When ollie morales speaks on Lam’s role in the battle against Groudon, Navy’s eyes are vacant. He was deep in Area Zero when Kyle Lopez died, too far away to make a difference. His best friend died, and he was not there to help. He’s thankful Lam was there, especially if he saved Ollie and Melody’s lives. Burying one friend was hard enough. Burying Ollie and Melody would have crushed him.[break][break]
He rights himself by the time Greyson Connors and Isaac Merlo finish saying their piece. Clearing his throat, he adds one remark to the room amidst the noise he’s sure will follow on this and many other subjects.[break][break]
“There’s only one problem I see with Lam, Josh, and Gwyar: they’re all gym leaders in important cities. This war’ll come to Mauville and Lilycove soon enough. It’s not like they’ll have to leave their cities if they get promoted, but gym leaders are powerful symbols, too.” It’s why he lined up a successor for himself before handing off Dewford’s gym. “Just something to think over. “Got himself killed, just like a whole bunch of other folks did.” He lets the quiet sit between them. “This is the warrior’s road. It hurts. No real reward for walking it. If you want out, I won’t think less of you.” And he won’t. He’ll tell himself it’s a job well done, that one taste of war was enough to make Genny recognize she’s selfish and wants a happy life.[break][break]
“…but this war’s gonna end one day. I’m scared ‘bout what the League’s gonna do when it ends.” They stand united against a common enemy, as united as the League will ever be. What of tomorrow, when there is no great enemy? No Rocket or Dark Triad? “If you decide you wanna keep goin’, I’m gonna need your help. You’d make a fine Elite Four or Head Ranger, if you ask me.” Positions he cannot simply give her, though he has a few ideas on how to open doors.

War was no longer a gathering storm but a very real part of their lives. Goodhearted soldiers and grunts in over their heads alike will bear scars from that battle for the rest of their lives.[break][break]
“Calyrex’s evil twin got me good.” Zacian turns, narrowing her eyes at his turn of phrase. “What? What would you call him, C—Zacian?” The word sounds off on his tongue, unnatural even. He forces the word out, knowing that the myth of Zacian outweighs the truth of Zaria. She turns back to Terrakion, tilting her head up as if beckoning the blade to rise.[break][break]
“I’ve been out for so long. I’ll probably be out for a while yet. Guess it ain’t all bad. I can project pretty much anywhere I’ve been, or…” A nod up to one of the trees. A baby Skarmory has made his nest there. His wings glow with the same gentle light as Ascalon.[break][break]
“Wherever Tiny or his siblings are. No rest for the wicked, or so they say.” His attention turns to Terrakion, friend of his friend. “You’re hangin’ out with Eddie now? You’ve really got an eye for talent.”[break][break]
“So, Eddie, tell me what happened in Petalburg. Sounds…rough. ‘Specially if Noah got hospitalized.”

“I thought about it.” The words come before he can think them through. His Infernape follows along behind the Falinks, looking to their boss and then up at the debris. His solution to most problems is to punch them. When the ground proves hard for the soldiers to navigate, Wukong punches open a path for them. [break][break]
“Back right before Team Rocket’s first attack on Slateport. Pack up, go to Galar, have a go as an athlete there. Would’ve been hard, but my kid brother would’ve had fun.” He lies to himself, knowing in his heart of hearts that Gabe would have returned to Hoenn in a heartbeat if it looked like kyle lopez needed his help. “I just like my home region too much. So, your dad’s a gardener? What’s he grow? Berries? Flowers?” A simple enough question. The man must be successful to send Vespa to a school like hers.

Navy remembers an easy breath that makes the hair on the back of his neck stand up. Having survived a few typhoons in his life, he is intimately familiar with that last moment, the last heartbeat, before chaos erupts. The Rider’s eyes tilt up, hear screams, and chaos reigns.[break][break]
Thunderbolts cave in his chest. The earth rises up to take him, a sand tomb to spell the end of Hoenn’s first knight. Even the wind turns upon him, threatening to consume the Rider, poison him, corrode his very blood. Each of these wounds should kill. “Like the wind.” He urges Valkyrie, who disappears alongside her Rider with phantom force. His next breath is taken in the shadowy world in-between the land of the living and the borders. “A piteous display.” He says in an older man’s voice, resolved to fight this battle. Before he was even fully back in the world of the living, his hand was on a pokeball. There is no panache to his throw, no style. Style is for battle pitches and roaring crowds. He slams his pokeball into the ground beneath him like he’s smashing a tankard and demanding another round of mead.[break][break]
Roland, one-armed Iron Valiant, one of his strongest Pokemon, makes himself known. A storm of weapons fly all around him, cast about on the wind by Valkyrie. His horse plays the part of a poltergeist, covering the Iron Valiant as energy gathers along his blade’s edge. Fae energy gathers along Roland’s sword, unleashed in a spirit break upon ameena abadi’s Malamar.
