he misses it. they were much simpler times. but they can only move forward, not back, so there's no point dwelling in the past.

perrserker takes a break from keeping watch and strolls over to uri, sitting by his feet. he reaches forward to give the cat's beard some good scratches.

"well, we're not going anywhere, so you have time to think about it."

For a moment, she watches him at his Perrserker, her gaze then drifting towards Hati. The Lycanroc of orange fur remains watching the nearby path, her ears perked up as if paying close attention to even the smallest of sounds around them. If she were to put a hand on her to pet her, Sol knows that Hati would be tense, because she had asked her to keep watch and so that’s what Hati will do without a question.

that's not to say she isn't cute now. the lycanroc is adorable, though he still favors cats, as evident by how his attention remains mostly on his purring perrserker.

magnus.

this is the first time he's heard the name. he assumes she means her brother, but he can't seem to recall ever seeing him in pictures or on base.

Of course, considering Sol had known exactly what she wanted her Lycanroc for and what kind of temperament she wanted it to have, she had been pretty picky about her choice. Nothing about training Hati had been easy, especially after evolving given the temperament for which Dusk Lycanroc are notorious, but Uri is right: she had been really cute.

The next question is difficult to answer, though.

Any particular memories of Magnus?

They didn’t really get along all the time. Like most siblings, they argued and even tried to ignore each other often, but there were also a lot of nice moments, and ultimately, she really misses him despite all the times when things weren't amazing between them.

As a result, when she responds, her voice is all too quiet:

”...My family moved around a lot when we were kids, and I really disliked it because I had a hard time making friends, but Magnus was always there for me when I felt lonely. I really miss that about him…”

Sorry is always what people say when they realize that she lost him; when they learn that there’s something Sol had that she no longer has. A part of her always wants to tell them to shut up, because they don’t really know that Magnus is gone for sure, and he could always come back…

maybe someday he'll be able to truly understand what it means to lose someone close to him. until then, he can only imagine and hope it never happens to him, as unrealistic as it is.

Maybe they really have grown closer than what she’s comfortable with, but on this night, as she gets comfortable and closes her eyes in order to go to sleep, Sol is more than fine with it.

It takes a lot for her to trust someone, and there’s still the tension that comes with sleeping at an unfamiliar place – somewhere unsafe – but the fact that she’s even capable of going to sleep perhaps says much more than what she’s willing to admit to herself.

the flame continues to flicker for a while, though it's not like he notices it. his gaze is elsewhere, focused on nothing in particular as he keeps watch, remaining mindful and awake.

somewhere along the night, he pulls a blanket out of his backpack and carefully drapes it over sol, making sure she's kept warm against the chill of the night.

eventually, his watch comes to an end, but he doesn't bother waking her up. he simply waits, letting her sleep for as long as she wants to.

it's not like he's sleepy, anyway.
