The hike continued.

He wondered if he was going to have to spend another month and a half—or even longer—just looking for the last two Pokémon he needed to complete the collection of Ice-types.

One of them was the Ice-type Sandshrew that was native to the Alolan region. He wondered if every single one of them had just—gone up and out and taken an extended vacation and avoided the Hoenn region altogether.

How long was it going to take for him to find that one, if not that one—the other Ice-type he needed?

But a short bark of laughter escaped him; how even was it possible to encounter the Ice-type Rotom in here? That was unnatural in and on itself, really.

First encounter this time and it’s another Mamoswine.

Although unlike the last one he’d met that had scuffed tusks, this one’s looked a little less… worn.

Maybe it was a younger kid? Or something?

Squinting at the mammoth Pokémon made him reconsider that—

Nah, this was definitely that other Mamoswine’s kid.

“Hey, go on now. I got no intention to break you away from your dad. He’d come after me if I did, so… go on! Go look over there, though,” he said, initially trying to shoo the Pokémon away but deciding to give it a helping hand instead.

“There’s lots of those weird mushrooms your dad likes digging up over there. I know,” he continued, wondering if the Mamoswine could really understand him.

Either way—

He went the opposite direction of where the Mamoswine was now trundling away to.

He guffawed out loud at the next Pokémon that appeared.

Did the cosmos have a warped, twisted sense of humor or something?

“Oh, come on,” he began with a hand on his waist. “Really?”

The Avalugg recognized the human standing before him; but instead of attacking, instead trundled along on its way—there was something she could tell about him, that there was already one of her own among his ‘kind’.

“Nah, I’m not here to get you. I was just—walking around,” he said to the Avalugg. Like she could understand him, right?

On the contrary, though, having a snarky deity taking up residence in the back of his head did help him somewhat understand—not by speech but by gut feeling.

He then continued deeper into the caves.

Did someone literally hit the rewind’ button just now?

Because instead of an Avalugg, this time the smaller version of Avalugg came waddling around, sharp pointy head teetering as it tottered around the slippery icy paths that lined Shoal Cave.

“Wait… was that your parent just now?” he asked the Bergmite, who looked panicked. Clearly it was looking for something—or someone, if he was being honest with himself.

He then pointed in the direction where the Avalugg had wandered off to.

“Because if that Avalugg was a family member then they went in that direction,” he gestured, pointing down the path where he’d encountered said Avalugg before watching the Bergmite slip and slide, chasing after what he guessed correctly to be the Bergmite’s parental figure.

All’s well that ended well, he surmised.
