Dewford isn’t properly defended. Not while he’s here. Not while Zacian’s here. One of them must remain on Dewford per their agreement, yet neither shirks in the face of duty. Were Rocket to attack, it would be a repeat of Regice’s rampage.[break][break]
A little whiskey helps. Not much, not enough to get drunk. It takes the edge off. Zacian, or Zaria as she was once named before her seed of heroism took, made him swear off tobacco. She makes allowances for alcohol, especially on occasions like this, and he is happy to take full advantage.[break][break]
He looks at his phone. Melody’s number is still there, still on speed dial. He realizes, with some embarrassment, that her photo is still one from when they were together. Embarrassment mingles with shame at the realization of how little time has had to give to this woman who bears the weight of the world.[break][break]

He deletes a miss you and hits send. Maybe she will come. He hopes she will. Melody is entitled to meet Zacian, who she sacrificed greatly for, even if the songstress does not remember the sacrifice.

Of course she was up. [break][break]

These hours of the night were the only times her mind could wander. She had been dealing with it better thanks to annalise henderson's advice in the mechanical kingdom. She was combing her hair, her ritual she refused to stop when she started. However, the one person able to stop that ritual had contacted her. [break][break]

She looks at her phone, her thumb hesitating and moving side to side to either ignore the message or respond. She decides to respond, her heart was still soft and she still cared for him deeply. She sighs cause now she has to fucking tie her hair up and go but navy was worth it. She slips on her slippers and both meloetta and melody grab onto gardevoir as she teleports. She knocks on his door and awaits him to open the door.

That was quick he thinks as he rises from his chair, moving to the door and seeing it is, in fact, Melody. Meloetta is with her, and he offers the little songstress, who seems to be Melody wrought in miniature, a warm smile.[break][break]
“Glad you could make it.” He smiles at her, the most genuine smile he’s given in a long while. Behind him, in the center of the room, resting in the boxing ring that where his Elite Four matches were fought, sits a great wolf. She opens an eye, sees who Navy speaks with, and rises at once. Zacian is too large to simply walk up and join them, but she makes her presence known all the same with a short howl.[break][break]
“Don’t think you’ve met Zacian. She wanted to meet you at least once, before everything gets crazy.” Before they march off to war, perhaps never to return. Before everything changes, as things change constantly in this war-torn region. “You want somethin’ to drink? I didn’t expend most of my chamber budget on a fully stocked bar for nothin’.” Turning, he goes to the bar and pours himself some mead.

She enters the chamber, his personal man cave. [break][break]

it was very him.[break][break]

she couldn't tell if it was her mind playing tricks on her or not but it even smelled like him, it smelled like home. "Of course b- navy!" she says as she manages to stop herself she hoped he didn't notice but she knew he would, attempting to redirect the chance to respond with a quick hug. [break][break]

The wolf across the room demands her attention as it gives a small howl and melody releases the hug as she looks towards the source of the noise. Melody's starry eyes light up in excitement as she quickly approaches the fuzzy beast. "Oh wow! She's such a cutie! What's her na-?" she says as she pauses as if a wave of clarity washes over her. [break][break]

During the pause, Navy mentions her name to the woman. "Zacian huh? Aren't you just a majestic thing? Take care of him for me wont you?" she says as Melody realizes something after the fact, why did it feel so familiar to her? Had she seen it before? She shakes the thought away as navy offers her a drink. [break][break]

"You remember what I like right?" she says as she was sure he'd remember she liked wine and anything else that was just as sweet as he was.

Zacian’s eyes take in the sight of Melody. They behold Hoenn’s top champion with sadness, Navy ever lingering on the peripheral edge of her vision. These two loved once, and it was true love. She can offer no words, not like this. All she can do is lean down, close her eyes, and nuzzle her great cyan face against Melody. She’s warm, this great hero, and her fur is softer than a mane so scarred has any right to be.[break][break]
Navy missed her voice, and he missed being close to her. That the old hero can tell even without noticing how tight he clings to her for the hug, brief though it was. She returns to where she sits, eyes flitting up towards the television screen. Some up and coming trainer from Galar is battling Motostoke’s gym leader. Little does this trainer know that his country’s hero watches his battle.[break][break]
“Lucky for you that Goode let me splurge on my budget for the booze.” He puts on a bartender’s smile, moving to grab her some wine. It seems odd, drinking the night before a battle. With a shrug, he pops the cork and pours history into a glass for her.[break][break]
“This was bottled the year one of Galar’s best champs first grabbed the title.” What he’d give to have met Gwyar Wledig and his wife in another life, to clash with them in simpler times for the glory of victory before a roaring crowd.[break][break]
“You ever wonder what life would’ve been like if we’d been born there? Both of us probably gym leaders, fighting for the title every year.” It’s a good thought, and he pours himself some wine while he imagines them both bathed in the lights and the cheers.

she nods her head to him as a thank you before she takes a sip of it. "It's good. I like it." However he then poses a very interesting hypothetical for her. What if they had been battling for gym leader in galar? [break][break]

"You really like that place don't you? Galar." she says as she wonders if that was due to how many years they had spent together in that dream. [break][break]

"Maybe, I don't know if I would've to be honest. We would probably be to completely different people in that case." she tells him in earnest, "Maybe we could've just been normal ol gym leaders instead of people who fight in a war." [break][break]

"Well, I'd still probably want to be a famous artist." she jests as she takes a sip of her wine "What would you want to be if you grew up outside of hoenn? A sheriff still?"

“Mmmm…” He had been something in Galar once. He’d been a lord, a high lord, with a seat at Queen Livy and King Morales’s table during times of strife. They had been good days, but he promised to put that past behind him. Zacian looks at him with great interest.[break][break]
“An architect. Maybe a civil engineer if I could force myself through the classes.” Regret is steeped in his voice. A man’s thirties are a queer place for him to start over, especially with a soul as old as his. “It’d be nice to build somethin’ like Wyndon’s bridges, or its clock tower, or even its stadium. Another sip of wine. There’s a hint of vanilla beneath the grapes. Navy’s never had much of a taste for the stuff, but they honored the old Galarian champion well with this vintage.[break][break]
“When the war’s over, think I wanna do that. Hang my new sword up and give it a go. Build instead of just destroy.” He looks up, looks at her, wondering what he’ll see there. “You think you’ll stay the champ once we’ve got room to breathe?”

"No you wouldn't" she laughs and snorts a bit "You said it yourself, you'd have to force yourself through the classes."[break][break]

"You care too much for people, in any universe, you always want to defend others who can't defend themselves." she says as that was something she had admired and loved as a part of navy. To be strong so that others didn't have to be, even if she didn't agree with it. She valued a position that was different from her own [break][break]

"I think to really be able to do something like that you need to be obsessed with it in every aspect, it needs to be something that excites you. Like me and music" it was something the harmonious felt in her soul even if it was her mom who pushed her onto this journey. [break][break]

"I always wanted to be in this position, ever since I was a kiddo. To let go of it would be something I'd have to be forced or coerced into leaving." she admits as Melody knew herself, she was too hungry, greedy, she wanted to have it all for herself. She takes a sip of her wine and lets that statement hang in the air for a bit. [break][break]

"Probably stay here till death makes me part with it. I hope you stay as elite 4, I need someone reliable with me."

That pride is soon washed away as navy squeezes her hand and she feels like a school girl all of a sudden again at his touch. but as he talks about how rocket is gonna have a hard time making her look bad she frowns. [break][break]
