He could only blink and watch in silence as the little scene of the high-school aged kids playing swirled around him, the laughter ringing in his ears as the figures moved around in a familiar dance, a maneuver he’d seen Vic do so many times—but not with him, never with him, always with the other members of the team. A sense of normalcy…It was one of the things he knew could never happen, but the ‘what if’ possibilities lingered around in the back of his mind—why did the pink gas…mist…this substance have to bring it to life? And especially where— This time, he was certain that he heard the bluenette’s voice as he felt a presence on his shoulder suddenly shake him out of his thoughts. “M—Mattie,” he breathed as he slowly turned around, making sure to maneuver on his left foot as he faced the other. He was—he had a suspicion the other had seen—everything. “Mattie. Matt,” he corrected himself. He would never call the other by the harsher form of his name, unless he was being absolutely serious about something. “You… you saw all of that, did you,” he began quietly as he composed himself, leaning heavily on the cane as he spoke. “You saw—something—that I always knew—would never be possible, because of what I carry. Of what I am.”Composing himself for a few moments, he soldiered on. “The thing is, if that ever happened. I would be a completely different person, you know?” he hummed. “It’s something I’ve long since accepted… that would never be. Because who knows if a multitude of parallel universes exist, then what would happen? What—what would you do if you met an alternate reality version of yourself?”He was afraid of what would happen if that situation ever happened to him—because his sickness, the one he’d kept tucked away for so long, that so few people knew about—had pretty much changed and defined him for who he was—at least during the earlier part of his life. Him running away to here, to Hoenn, was the start of everything new. That he could take his own life in his own hands—but at the same time, he still had to be careful, too. “I wouldn’t know what to do if I met my own doppelganger, honestly. From another time? From another reality? How different would they be—from the ‘me’ that you see in front of you right now. Hell, how different would you be, or would our paths have even crossed at all, if what you saw in the mist really happened…”He stopped for a few moments to compose himself. “But. To be honest, I’m fine with things as they are. This—this version, of me, the one who wants to be strong and to do a lot of things, but can only do so much because if I bleed, I might die. I was… I was afraid, you know. When I was attacked, back at the end of May.”He let the silence fall between them before he continued. “I was really afraid, that evening. That, what if, I died that night, what then? What would happen? Who would protect Fortree from the threats out there? From—from Rocket,” he whispered, his voice going so low it was almost deadly quiet. “Who would mourn me, if—if they succeeded in killing me. Had I died that night. It’s always bothered me, you know.”He didn’t know that the pink gas was reacting behind him once again, this time showing a quieter scene; one completely unbidden. Another one of the possibilities— Of him, in a possible future, coming home to roost in Fortree with— Someone. And that someone had blue hair, although he didn’t realize it just yet.The same someone he was talking to, right now. His eyes were locked onto Mattie’s as he tried to find his voice again. Holding up the hand with the purple-and-green feather, he wondered—would he be able to meet the owner of said feather once again, within the swirling mist? He had no idea. There was no reaction coming from the feather, after all. If he still had the strange mirror, then maybe he could try; but all he had now was the feathers. The same feathers that Tornadus had eschewed and left in his possession. “And besides, Mattie,” he finally managed to say after sinking into his own thoughts for some time, letting the quiet settle between them before plucking up the courage to continue, “I wouldn’t exchange this reality for any other. This one, the one with you in it—right here. Right now.”Us. Us two, he continued in the back of his mind as he felt his knees trembling and threatening to give way, but he steeled himself as he looked down and touched his forehead with the bluenette’s own. “You. Me. …Us.” OSHIT.@mattis
