While Alexei kept the camera trained on the Water-type, he couldn’t help but chuckle at Cherre’s antics as she continued to strut around with the shades perched over her eyes.
Both of them didn’t notice that their little display had drawn the attention of a curious Vulpix that had wandered into their clearing by accident. It wasn’t until Alexei saw that the Squirtle was no longer alone in the video did he realize that his PokéGear was vibrating again, alerting him that another one of the Pokémon he was looking for had walked right into their midst.
“Oh, hello,” he began softly in the Fire-type’s direction. The vulpine continued to watch the Squirtle curiously, until the Water-type turned around and noticed that they were no longer alone… and was about to attack the unexpected ‘intruder’ when he whistled loudly in Cherre’s direction.
“No, Cherre… don’t attack. I’d like to see how you’d win this one over without us having to resort to beating it into the dirt,” he continued, watching as the Squirtle pouted, before letting out an annoyed-sounding huff, before letting out a sigh. “Go on, interact with the Vulpix…” he urged, taking a few steps back so that the Water-type could do her thing.
While the Fire-type continued cleaning its fur like nothing had happened, the Squirtle wandered over and began to talk with the other. Seeing that they were busy, he then took the hint to leave them alone for a bit—to look for Berries, for anything that he could give the Squirtle to use to help get the Vulpix on their side without fighting.
Once the Water-type had gotten close enough to the Fire-type, the two began talking, talking, talking…
…until what felt like another eternity had passed, before the Water-type looked up and noticed that her human companion was no longer there—but there was a pile of Berries not too far from where they were. Gesturing over to the Berries, the Squirtle invited the Vulpix over, even picking out Berries for the other to sample and roast before eating.
Where was Alexei in all this?
Hidden beyond the clearing, watching the two getting more comfortable in each other’s company. As the two worked their way through the pile of Berries he’d left for them, he knew that even without having to fight, Cherre was capable of negotiating with other Pokémon. Once the two were full, the Squirtle caught notice of her companion, and gestured at the now-sleepy Vulpix, who’d curled up for a nap—pleased to have made a new friend.
Taking the cue, Alexei revealed himself from the undergrowth and dropped the second Safari Ball on the Vulpix’s sleeping form, watching as it was sucked into the beam of red light before it fell to the ground…
