Navy is just a few steps behind Tsubaki. Zacian stands there, solemn. Her eyes fall upon Tsubaki and make no secret of the hero’s shock. All Zacian can do is step forward, dip her head, and press it against Tsubaki. Her fur is warm, thick, smooth as silk. Its surface is broken by scars. Even now, Zaria that was cannot escape her scars.[break][break]

Among the verdant green of route 102 are gray scars. Each serves as a reminder of a dark time when a meteor barreled down upon Hoenn. Had the worse come to pass, they wouldn’t have done much good. A meteor of that size wouldn’t just crush the region, it would have destroyed human and pokemon alike across the world within a few short years.[break][break]
Arceus, that’s rough. Thinks a phantom as he surveys one such bunker. As time passes, he finds it easier to solidify his astral form. Staying in one place seems easier, especially when he has links to another world and this one. He rides Valkyrie across this plain as he did the poisoned fields of Galar. He is Hoenn’s pale rider as much as he was Galar’s, surveying this landscape for hidden bases.[break][break]
“That’s another marked.” Says the rider, circling the spot on his map. He little suspects that there are blades hiding in the dark, waiting to strike. Giving Valkyrie a gentle nudge in her side, he spurs her on towards where he thinks another base might be. There’ll be time for him to explore the bases he’s found later. For now, he’s sticking to the plan he’s drummed up. Scouting. Nothing more.

Tiny, a Skarmory young enough to suit his name, lands on Navy’s shoulder and chirps at Vespa, wings glowing in excitement at the prospect of making a new friend.[break][break]
“I’m glad your family’s alright.” He turns, moving to walk down the street and continue his survey. There’s more rubble, more displaced Pokemon, more problems that only multiply the farther he walks. “They gonna stay in the region, Vespa? Seems like plenty of people are leavin’ now that everything’s getting serious.”

She gives him another piece of this puzzle. It’s turned over in his head, a three-dimensional problem examined from all angles. Turning over the facts in his mind, there’s only one conclusion he can reach. All around them, the mist starts to swirl. For as much strength as he has, as much power as others claim he has, the sheriff is but a novice at powers that no outside force can help him improve. Their time grows short, but he will make the most of what remains.[break][break]
“So for all you know, the Dark Triad recruited you in Hisui. Maybe you get sent here with a mission. Maybe you’re…”[break][break]
She could be anything. Anyone. Yuina Higashi, such as that identity is, could be so much dust in the wind, a cover for something far more insidious. Perhaps the person she was before was a monster. Who she was before does not matter to Navy. Even at his coldest, he would not begrudge a person for their past. It informs the present, but Yuina’s future is her own to make.[break][break]
So, he arrives at the question. He thinks it might well be the most important question of her life. It’s the question that will decide where he goes from here.[break][break]
“Just tell me this: are you happy being Yuina Higashi? Is this who you want to be?”

They have not yet fallen to bickering or infighting, not really. Navy’s heard the stories from Kyle. Human nature is a hell of a thing, and clashes between big egos trapped within one room are inevitable. It’s about limitation rather than overt prevention. So far, they’re on point. It’s a tenuous peace, he thinks, but a peace he’ll take for now.[break][break]
His mind swims with old footage of Ulysses Monroe, dressed in his tailor-made black suit. The symbol of Hoenn’s Pokemon League was pinned to his chest. He had a nice smile in that old footage. Hell, Articuno could, since he wants the League to win this war.”

Dewford Island curves upward the farther inland one goes. A small mountain sits at the center of the island. Shrines to the old god of this land, Tapu Koko, dot the landscape. In olden times, the tribe that called this land home offered reverent prayers to that old god. In recent days, many of those shrines find themselves shrouded in mist.[break][break]
Off the beaten path, somewhere along the path to the mountaintop, is a quiet weald. The forested mountain’s terrain is more rugged than Galar, but it serves all the same. Deeper and deeper the sword and the soldier venture, til at last they find themselves beside a pool.[break][break]
It is quiet, this place. Only the sound of a waterfall and the quiet hum of mist disturb the silence hanging over the weald. Resting on the edge of a pool is a familiar body. Navy sleeps, still as the dead. A staunched wound in his stomach knits inch by inch, his sword close at hand.[break][break]
Watching over him rests Zacian, hero of many battles, she who was called Zaria and Cyan and mother and friend in a time so ancient that the names Navidson, Hisakawa, and Terrakion had not yet been conceived. Her golden eyes sit in a patch of pitch black fur, affecting the image of a visor. Just off to the side is her own sword, a mirror of Navy’s. Ascalon, sword of heroes, a promise of victory, rests until it is needed once more.[break][break]
She stands, looking down at Terrakion and bowing her head in respect. Every age needs its heroes. It is a heavy burden, to take up the sword in defense of man or mon. Her eyes shift from Terrakion to Eddie, possessed of a gentle heart. A soft woo calls a spirit here from far away.[break][break]
“She likes you, man.” Says the Warrior, a doppleganger of the man sleeping in the water. Navy rests at the water’s edge, surprised to see Terrakion here. “Is…Noah…?” His smile fades. In its place is fear, worry that the war has taken another brave soul too soon.

How very alike, they both are. Only as she speaks of this place, hints at her adventures, does he come to appreciate their similarities. She pines for a Sinnoh of long ago. He pines for Galar as it was three thousand years ago, just before and after its darkest hour. Neither of them can return. They are trapped here, in the present, in this waste land of reality where distant, dark figures smile upon them and play dangerous games with their lives.[break][break]
Navy closes his eyes and seems to fall asleep. He focuses his mind, remembers his own dream from long ago. He remembers wearing a Gabite’s skin and walking across unfamiliar land. The world was wilder in those days, free. Pure and untainted by mankind’s ideals was that old land.[break][break]
It was cold – cold enough to make that dragon burrow under a mountain, rest against the warmth hidden closer to the core of the planet. Her words ring true.[break][break]

“The point of a prison’s to rehabilitate people, Montgomery.” A point lost somewhere along the way, one more checkmark on a laundry list of ways people get crushed under the heel of proper, ideal civilization. “Not to treat ‘em like they’re evil. Not to tell ‘em they’re damned for all time. You punish ‘em. You get their victims justice, but you want ‘em to be better.”[break][break]
Not much longer now. He’ll be gone soon – back to rest, back to Zaria, who slumbers in the Weald with him.[break][break]
“But you keep trying. You owe it to them. You owe it to the people they’ve wronged. The only justice in the world’s the justice mankind makes for itself.”[break][break]
The last syllable leaves his lips and he disappears, dispersing like so much empty air.

Somewhere along the way, the two ghosts were separated. This land of the dead, covered in mist and floating rocks, seems designed by the hand of some distant creator to confuse the souls trapped within. kyle lopez’s voice calls to Gabriel Navidson, helps him find the way. He wonders if this is how Alpha and the others feel when confusion reigns and they hear that familiar, warm voice.[break][break]
“Kyle?!” He calls out, only to hear another voice call out. “Someone’s here.”[break][break]
And, like he always does, like he did to his detriment in some long-ago battlefield against Madeline McKenna, he charts his own course. Someone sounds frightened, and it is his nature to help those who need helping. Even death cannot change Gabe. Turning away from Kyle, he moves through the mist. A sharp whistle summons the ghost of a Gyarados, who blows it apart with a surprisingly gentle wind.[break][break]
Gabriel Navidson smiles at Yuina Higashi, though he does not know her name. He is young, too young to dwell in the land of the dead – perhaps two years younger than @epicbugcatcher. Gabe wears the same clothes he wore the day he died, the adventurous sort of outfit an up and coming trainer on Galar or Unova’s trainer circuits might wear, a medley of blues and reds topped with a cape. The right side of his face is an ugly reminder that battle is no game, gashed by the wound that killed him.[break][break]
“Yo. You’re still alive, right? Get separated from your friend?” A moment’s pause, no longer. “Kyle n’ I will help you.” There he goes again, volunteering Kyle for work.
