“It’s probably pirates.” The sheriff muses as he rides across the waves on his Kingdra’s back. Reports filtered into the sheriff’s department and the local ranger station about Pokemon acting erratic a few miles to the east of Dewford island. Lucky for Navy, the ranger station finds itself staffed by a very competent ranger.[break][break]
Beau Fontaine and him don’t get to get together as often as he’d like. Before Regice went on a rampage and displaced practically the entire island’s wildlife, they mostly just checked in with one another and stayed in their lanes. It’s been working, and he thanks Arceus for small miracles. Having a competent ranger on hand means Navy can handle the messy business of humans.[break][break]
“Pirates. Man. Hoenn’s crazy. Real modern day pirates. Wonder if they’re smuggling drugs like somethin’ out of an eighties movie.” Navy thinks after he says the words that he should treat this matter with the severity it’s due. If it were any other two duly charged servants of the League, they might be in serious trouble. Most criminals have at least one hardened Pokemon to their name, to say nothing of their guns and other weapons.[break][break]
Navy just feels like everything’s going to be alright. Beau and Eduardo Hisakawa both have that effect on Navy. It turns an otherwise boring task (potentially broken by a burst of action if he’s lucky) into a flight of fancy, an adventure.[break][break]
“How’ve you been, man? Eddie and you held your own damn fine, back in the prison.”

It was nice to get out, once in a while, and it was nice to be able to pretend - maybe for a minute, or two if he was lucky - that the world wasn't falling apart at its edges inward. Beau clung to his Gyarados as it cut sinuously through the water alongside the sheriff's Kingdra, and even his excitement at something resembling a lower-stakes investigation was distressingly dulled at the mention of probable human instigation.

After months of dealing with the same, and the tensions between Rocket and, well, the rest of Hoenn coming to a head, Beau had come to the conclusion that people sucked.

"Pirates?" he echoed, raising his eyebrows. "Huh, maybe. Think they have the cool soundtracks to go with?" Not the most likely scenario, surely, but he could dream. It would make fixing their mess just a little more enjoyable.

At Navy's next question, he gave a rueful grin and a quick thumbs-up, moving to grab back onto the Gyarados before the water-type's shifting coils managed to unseat him. "Hangin' in there!" he called back. "The prison was wild as all get-out, brah, but we made it through, him an' me!"

A proud - and maybe wistful? - grin stretched across his features as he recalled the events of the penitentiary. "Wouldn't in a milion years say I'd want to go through it again, but we got each other outta there just like we said we would. Still, gimme like a hijacked cruise or something next time, y'know?"

He looked over to Navy with a little laugh, canting his head curiously. "What about you? Stuff's gettin' nasty out there, and I keep hearin' it's only gonna get worse. You think?"

“Think our government and Rocket are just ‘bout done teasing each other, man.” As always, the sheriff is a master of irreverence and understatement in equal measure. “It’s probably gonna be war. Only good thing ‘bout it is that I don’t think Walsh and his cronies are gonna come after Dewford. At least not at first.”[break][break]
Woe be upon him if he’s wrong. This town is his responsibility, and he takes that responsibility seriously. The subject matter rouses wrinkles in his forehead, signs of weariness and distortion-imposed early middle age catching up with him.[break][break]
“Gotta admit, I’m a little worried ‘bout what’ll happen when everyone gets the call. Rocket knows just how to take advantage of us. Poke holes in our defenses.” The conversation grows too grim for his liking. So, after a pause, he changes the subject.[break][break]
“We’re definitely kicking some ass to a movie soundtrack if it’s pirates, whether they like it or not. Maybe an old school Paldean western. Yeah. That’d be groovy…”[break][break]
Leviathan snorts, trying to draw their attention to a cove the sheriff’s eyes would have overlooked. The Kingdra spouts water towards a dark spot along the back of the crescent-shaped inlet. As Navy draws closer, he squints, and sees…[break][break]
“Does that look like a cave to you?”

Beau's brow furrowed as he listened to the other man waxing toward the grim realities of what likely awaited them, then abruptly switched gears to what kind of soundtrack they'd be accompanied by as they worked their way across a hidden embankment of pirates. Should he say something? Could he?

It seemed to him that disregarding the rumblings on the horizon would just make them less prepared when it did strike, but then again - if he did nothing but fret and worry and work himself into a froth over it, what benefit would he gain?

Maybe the lighter approach had its merit, at least for a little while.

He squinted and steered his pokemon to one side as they skirted around a cluster of rock, nodding as they surfed closer to the narrow opening. "Yeah, you know this area as well as I do, if not better," he grinned, chancing a look toward the other man. "Some of 'em are just erosion, but some of 'em can go deeper than they look."

He dismounted the Gyarados and ducked into the low mouth of the cave, uttering a low whistle that echoed deeply before bouncing back. Looked like it was one of the latter, in this case.

“Mhm.” A modest nod is given at Beau’s praise. Far be it from him to turn down praise like that from a man who would be Dewford’s ranger captain before the year was out. “I’ll be right behind you.”[break][break]
Like Beau, Navy ducks low. Leviathan is recalled, his part of the day’s work done until they find out what’s further inside. His eyes adjust to the darkness, though it doesn’t take much. With sunlight coming streaming in from above, they see…[break][break]
…and are seen. Several men look at them, momentarily surprised. They look like Deerling in headlights, but the moment passes. It is replaced by frantic activity, men going for their pokeballs and scrambling to get a few speedboats ready.[break][break]
“Gentlemen!” Navy grins, hand on an ultra ball. “You’re all gonna have to come down to the station with Mr. Fontaine and me. Answer some questions ‘bout all that fun stuff you’ve probably got in those boats. Easy way or the hard way, boys?”[break][break]
They’re already sending out some Pokemon that pass for heavy hitters. Two Machoke are running towards Dewford’s finest at a full sprint. Behind them is a dark Palafin skipping across the water, a regular supervillain if Navy’s ever seen one.[break][break]
“Hard way it is.” He smiles at Beau right before unleashing Shuwen. Navy’s Urshifu rushes forward, headband blowing dramatically, and catches one of the Machoke with a flurry of surging strikes.[break][break]
“Ora!” Shouts the bear.
