As waves gently rocked the boat café, and musical lull drifted out from speakers hidden behind some plantation on the counter—an odd mix of different jazz and pop songs from across the ages and countries, the current one playing something from all the way back in the 80s—the aroma of coffee loftily drifting around the café, Rayne had as always during the weekdays, faithfully manned the counter, lightly tapping his foot against the wooden deck with the music, adorned in his usual attire for work.[break][break]

Just outside, along the walkway that connected Rayne's home and workplace to the harbour of Slateport, a quaint chalk sign pointing out the daily specials and new seasonal drink held steady on the stone of the harbour.[break][break]

As usual, his own pokémon lazing around with the slow, laidback nature of the quaint, warm café, not too popular that there were huge queues, but set with enough regulars by now that Rayne could keep up this comfortable pace as he pleased without any worry about money—though the café itself was more of a personal hobby rather than something he needed for his daily upkeep, something to idle away his time as he enjoyed the seas that reminded him of home. Of course, he'd try his best for it, nobody would want something that was half-arsed after all. Though with how meticulous he was with these photogenic, decadent drinks and dishes, it was doubtful anybody could consider his efforts half-arsed.[break][break]

With the chime of the bell that had signalled a new customer, Rayne smiled warmly, happily reciting a,[break][break]

Ever since he’d established his IG account, he’d had enough justification to spend his free time visiting all the little tasty nooks and crannies each city and town had to offer. Whether it was to chase that cute dessert selfie for his social media or simply to satisfy a craving, Mint didn’t need too much justification to hang out. The fall chill was here in full force, even wit has close as they were to the water. Perhaps that only made it worse? He’d never lived by the ocean so he couldn’t be too sure. Regardless, he still sighed in soft relief at the warmth of the café as he entered. [break][break]

The Sunshower Café had been on his list, having seen it a couple of times on his movements through Slateport Harbor. “Hello!” he greeted, hos eyes briefly passing over the waiter before glancing over at menu boards. “Can I start off with a…a Miltank Mix au Lait?” he said beginning to grin as he read over the extensive dessert menu. He tried not to over order and started out with his drink first. [break][break]

It smelled nice in here, and Mint took a moment to look over the décor. He hadn’t even been on a café that was attached to a boat. He wouldn’t think cruises counted. This felt kind of different to him. He noted the counter and the empty chairs, and sat himself down, getting comfortable as he took I the atmosphere. “It’s really cozy in here.” He added, snickering as he ‘warmed’ by the fire. It was really just a little projecting of a fireplace, he assumed for the holidays. Even so, its still far hotter inside than the windy outdoors. Thank the Gods.

Rayne smiled, "a Miltank Mix au Lait? Sure thing, give me just a minute... feel free to take a seat anywhere," he'd said fondly, his smile deepening when his blue-haired customer had opted for a spectator's seat at the counter. Rayne's own pokémon springing back to life at the clap of his hands, an Alolan Raichu chirping happily as it dashed behind the counter, fully in service mode after its small power nap.[break][break]

A brief moment later it had floated out with a glass of ice cold water, "Complementary! Just in case you're a little parched," Rayne explained with a smile, before turning away towards the coffee grinder, a crackling buzz echoing around the café, softer than the music as Rayne set up a Kalosian press, knocking the grinds into the press as he turned back towards the customer, though behind the steamer to boil the water and milk.[break][break]

Whilst traditional au lait didn't utilise steamed milk, instead opting for boiling it, Rayne had preferred steaming it instead, similar to his usual coffees, finding that it tasted and looked better with a bit of foam—such things, in his opinion, far more important than rusty traditions. Of course, steaming entailed less risk of burning, but Rayne wasn't that much of a goof that he'd burn the milk... at least not on the job.[break][break]

Pouring the boiling water into the press' container and allowing it to sit for a moment while he worked on heating the milk, Rayne smiled to the customer, "So, name's Rayne! Mind if I ask to what or who I owe the pleasure of meeting a new face today?" the raven-haired man asked curiously, momentarily turning back to bring the container and its press up front in between the two, fully in view for Mint to see. Pushing the press down to sink the grinds after letting them sit and extract into the water. Shortly after he'd poured the freshly brewed coffee into a pure white ceramic cup, filling halfway before pouring the frothy, steamy milk on top, decorating the sides of the plate the cup sat upon with some simple checkered cookies and passing it forward.[break][break]

Mint smiled watching the Alolan Raichu move behind the counter. He leaned forward a little bit to watch the pokemon float to and fro as it completed its job. He held back a squeal as the dual type brought him a glass of water before nodding over at the barista. “I was, thank you~” he took a couple of sips, not wanting to fill up on it with a late incoming. His eyes began to wander once again, watching the man work. He’s focused on the work at hand, so much so that it took him a minute to process he was being spoken to. “OH! Nice to meet you, Rayne. I’m Mint.” He said as he quickly stat up at attention. His eyes are drawn to the barista before eventually their way back to their work. [break][break]

“Well, over the summer I visited the docks for pokemon and I noticed this place…but it was closed.” He began. Mint smiled wide as Rayne moved his set up a little closer for him. He was quiet before picking up again, realizing he hadn’t finished his story. “A-anyway, I kind of forgot about the place until a week ago, but now I’m here.” He said with a small laugh. “I’ve never been on a café that lived on a boat. Do you reside here as well?” he asked before [break][break]

As he waited for his response, he looked over the drink, admiring the cookies on the side. Steam rose out of the cup and curled in soft tendrils above it. He blew on the cup softly letting the drink sit so it wouldn’t scald his tongue.

"Mint, huh?" what an interesting name! Rayne had smiled pleasantly, chuckling after seeing it had taken the young man in front of him a moment before he'd managed a response. He'd kept an ear out to listen as he began to clean up, clearing the steamers of any milk that may have gotten into the nozzle, cleaning it down with a wet rag, wiping down any stray coffee grinds and wringing out the rag before washing his hands to turn around and bring his full attention to his customer.[break][break]

"Oho? Perhaps that was during the Hoenn Star Tournament... I do remember getting practically dragged out of my café by the crowd..." he'd chuckled, imagining that Mint had meant during the day rather than when Rayne would usually close up.[break][break]

"Why yes I do, a small, humble abode! Just up on the floor above, and a quaint little garden above that where I grow some happy herbs~" he'd explained chipperly, "the rocking waves remind me quite a bit of home, so it's rather soothing and rustic for an old chap like me," he'd smiled, chuckling once more as he did. The Raichu's head had popped up from behind the counter, the surprise betrayed by its yellow spiralling ears announcing its presence before it had curiously tried to observe Mint. Though on the note of Rayne's living quarters, he'd opted to forgo mentioning just how overly colourful and wild the room itself was, much of his home just a place to store decorational furniture based on pokémon—his bed in particular being a giant Snorlax plush bed—he hadn't felt it necessary to overshare like that.

Mint eyed the stranger as he worked before finally dipping his gaze down. He picked up one of the checkered cookies offered with this and dunked it into the drink, swirling it around while blowing on it in an attempt to cool it down just enough so he wouldn’t blister up his tongue with a burn. It’s slow going but he’s excited to taste it. “Mmmm…maybe!” he agreed, willing to go with that explanation and not the fact that these docks were used often to dump corpses after attracted Sharpedos chum lines. “The tournament was so busy! I got one match in before I decided I just wanted to enjoy the souvenir shopping and watch.” He said with a small laugh. He hadn’t been too interested in battling back then but he was starting to think maybe he should’ve tried a little harder. If only for the experience. [break][break]

“Ah I see…so the herbs you use in your café’s dishes are all freshly produced upstairs?” he asked finally lifting the cup to his mouth and taking the daintiest of sips. He could still feel the heat radiating off the coffee, and it burned a little but not enough to make him flinch away or spill his drink. After a slow sip, he carefully set the cup down. He tried to savor the flavor past the heat. “I like it so far. Maybe I’m just too eager to drink it right now.” He said as he bit into his cookie. [break][break]

After swallowing he perked up, “Are you a Pacifidlog native then? I’m not from here myself.” Not that it mattered. That part of his life was over. But it wasn’t like he had despised everything about Sinnoh. He’d loved the different towns there. He’d loved traveling around, looking at art and visiting museums. He’d loved @artemis , even if perhaps the feeling hadn’t been mutual. That wasn’t the right way to word it. More like…their love for each other hadn’t been nearly the same caliber. He scratched his cup idly, looking back down as he got stuck on this thought. [break][break]

He caught sight of the silly ears popping up from behind the counter, and Mint’s demeanor immediately shifted to the mood he’d entered with again. Pale, green eyes stared back at the Alolan Raichu, and he grinned after a moment before giving the pokemon a little wave. “Hello there~ Are you Rayne’s assistant?” he asked having seen the dual type helping the trainer earlier.

"Oh, yes, when I can, at least. One meager garden atop this big boat isn't quite enough to sustain 5 days a week of customers, after all." Rayne had said with a smile, though he'd shortly chuckled, "a good minute or two, or a good breath or two should fix that up," he'd nodded, scruffling up the top of his Raichu's head, the pokémon in question giggling while pawing away his hand.[break][break]

"Oh, I do live there right now, or at least, I boat this big old thing back there on the weekends but, I'm actually all the way from sunny old Alola! There's a place that's quite similar to that peaceful floating town on Poni Island! Though if we go even further back, I'm Kalosian by birth," he'd explained with a smile, "see though, Paua here's a type of Raichu that's more common over in Alola, though there's a funny little theory that it's actually our pancakes that make this happen!" he'd laughed alongside the Raichu, though sombering down shortly as he'd poured himself a glass of cold water.[break][break]

"But, no, I've actually only come here recently, actually around the time of the whole tournament." Rayne had taken a quick sip of his glass, "though how about you, Mint, whereabouts are you from? And what's got you over in Hoenn?" he'd asked with a courteous smile, his Raichu however though giving Mint a chipper little nod in response to his question, smiling and seeing it fit to pull out another couple of cookies from behind the counter to give the customer, to which Rayne had laughed.[break][break]

"I reckon she likes you!"

Mint let out a small laugh. “Oh, I’m sure! I’d think that you would at least enjoy the fruits of your own labor and use them in your personal meals.” He said. Mint nodded looking back at his cup and going in for another taste. He blew carefully as he listened. He’d never sat at a café like this before. The atmosphere is warm, homely. He could see how a place like this would be popular. Especially when the waitstaff was friendly, beyond just the casual customer service voice. Then again, he was probably afforded this opportunity because of the lack of customers currently inside. [break][break]

“Really?” He let out a little gasp trying to imagine the distance traveled on his little boat. “You’re well-traveled then~” He nodded a long before chiming in again. “That’s a good time to show up, at least if you’re advertising a business. Lots of tourists in town. It was pretty fun, I think.” He’d already been around and had just decided to enjoy the tournament more so than participate in it. He hid his face as he looked down to take another sip, not really interested in talking about where he was from. He missed Sinnoh, but he didn’t want to be associated with it. Though, there was probably no harm in mentioning the place it still scared him to think about. “Ah you know…loosely Sinnoh. I’ve gotten work at a daycare in Lillycove, and I just wanted to see what it’s like living somewhere more…tropical.” He lied, looking back up at Rayne and then at Paua. [break][break]

He held back a squeal as she offered him more cookies. He carefully took them, taking a moment to dunk them in his coffee for a few seconds before eating it. “Thank you Paua you’re so sweet! You must get it from your owner, huh?” he asked offering his hand to shake her paw. He mainly wanted to look at the beans. “But to clarify, I’ve been in Hoenn for about a year and some change now. I live in Lillycove too, but I sometimes make my way down here, or Mauville because of daycare or shopping stuff.”

Rayne laughed, "well, you caught me," you could almost hear the grossly sugarcoated 'teehee' from the man as he'd been caught red-handed about his garden's uses. He'd smiled whilst leaning back against the wall, taking another quick sip ~~lucky fucking bastard, it's so hot in my room, please send help~~ pretending to look away as his Raichu kept an eye on her trainer, trying her best to be casual as she tried to sneak more cookies to Mint, the young entrepreneur seeming to not mind it so much.[break][break]

He couldn't help but chuckle at Mint's comment on him being 'well-travelled', in truth, Rayne had visited quite a few regions, enough that he couldn't name them all of the top of his head, but that may have been due in part to his natural airheadedness, though, most of his travels had been done modelling or some other odd job he's had an interest in.[break][break]

"It certainly was rather busy, it was a crazy enough ordeal that my Duskull evolved into a Dusclops and a Dusknoir just from all that extra work he was doing!" he'd slapped his knee as if he were joking, a hearty, teary laugh, yet despite it, that genuinely had been the case.[break][break]

"Certainly a lot warmer than frigid old Sinnoh," he'd said with a smile full of both nostalgia and anguish both fond and bad memories bubbling up in his mind as he recalled a gig in Snowpoint, and just how cold he'd gotten nearly freezing in the snow as the director kept demanding retakes ~~when it wasn't his ass in the snow~~.[break][break]

"I haven't visited Lilycove quite yet, now that I think about it, maybe I'll schedule a little day trip for myself," Rayne had chuckled, taking one last gulp of water and putting the cup in the sink to clean up a little later.

Green eyes flitted between owner and Raichu as Mint watched the electric type smuggled him more cookies for his coffee. He smiled, blowing the pokemon a quick kiss behind Rayne’s back before quickly dipping the cookies into his drink and shoving them into his mouth, again to keep Rayne from spotting the evidence. “A Dusknoir huh? That’s amazing! Poor thing must have been going in overdrive then~” He couldn’t imagine working service during something as crazy as the Tournament. How exhausting. “Absolutely.” He agreed. Though Mint wasn’t really sued to the warmth when he’d first arrived at Hoenn, he was doing better now. Still, he often found himself sitting around in Shoal Cave on days where the heat was unbearable. [break][break]

“Oh, you should! It’s such a nice beach side city!” Mint said perking up from his drink and grinning. “There’s all sorts of things to do, and it’s never quiet, even on holiday surprisingly. Oh- and the food is amazing.” the trainer began gushing, only stopping short to have more of his au lait. “I’m particularly fond of this place that teaches you how to make your own crepes.” He added. It had been sort of natural to settle down in Lillycove. [break][break]

The city was big, and bustling. One of Hoenn’s biggest, and there were always people. The shopping was varied, and the food was so diverse. The access to the sea made it easy to catch water pokemon to ferry you to Mossdeep, and well. In a city, you could lose yourself and never be found if you didn’t want to. That suited Mint just fine. “If you ever need a tour guide, I’m more than happy to help.” He offered. “Although, in the interest of being transparent…I must admit I just want to see Paua again~” he added with a laugh.
