Whatever lies or she told him, she didn’t know any better. To her, they were facts. She had gotten one out of three correct—but did it really matter when they had been truths to her forever?

Maybe to him.

He showed no amusement, so her smile waned as she grabbed the pin. She was still unsure how she was supposed to act.

His response caught her off guard and she gave a hiccup of laughter before she began rolling out the dough.

She had nothing more to say about herself.

Surely he had plenty of other uses for it—even other people who worked for him, maybe. How many people worked for Black? She had no idea.

Did he want her to stay there? She noted the will, rather than would, as though it were already agreed upon.

She was fine living in her apartment. It bordered on luxurious, both in location and interior. Good money came for the sacrifice of genuine companionship. Swimming in cash, all alone—but she’d been raised to thrive in such emptiness.

He meant to take her under his wing, now, twice over. Independence had been a new concept only a few years ago, with the disappearance of her father. It had never been taught. It was uncomfortable.

When Gabriel Black had entered her life, it had been a very short time until she’d felt utterly dependent on him. There was no hope of leaving such a lifestyle, only because it had not occurred to her at all.

She latched on further.

“Okay. Yeah. Thanks, Gabe.”
