matias was, for all intents and purposes, jailed in his own property. internet access might be there, but he doubts that matias is the type of person who can actually spend hours in front of a monitor.

kyle turns to his ranch, where his other pokemon reside. he's seen how he treats them, but makes no effort to comment about it. forcing ideals shared by their swords of justice on matias will just bring the opposite result.

"you can't really do the same rambles with your other pokemon either."

he whips back to matias.

"it's easier to start getting used to it with a dog. what do you say?"

arriving at their destination brings kyle to a delicate space to maneuver around.

desolate as it was, the scrapyard still provides a bountiful exposition for the scene. narration doesn't need to explain anything to explain the story for the setting.

"alright, let's see what i have to work with..."

he studies the options he has. the simplest solution often is the best, and overthinking not only hurts his head, but also burns through his time.

kyle opts to pick for a weapon to shield his way through, using it in a manner that wasn't intended, but more or less kept its function. sunsteel strike.

as the weapon made out of this sci-fi alloy provide a good defense against debris, kyle decides to lean more into the fantasy aspect of the story and activates a move that he bases with the flavor more than the practical usage.

springtide storm. a radar based out of a move that operated with winds of love and hate sets out to search the area with anything that may radiate with it. it doesn't need to make scientific sense, kyle thinks, since this was just a story.

matias' preference for the champion was obvious with his every action.

"the worst feeling is being directly responsible for the death of a loved one, don't you agree?"

a longing sigh escapes him.

hands rest on his hips as he faintly shakes his head at the thought. impishness was replaced with fondness as he stares down the ground at the same way zev looked back at the horizon.

"you're awfully attached to me. wouldn't killing me result to a similar end for you?"

the forms that zev sees weren't actually around until recently. their volume increases with time as ho-oh's avatar stays in one place. for now, they appear as natural, but the time ticks away regardless.

"there's a reason why i let myself die to matias' hands of all people."

there's sharpness in his expression, akin to him being playful with someone he's comfortable to be around with. a raised brow and a sly smirk mars the gentle features of the dead.

kyle shouldn't know this, but circumstances has led him to read the devourer more easily than what a person who has only met him a handful of times hsould.

"you aren't actually a masochist, are you?"

kyle smiles, ignorant of the supposed taunts from the drk triad's words.

"ah, thanks." it was nice being given a heads up. "let us know if we can help."

it seemed like a minor interlude for kyle, who longed for an actual action-adventure genre in his life as opposed to the usual hub world-style game centered around side quests and boss raids, that he just wanted to get things over with. with melody and matias, he only feels the need to be defensive if the other two did so first.

the situation shapes up for him to actually stop being complacent. forcing him to face reality that their chase for keldeo has to take a pause to deal with what was in front of them.

"oi, this isn't what we need right now."

he turns to quanto, but the chef disappears, having left them with his parting gift.

kyle clicks his tongue. terrakion squares up his counterpart, but is quickly pulled away by kyle's words when he asks the two other people with him for their approach.

"are we just brute forcing this fight or what?"

with their work done, kyle defaults to his original priorities, which was self-indulgence. they already did the work needed so anything needed from them has been forgotten.

his main worry shows with the rest of their supplies.

"rations! we lost all our rations so we can't even even take our time going back to the actual entry point."

they can always get back with his solgaleo, but going back this early meant being given another assignment so quick due to toxic work culture that awards efficient employees with more work.

like most of kyle's ideas, everything he suggests, bar the ones for missions required for his job, appear to be random passing thoughts that come out of his mouth unfiltered.

he already brought his growlithe though, signifying that the thought has evolved into something more.

"i mean something that isn't entirely for battling but--"

kyle leans down and picks up the dog, dangling the growlithe in front of matias while its tail wags, ignorant of the fact that the man in front of him has killed pokemon for mere points during conflicts with rocket.

"--something like a pet."

kyle so easily waves off the issue like it wasn't important. apathy comes with its advantages, and his nonchalant approach on things pushes him to move forward without the burden of worry.

thanking the server that delivers him his drink, he turns back to gabe.

"do you think i should go back?" he asks. "i want a personal answer, not the kind of response you give to look righteous in front of your crush."

he always urged him to be carefree despite his good nature. the boy was the epitome of a wannabe hero that it makes kyle sick, but he's grown on him, like every other shithead in his life.

kyle props his head up against the surface of the table as he stares into gabe's eyes, forcing him to awkwardness until he gives an answer he'll be satisfied with.

the border was unexplainable, even for other spirits who have been here longer than the portal to this dimension existed. abstract concepts were easier to accept as concrete ones. it made zev's explanation hold just as much merit as any other interpretations one can surmise.

"but that's the thing. you can't."

this was the domain's bread and butter. illusions are more likely to appear than visions. there's nothing to prove whether one is real or not, especially when fiction and reality had already started melding together as well in the real world.

it only gets better since it wouldn't be out of character for kyle to remain neutral, neither swaying the other's opinion to coincide with his nor outright lying about it.

"would you even believe it if i said i wasn't? that's what a hallucination would say."

the days following a certain date at the beach, kyle would find matias on his home rather than elsewhere. perhaps it's the calm before the storm, but he finds his presence where he's supposed to be reassuring.

he comes in without warning, opening the door to let him and his dog in. matias most likely already knows of his presence the moment he set foot in his ranch anyways.

"hello. you look good."

the short greeting seems cordial enough to mask the true nature of his visit, which was to be matias' warden during his time under league's orders to be under supervision.

"i'm surprised you're content with just sitting around now."

this was what he'd been trying to do with the other silph cups held from before. he's content to be in the middle of things, and more so when he sits perfectly at the middle of the race's placements.

while he would have normally apologized to , or reacted to any other happenings to the race, he figures it's better to concentrate more on not falling from his wailord's back, especially with the coming obstacle

"here it goes."

there's no need to instruct the wailord. what needed to be done was obvious, albeit tricky. the large pokemon splashes from the water as it attempts to maneuver into the landing area, with kyle praying for best results.

days before the fateful events of mt. chimney, kyle finds himself with terrakion.

while the pokemon has found itself paired with kyle, it neither has the same connection with his patron, nor did it have a similar understanding of what kyle has in mind. they knew each other, but the connection of a legend with its avatar cannot be replicated easily.

the sword of justice visits them on their backyard, away from where most of his dog pokemon frolic. the two share a talk before the champion turns to his household and shouts.

"noah!" he calls. "can you come here for a moment?"

kyle isn't sure what he was doing right now, but given that it's a day off, he's probably washing the dogs or something.
