she had scheduled an appointment with the rustboro gym leader two weeks prior, though she had no intentions of battling the man. her reasons were far more personal in nature, the young woman having effectively utilized her position within the league to arrange such a meeting.

"hopefully he can figure out my little problem," she mumbled.

it had taken roughly several days to both reach and secure temporary accommodations for herself within the city of rustboro; and a good chunk of time had also been spent toward mapping out the sprawling city whilst locating a short route that connected her hotel with the gym. eventually, she had given up walking and simply pulled out her wallet to take advantage of the unsurprisingly efficient taxi system that the city had implemented ages ago.

"try not to get lost, eevee," cait cautioned, glancing down at her companion. "stay close to me, alright?"

with her eevee in tow, the young sergeant took her first few steps inside the gym.

cait's first few steps sounds an echo that bounces off the walls of the gym. it's not empty by any means, but it's not lavishly decorated either. it's humble, perhaps reflecting that of its leader.

no receptionist greets her; instead, rustboro's esteemed gym leader.

"miss alfric!" a smile encompasses the tone he wishes to set for their arranged meeting. "i was expecting you. welcome to the rustboro gym." he steps towards her and offers his hand. "alexander stone."

her eevee does not go unnoticed. it's cute; he appreciates it and even kneels to the ground after formalities with cait to pet it, should it be friendly enough to allow him to.

"how can i help you today?"

cait grasped the offered hand and gave it a firm shake, a shy smile tugging at the corners of her lips as she greeted the gym leader.

"it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, mister stone."

her eevee took advantage of the man's close proximity by pressing closer and taking in the stranger's scent. he'd soon lean into stone's touch as the man offered him a scratch, his tail whipping from side to side in a wag.

"well," she began, before clearing her throat. "i've recently come into ownership of a fighting-type. and since you're more than qualified to handle that particular breed of pokemon i thought you'd perhaps be interested in..."

she fell silent for a moment, considering how she'd word her proposal.

"i thought you could perhaps take them in? i honestly doubt it'd be happy with me."

cait fished out a pokeball from her purse before presenting it to the man.

"apparently it's a pokemon that originates from the alola region. a... passimian? are you familiar with them at all?"

"the pleasure is all mine," he says as he scratches the eevee by its lush mane. the wagging of its tail is a metaphorical green light that invites him to scratch the back of its ear. it makes him smile.

at the mention of a fighting-type, he rises back to his feet and perks an eyebrow. he waits until she finishes talking before inquiring.

"i am. they are often in large troops, which seems to have made people misconstrue their nature. they aren't rowdy at all, if anything, they're rather gentle."

he extends a hand out towards the pokeball. "may i?" he waits until she hands it to him. "i have a question for you, miss alfric, if you don't mind. why do you think it'd be unhappy with you?"

she hesitates briefly before gingerly depositing the minimized orb into the capable hands of the gym leader.

'it's for the best.'

"i didn't come across the passimian in the wild," she said. "he was confiscated from a deceased team rocket member."

it was an unpleasant story and she wasn't at all privy to all the details. but her superior had given her the only pokemon that had been found on the corpse's body with the hopes that she could give it a much better home.

"he's a healthy young male and large," she continued, gesturing to indicate the pokemon's superior height. "aggressive, too. he's tried to assert himself over the other males in my party several times over whilst tolerating the females - me included. overall, his temperament is difficult to manage."

cait released a mournful little sigh.

"he's not a bad pokemon. but i don't have the time nor the resources to cater to his needs and training. i'm... sorry for unloading this burden on you. but it didn't feel right just going to the nearest dojo and dumping him there."

she sucked in a breath, her words having left her in somewhat of a rush.

tragic, really.

"i see."

the minimized orb suddenly feels heavy in his hand as he hears of its origins. it's not the fact that the passimian used to belong to a rocket member that upset him, but it's because it lost its trainer. not all rocket are bad people; he refuses to believe that. there has to be some good hiding within all that's bad.

"i'm sorry to hear that," he says in response. she'd tried her best and there's not much else she can do for the pokemon. but with his resources and time, maybe he might be able to lend a helping hand.

he smiles. "you're a good person, miss alfric. and don't worry, i'll make sure to take good care of him, that i can promise you." he pockets the pokeball and moves the topic along.

"is there anything else you would like to discuss? a gym challenge, perhaps?"

she hesitated, briefly.

"yes, actually."

cait inwardly rehearsed how'd she go about saying the next few words she had in mind.

"i - "

the young woman resisted that urge to bite her lip.

"i've been assigned to mauville's gym," she informed. "as a leader."

cait hadn't expected that her application would have been accepted and it had taken a day's time to recover from the initial shock of it after receiving the news.

"i wanted to properly introduce myself to all of the leaders of hoenn because of it."

the hesitation in her voice only causes his curiosity to grow. her words pull him in and the payoff is adequate, earning a look of surprise as a reaction.

"oh," he says, tone light. "congratulations, miss alfric. i'm sure mauville is in capable hands."

even if it isn't, she'll be forced to adapt quick when the situation calls for it. mauville is one of hoenn's largest cities and arguably one of its most important, which puts a lot of pressure on the young gym leader. he only hopes that she'll be able to bear it.

but, he keeps his thoughts to himself.

"if you ever need help please don't hesitate to reach out." though generous, his offer carries another agenda. "have you met the others yet?"

she appeared to be thankful for his offer, her nervous expression soon giving way to a pleased one.

"thank you, mister stone! i most certainly will."

her future was bright and she felt she had been blessed by the gods themselves. cait was absolutely certain that the position of gym leader could prove itself to be beneficial to both herself and the region as a whole.

'mauville is a large city,' she thought. 'but i'll manage.'

the young woman refused to fail, after all, and had never once considered it to be an option.

"i've met NIKOLAI PETROV , but that was when i was barely even a cadet. i'll be informing him soon enough, i hope. but you're the first."

cait's grin brightened, considerably.

"how much time did you put aside for our meeting, mister stone? i'd love to take a look at your gym, if that's alright; and perhaps we could even have a small battle?"

she's met NIKOLAI PETROV, though that does not surprise him. the sootopolis leader is charming and open; he practically invites conversation ever since his recent change in demeanor a few months ago. alexander, while also charming, is more private which makes him harder to approach. however, it does surprise him that she chose him to inform first.

"what made you pick me first? pardon the question, i'm simply curious."

regardless of her answer, he'd accept her request to battle. he nods to show it. "enough time. and yes, that sounds lovely." with that, he gestures her over, past the main hallway, and into a large open space with a maze made out of hedges in the middle.

"gym challenges happen there, but we'll be having our battle on a separate ground, if that's okay."

"you're the first i managed to get a hold of, to be perfectly honest."

cait was a woman of protocol and offered anyone of a superior rank an ample amount of warning before showing up at their doorstep. emails had been sent and permission granted before she began to travel from one gym to another.

"i do appreciate the quick response, by the way," she continued.

she followed his lead, her gaze soon sweeping across the open space where they would soon indulge in battle. the young woman nodded her approval, appeased by the spaciousness.

"this is perfect. don't you think so, eevee?"

eevee stepped forward and tilted his head back, the normal-type noting the remnants of cleaning solutions that indicated that the area was more often than naught kept clean and free of clutter.

"would two on two be acceptable, mister stone?"

quick responses are expected from a man in his position but truth be told, it's not him who responds to inquiries. that is what having an assistant is for. regardless, he keeps the truth hidden and simply smiles at her comments.

"the rustboro gym challenge is traditionally a one on one, but since you aren't here for my badge, a two on two is acceptable, miss alfric."

he glances down at the eevee by her feet and ponders to himself for a moment. he's not sure how much battle it has seen or if it will even battle at all, but what worries him is that he doesn't have a pokemon with similar experience to it if it does battle.

"i hope you don't mind me using a different team."

he pulls out two pokeballs and calls out his florges and aromatisse. the presence of one of them, maybe both, is enough to cause a MISTY TERRAIN to form.

"you can have the first move."

cait eyed the fairies with a curious gleam in her eye, the sight of them making for an unexpected one.

'i wonder what i should use?'

she glanced down at her eevee, whom peered up at her in turn. after a moment spent mulling over her choices, she pluck two capsules from her belt. a lombre and a vaporeon emerged moments later, the creatures fully prepared to heed their mistress's instructions.

"just like we practiced."

her companions dipped their heads in acknowledgement before her lombre proceeded to do a little shimmy. dark clouds manifested high above their heads as rain dance was successfully executed, the gym's drainage system put to the test as a light drizzle descended.

"i hope you don't mind a little rain, mister stone," cait said, teasingly.

vaporeon released a water pulse a moment later, the attack's raw power intensified by the presence of the storm as it shot toward the delicately-built florges.

the MISTY TERRAIN lasts for so long before being overpowered by the sudden RAIN DANCE from the lombre. he smiles, blinking away droplets of water as they pour down from high above. the water-grass-type's little shimmy of a dance is comedic, though he's sure it isn't meant to be.

"the rain is a nice surprise."

and with that, the battle commences. her vaporeon releases a WATER PULSE that flies straight at florges, who without missing a beat, takes the attack full on. her flowers are used to less violent waters but the attack leaves here leaves soaked, which is oddly soothing.

unlike the lombre's dance from earlier, florges' is more elegant and controlled. her limbs move tenderly with grace and poise as she summons forth a PETAL DANCE. razor sharp leaves spread in the near vicinity before being sent towards the vaporeon. she'll be locked in this dance for a while but she'll at least look good doing it.

aromatisse plays the role of support and sends a HEAL PULSE over at florges, healing her up from the earlier attack.

"don't hold back, miss alfric!"

cait took his recommendation to heart and grinned widely at the sight of the florges's petal dance. the fresh-faced gym leader was very familiar with that particular attack, having utilized it herself multiple times over in the past. it was absurdly potent, but it came with its drawbacks in the form of confusion.

'we'll have to try to outlast it.'

additionally, her vaporeon was at a natural disadvantage, and was very much unlikely to withstand more than one or two direct hits from a full powered petal dance.

'they'll need to play defensively until it's over.'

sharp petals rushed toward the water-type and she released a noise akin to a screech as flowery barrage sent her toppling over. the wounds inflicted were considerable enough for her to have trouble when it came to the simple act of standing, but she still managed to do so.

"lom-bre!"

lombre hopped from one foot to another before promptly opening her maw, craning her neck, and blasting her comrade with a severely weakened hydro pump. the vaporeon stumbled in response to the pressurized water, but a portion of her wounds would close as it splashed against her pelt; her ability - water absorb - using the liquid as a makeshift 'healing potion'.

"aim for the aromatisse," cait coached.

her vaporeon heeded the command, hurriedly wielding a hydro pump against the plump fairy.
