Melody had recently sent a formal challenge request to alexei to take on his gym challenge! However for once she didn't choose the traditional challenge, she instead opted for the obstacle course in the sky! It seemed like too much fun for her to pass up on so she signed up with her trusted noivern, airpod! She and airpod were some really good pals as she used him in a lot of her gym challenges during the rock theme. [break][break]

She walked up to the gym's lobby and presented her I.D to the attendant who immediately recognized melody and led her to where she was meant to go.

He was already outside, waiting.

And boy, the skies above the arena today were full of—obstacles. Similar to some of those games he would occasionally play whenever he had free time; while some of them were inspired by the insanity he’d seen (and personally experienced) via the recently-concluded tourney.

“Hey, Melody,” he remarked, waiting for her arrival. His Salamence was also waiting for her, busy poking at something under a wing. “So, clearly… no thanks to the tourney… this happened.”

He gestured at the obstacles set up in the air around the Sanctuary proper.

“Reminds me of that sky battle I had with John Sullivan, only without the crazy fans all around. Thanks for coming out to help me test this as another alternate non-traditional option.”

Of course, the infamous ‘Circus Charlie’ flaming rings were there, somewhere, being held aloft by some of the other staffers’ flying Pokémon.

“You ready to ride?”

"Fire rings huh?" she said looking up at the sky and sweating visibly.. it was obvious she was a bit anxious before this performance, unlike her other ones this one wasn't completely safe. She had to trust in her Pokémon, that...that was something she could do! It was her whole gym theme...but fire and long hair isn't a really good combo. [break][break]

"Of-Of course Alexei! It's...it's safe right?" she asked hesitantly as she released her Noivern to her side "This is Airpod, I've had him for quite some time so I hope your impressed with our flying skills!" she said with a bit more pep in her voice.

At the question if the entire thing was safe, he then gestured.

“There’s an entire safety net rig set up underneath,” he pointed out; and true enough there was a safety system set up underneath the aerial obstacles. “It’s not like the tournament—that was literally ‘hang on for your fucking life’ and hope you finish the entire thing in one piece.”

He then chuckled at the memory of the obstacle courses he’d encountered previously.

Seeing the Noivern made him grin, before the Salamence looked up once he was done with poking at his wings.

“If you’re concerned about the flaming rings—I suggest tying up your hair before we get to that part. And no, they’re not sizeist as Doug claimed them to be,” he added.

He then hobbled over to where his Salamence waited, before getting on Gabriel’s back.

“Let’s go!”

Before Alexei was even talking about her hair she was already tying her hair up into a bun and looking at him like 'huh'? [break][break]

"John did this too? Oh god he's pretty crazy...but then again so am I for even signing up." she said putting her finger on her chin while looking up into the air as she stared at the rings. She was going have to think of a way to make themselves fit through that hole.. "Well I'm ready whenever you are Alexei." she says as she was visibly nervous as she climbed onto her Noivern's back and patted his back "We got this, we got this, we got this.." she repeated to airpod and herself over and over a bunch.

“Clarification—we did this at the tourney. It was… lack of a better word, fucked up.”

Now that the Salamence was waiting for the Noivern to catch to them at the ‘starting line’, there was another airborne avian flying not too far away from them—one of the staffers who had a Fearow served as the starting point.

“Moment this pistol goes off, fly exactly once through the entire obstacle course and get back here as fast as you can—in one piece, we good?” they drawled, and Alexei smirked.

“I’m good when she is,” he replied with a smirk, snapping down his flight goggles because he knew this was going to get real crazy, real fast.

Once the other had given their agreement, the loud crack of the starting pistol would go off—and at the same time, all of the aerial obstacles would come to life.

First of them being the battering ram. Several of them, in fact. How they were hanging mid-air without support was a ‘mystery’, but Alexei knew that there were even more staffers, just flying out of sight, causing the ‘rams’ to swing around like punching bags possessed.

“Try not to get hit!” he called as he soared forward; barely avoiding getting hit by the first of many. And boy it was a rather lengthy section of the obstacle course, too.

She simply nodded at him as she was a bit more nervous for this than usual. You'd think she'd be more scared of standing in front of massive crowd's but no, there were only a few things melody fears in this world. She's afraid of failure the most of all, she knew the consequences of it. [break][break]

Before taking off noivern nudged her in a comforting manner, he had faith in her so she needed to have faith in him. She slapped her face to wake herself up and keep her in the present moment. "You're right airpod, we got this." she said growing a bit more confidant. [break][break]

Before she even knew it, Alexei had taken off and the two followed behind him. They got to the first obstacle, battering rams...simple enough right? She sized em up and the rhythm they were going..wait rhythm?! EASY melody just had to find the right timing for it, she began to hum a song that lined up with the rams before suddenly shouting "NOW!" at noivern who was already feeling her energy as they rode together. [break][break]

It was going well at first! Melody's sense for rhythm really helped with the timing, however a little bit of disorganization in the timing made one of the rams move out sync with the others. She flinched but Noivern had it covered as he used his thin body to wiggle over it just in the nick of time. She let out a small sigh of relief, that was too close for comfort.

He very nearly got unseated by one of the ‘rams’ a few moments earlier; however he knew they weren’t out of danger yet.

“Geez, guys!” he said with a chuckle, before the ear piece he had in erupted with a raucous, tinny laughter as up above, the other staffers were causing the ‘rams’ to fly every which way.

“Looks like your challenger has rhythm, what do you think we should do?”

“Well, what do you think?” he replied with a chuckle as the Salamence did a barrel roll to avoid getting slammed in the face by one that was swinging like a gigantic pendulum gone wrong.

“Alright, we get you! But don’t say we didn’t warn you!”

Laughing as the Salamence’s trajectory righted itself, the swinging of the rams only increased in intensity—like the easy rhythm from earlier had picked up speed, becoming more and more erratic the further they flew through.

He wondered where Melody was right now.

Muting the ear piece for a few moments, he called out in her approximate direction, “Doing alright over there?” and very nearly getting sideswiped by another ‘ram’ that caused the Salamence to let out a shriek of surprise and do another unrehearsed barrel roll.

Melody's rhythm carried her at first through the challenge like a breeze, until Alexei had seen that rhythm and threw it into a discord. The swings began to grow more and more erratic, making it harder for Noivern to navigate and snake his way around it. He was already really testing Melody's riding skills. [break][break]

She heard Alexei, he was somewhere within earshot and Melody tried to respond. "Oh ya know! Hanging in-" she said as melody suddenly pulled Noivern to the left to delay their speed a bit and miss a ram that was coming in quickly. "Hanging in there!" She said with a small sweat forming on her brow. [break][break]

However as the rams became more erratic Melody realized she couldn't keep using her sense of rhythm to dodge it all, after all in a real air battle like this it wont always follow a tempo.. "Alright Noivern! Let's keep it up! You're doing great!" she said patting him as he purred, to her touch. He really liked being complimented. They continued to move through the track, barely dodging and weaving the rams, however this time Melody's handling got a bit better. She managed to use his thin body to glide and slither around the rams rather than try to dodge it completely. "That's it Airpod! Ride the wind!" as she complimented him, this form of riding was a bit more dangerous but if Noivern was more comfortable like this then so be it!

Two unrehearsed barrel rolls later, one final swinging battering ram very nearly knocked him off the Salamence’s back; however he’d managed to clear the first obstacle.

However he knew that the other was a ‘master of music’, and was probably expecting to see her out of the first obstacle. Thankfully the infamous ‘Circus Charlie’-inspired rings weren’t up yet; however this next obstacle was literally—

“Guys. Really?” he chuckled over the ear piece, seeing that there was a rather thick throng of ropes and cables stretched across the next section.

“What? You said ‘go all out’ and that’s what we did!”

“Where the hell even did you get all these—you know what, never mind!”

“I hope you’re ready to fight through this. It’s jokingly called the Cat’s Cradle, so be careful not to get too tangled!” he said once the other had caught up to where he was waiting; before flying straight into the aerial tangle of ropes and cables that had been strung out.

Not to mention it was a pretty lengthy section, too.

And going all out they certainly did! Melody was in quite the pickle so to say that Alexei was making work for this badge was an understatement. However the adrenaline rush she was feeling from all of this was quite amazing, yet the feeling was short lived as she saw that the next trap was one she had no idea how to even really get past. [break][break]

She saw that her next obstacle was one where she had to navigate her way through some ropes that were being held up by his gym trainers. "Oh god, how are we going to get past that Airpod?" she asked as the noivern chirped back at her confused on what to do himself, this was one strange obstacle. She could try to do what she did with the swinging logs in a certain sense, but there was no rhythm involved, they had to snake their way through? Thankfully noivern had some reptile in him but...unless. "Time to get creative! Noivern! We're putting your infiltrator to use! corkscrew your body and try to make it through some of the cat's cradle with boom burst!" she called out and he nodded. [break][break]

Noivern dashed forward, spinning around while he unleashed a blast of air making a thin barrier of sound and wind. It worked at first, the first couple of strings somewhat moving away from Melody and Noivern, however there were just too many of them and some got stuck on noivern's body. [break][break]

"Damn it, Noivern keep calm! We can think our way out of this!" she ordered as she was still trying to recover from the spinning as she got a real serious case of the dizzies, grabbing onto noivern tighter as she recovered.

Her choice of Noivern was a smart one; considering that Infiltrator was ~~mostly~~ very situational when it came to practical applications; and seeing as how thick the layers of cables and ropes had been strung up, well—

It didn’t take too long for her to get stuck—and quite honestly, Alexei was also reaching a point where he had to physically use his arms and hands to shove the cables out of the way—they did prove to ensnare and entangle quite well for both of them.

Damn, his crew really did know how to go all-out when it came to this particular challenge. Spared no expense, indeed.

“Gabe, don’t incinerate the ropes!” he said as the Salamence had gotten tangled up as well—maybe having that large wing span was a bit of a disadvantage after all. “Ugh!”

He then attempted to force his way through the snare, it was like fighting through a forest of brambles and thorns.

She had looked over to Alexei to see how he was handling the ropes tangling up his Pokémon and got an idea. She wrapped her thighs a bit more tightly around Noivern. "Just hold on for a second Noivern! I'll get you out of here!" she said not even fathoming that she could remove the ropes herself. [break][break]

She struggled at first with it but then noivern also started to help her with it. Instead of flying through the ropes he climbed through them, snaking his way through some and allowing melody to move thick ones out of his way. Melody and him eventually managed to make their way out of it and she cheered. "Noivern! Yes! We did it! Thanks for the tip Alexei!" she said giving him a wink since she had only figured it out by watching him and salamence. [break][break]

She then zoomed over to the next obstacle course wondering what exactly it was going to be. It was going to be the most difficult among them all so far. She gave him a quick scratched behind his ears, his favorite spot. "We're gonna rock this one together right?" she said as Noivern let out a boisterous blast of sound as if it was it's roar.

The Salamence was almost at the end of his patience, however a sudden sharp whistle from Alexei warned the draconid to calm down.

“Gabe, I swear if you set the entire thing on fire, you’re not going to hear the end of this,” he warned the draconid, before eventually finding an opening wide enough for them to power through, never mind if they had to engage in more shoving shenanigans.

By the time they emerge, Alexei’s cheeks had taken on a rosy pink hue, before taking a turn and then pointing at the next obstacle—the infamous flaming rings.

Oh, boy.

“Try not to get roasted!” he said as he took the lead, flying through the first few rings that were stationary—for now.

The next few rings were actually swinging around, which made timing the forward movement trickier. Adding to the fact was that a strong wind began to pick up, which made the other rings swing even wilder than usual.
