’d raise it in Paxton’s honor. Power is a vexing thing. Men kill for it, many die for a taste. To turn away from that, to know one’s limits, is an honorable thing.[break][break]
“Some…part of me wanted to get a blessing and kill Silph after Kyle died.” The admission carries with it no small amount of shame. They’re on the same side, and he didn’t act on that impulse. “Arceus. He killed my best friend. Almost killed the woman I love. Glad I didn’t. Wouldn’t have brought Kyle back. Would’ve just made Rocket dance and brag about how we were killing ourselves with infighting.”[break][break]
Another question, for he finds Paxton’s thoughts enjoyable. If he’d fallen in with Paxton and Gunner Graves back in his street rat days instead of drinking himself into a stupor after Meteno, how different might his life have been?[break][break]
“You think all these living legends are gonna stick around after the war’s done? Feels like a whole lotta people are gonna need counseling when their gods go back to sleep.”

Thank Arceus for Lam. Thinks the sheriff as he crosses his arms. He’s all smiles, even if he wants the badge just as bad as Tsubaki. King and Baki both need to learn this lesson. Better he’s the one teachin’ it than priam conrad and his Gabite.[break][break]

King’s hands are razor sharp, leaking with poison. Though the Nidoking wavers after that hefty hit, he’s still standing. Roland is wholly consumed by the supermassive wave of sludge. He is taken down into the abyss, every gear clogged, every motor straining. Her terastallization makes her mighty, but there’s one flaw.[break][break]
Stellar light. So long as a spark remains, the light wins. Victory for darkness is a zero sum game. Victory for the light is survival. Roland’s sword glows in the dark, a streak of rainbow light that explodes from him in a prismatic blast of energy and color. His tera blast strikes at Manju, fierce enough to kill. This blade has slain many angels, but it stops just short of the beast’s heart and the girl sitting in its core.[break][break]
The battle is over. Roland stops, waiting for the words he knows will come.[break][break]
“And that’s pretty damn valorous of you, Baki.” He presses a switch and all the lights turn on and once, bathing the whole arena in a glow. This place will be hers soon, her battlefield to paint as she sees fit.[break][break]
