Really?

They had to be moving now, of all times?

Sighing, as he knew he wasn’t going to be able to get a break, Lars then fiddled around with the screen of his PokéGear before sighing. Word had been sent out that the Rockets were sighted, and they were moving in towards Oldale—and the closest place they were expected to strike would be around Petalburg.

Thank Arceus I’m already here, he thought grimly as he parked his bike at the back of the local Pokémon Center before heading in, swapping out one of the six Pokéballs he had with him and getting his team freshened up. He’d also just finished making his deliveries for the day, and now had free time to kill…

…well that was until the urgent message beeped in and his plans for catching a nap in one of the Center’s rooms before heading back to Verdanturf to rest were shot out the window. Although he was a Ranger, well, he was one of the closest…

“Thanks,” he said quietly to the Nurse Joy as she rolled back the Pokéballs that contained his team of six, before dropping the shrunken marbles down his jacket pocket and heading out of the building. He’d gotten word that he’d be meeting with another; he idly wondered if it was going to be either Cait or Stormy?

Snorting a bit, he shook his head before standing near the edge of the city’s borders closest to Oldale—the reported place where the pocket of Rocket activity had been sighted.

Also, lethal force? That’s strange. They never let us do that before… this is new, he thought as a concerned frown crossing his features.

before slateport fell, she was a senior ranger. before she was given a lab in the depths of a league building in lilycove, she was meant to keep the region safe. the wilds are her domain, though it doesn't feel that way recently.

the alert flashes across the screen of persephone's phone, and she answers the call because she's duty-bound and because she craves the adrenaline. this won't be like slateport.

a number of league trainers are gathering at the outskirts of petalburg, splitting into allocated pairs or small groups before disappearing in the woods for what is most likely going to be guerilla warfare.

she sees him alone, double checks the brief profile - name, trainer id, a small and likely dated photograph - on the screen of her phone to be sure he is her assigned partner before approaching. there's little time to waste on pleasantries, but she feels it necessary regardless.

"laurence? i'm persephone, we're to be working together this evening." her tone is pleasantly cordial, but she can tell it's rigid. she thinks nothing of meeting new people and making small talk, but the stakes are higher here. for tonight, they have to be prepared to trust each other with their lives, and that is a level of trust she isn't prepared to vest easily.

she makes a conscious effort to soften her expression to a ghost of a smile. "i read that you're a ranger? i was employed by that branch for a few years, so i'm glad we were assigned together."

“Yes, that would be me,” he began, turning around for a few moments and seeing his companion for the sortie arrive. His mind then did a double-take—wait a second, wasn’t she the…?

“Looking to move up into the senior ranks, yes, but that’ll come with time. I like handling these kinds of things as they come my way,” he replied a few seconds later, taking a few moments to look at her. He knew that he’d at least heard of the name, it was familiar… he’d come back to that eventually.

“Oh, your reputation precedes you,” he added without thinking—before he realized what he just said. “Sorry about that. But the rest of the teams have already scattered, we should get going, he went on a few more seconds later, looking out over the forest.

Truth be told, he was a little…concerned about Team Rocket’s activity. Were they looking to cut off the rest of western Hoenn and make the entire place their playground? What had prompted them to do such things? What were they going to gain out of all this?

The endless questions continued to swirl in his head, before he squared his shoulders and took in a deep breath. Without thinking, he flicked one, two Pokéballs forward, watching as the forms of his Lucario and Flygon emerged from their depths.

“Javert, you’re on scouting duty. Go ahead and let us know if it’s safe to proceed. Alpha, you’re with us, scan the area and see if you can pick out some other auras lurking behind the undergrowth,” he instructed his two companions—before the Flygon nodded and took off at a hurried pace, while the Lucario closed his eyes and began to cast out its aura-reading capabilities over the area. Hoping that they didn’t have to deal with too many of the Rockets, otherwise it would be a real mess on their hands…

- sends out Flygon and Lucario
- Flygon is on advance scouting duty
- Lucario scans the area for other auras lurking nearby

at his words, persephone's lips quirk into a smile - somewhere between practiced and genuine. she isn't used to being recognised in any capacity and she's not sure how to react. the fact that he urges them to move on is a relief.

more importantly, he seems confident, capable. that alone is a relief.

"you're right. i understand that for now we're just sweeping the area down through route 102?"

as they move out, persephone watches laurence's lucario with obvious curiosity. she had brought along her own lucario for the same purpose, and indeed, pridian has served her well for a number of years; he's nothing if not the centerpiece of her team. it will be interesting to see whether the pokemon operates the same way that hers does.

"both your pokemon look very well-trained," she says in a hushed tone.

it is harder to allow someone else to do a role she felt accustomed to, but she pushes the thought aside. if they can't trust one another, they have nothing.

persephone remains silent for several long moments following that, allowing them to lead the way, taking the opportunity two pokemon of her own.

at a hushed command, barely audible, the chandelure melts into the shadows of the trees. only her eerie gold eyes remain, two yellow moons flitting among the undergrowth.

the sigilyph remains close to them, hovering a few paces behind and ready to cast defensive skills to negate any damage if anything were to occur.

» releases sigilyph and chandelure
» sigilyph on look-out nearby
» chandelure lurks in shadows ready to defend/attack
» leaves analysing the area to lucario

“Pretty much, yes,” he answered her question quietly, watching as the Lucario sunk into a meditative state and let its aura-sensing ability spread out from where he stood. “If there’s more than we can handle we can call for backup, but I’m hoping that we don’t have to resort to that…” he added a few moments later, mentally crossing his fingers and hoping that this was so.

Further up ahead, his Flygon had darted through the undergrowth, not making a sound as he hovered through, passing by what appeared to be two glittering eyes—and catching the whiff of fire coming from it. Similar to a female Ranger’s Chandelure but at the same time not quite so, the Flygon shakes off its worry—and continues forward for a few more moments.

Back where they wait, the Lucario then turns around, stoic expression before holding up two digits and making at the same time to use his foot to draw two straight lines before pointing around them. Taking this to be a sign that they weren’t alone, he then turns to her, continuing quietly, “There’re two incoming,” before hearing a sudden shrieking Screech came from somewhere—his Flygon’s way of alerting him that there was something amiss before the sounds of a battle began out in the forest.

“Alpha, you know what to do,” he said in his Lucario’s direction, watching as the dual-type prepared to Counter any attack that would be flung their way—and a few seconds later, the sudden spikes of a Stone Edge shoot up not too far away from where Alpha stands. Taking the hit, he then boomerangs it back in the direction of what Lars recognizes to be a Lycanroc with orange fur.

“They’re here,” he continued, quickly plucking up another Pokéball and tossing it forward, backing away as his Metagross unfolds its form from the beam of red light. A sudden Rock Slide comes hurtling their way—and without a second thought, the Metagross stomps its foot and uses its Telekinesis to stop the rocks in midair before hurtling them towards the direction they came from—another Lycanroc, but this time with a dark-red coat of fur!

“Looks like they’re going for the Pokémon approach,” he said a few moments later, his eyes flickering from left to right—he’d want to pounce on whatever grunt was headed their way as fast as he could manage. And hopefully, haul them in for questioning.

- Flygon's Screech alerts them that they're not alone! (off-screen, is in a battle with a Midday-Lycanroc)
- Lucario picks up 2 unfamiliar human auras, gestures to the party that they're headed their way
- Lucario prepares to Counter, and sends an incoming Stone Edge back towards a Midnight-Lycanroc
- Metagross hits the field a few moments later before an incoming Rock Slide from a Dusk-Lycanroc heads their way; uses Telekinesis to stop it and send it back
- (feel free to come up with a thematic team of three 'mons for your Grunt! Mine has an obsession with Lycanroc)

two approaching trainers, two lycanroc. that bodes badly for her current pokemon, with both at a type disadvantage. persephone puts the thought aside and focuses on the matter at hand; the sigilyph isn't designed for combat anyway, it's primary purpose is to mitigate damage.

a flick of her wrist commands the sigilyph to put up first a LIGHT SCREEN and secondly a REFLECT around their small group. the defensive barriers glimmer momentarily, translucent in the weak light to signify their presence, then fade into the air quickly. she feels safer for knowing that they're there. the sigilyph doesn't hesitate to use MIRACLE EYE next, seeking out their next target beyond the lycanroc.

it finds it, giving a strange eerie cry to indicate that another pair of pokemon are on their way.

a seviper attempts to sneakily burst out from the ground beside them, but the chandelure interrupts with a TAUNT that focuses the foe's attention on it instead. the distraction is enough; working together, the sigilyph casts a PSYCHIC on the seviper that tosses it aside.

another disturbance but from above; a honchkrow swoops down from overhead, landing an unexpected NIGHT SLASH on sigilyph. the pokemon would usually be more injured, but the effect of the defensive skills is that it does little. the fact that the enemy pokemon got close works to their advantage. the chandelure catches the honchkrow in a TELEKINESIS of her own, and with the pokemon vulnerable, lights it up with a HEAT WAVE.

» sigilyph uses reflect and light screen on their group
» sigilyph uses miracle eye to seek out their enemies + psychic on enemy seviper
» chandelure uses telekinesis and heat wave on enemy honchkrow
» my grunt is just a typical rocket grunt with seviper and honchkrow :>

It was real thankful that out of his Pokémon, most of them knew how to fight without him commanding them around so much. Maybe it was with the way he raised them, he didn’t know—but he let them do their thing most of the time—at least until they were backed into a corner and then forced to turn to him for some direction.

He thought he heard a Screech coming from somewhere in the distance—a familiar-sounding one.

“Shit,” he hissed, quickly reaching into his jacket and pulling out a Moon Ball, he spun it around for a few moments before popping it to full size and sending his Swampert out, watching as the form hit the ground from the flash of red light that emerges from it.

“Sui, go help Javert. Seems like he’d having problems,” he said quietly, before getting a nod from the dual-type and watching as he shot off in the darkness, headed towards the loud screeching noise where the Flygon was having a rough time fending off the Midday-Lycanroc, who’d gone and used Stone Edge to try and force the dragonfly into a corner. Letting out another panicked Screech, the Flygon then attempted to bat back the incoming barrage with a sudden Boomburst attack—the sudden explosion of noise catches the Lycanroc off-guard, if but for a few moments.

Just as the pale Lycanroc was beginning to recover, a sudden burst of water smacked into it face-first—the Swampert had arrived with a powerful Hydro Pump entrance! Letting out a warbling noise of relief, the Flygon was about to whip up a Sandstorm when the Swampert leapt forward—only to jump back a bit before releasing a Whirlpool vortex of water and catching the Midday-Lycanroc unaware, trapping it between the sudden burst of water.

Back where the Lucario had used Counter, the attack was taken—the wince on Alpha’s face was obvious—before he flung out his arms in a sweeping gesture, sending the attack backwards at the Dusk-Lycanroc, before quickly following it up with a homing Aura Sphere attack.

“Alph, be careful,” he calls out, his eyes scanning the darkness, trying to pick out where the Grunt he was supposed to deal with was hiding. The Lucario then focuses again, Nasty Plot before firing off a second auric sphere of energy should the first one get blocked somehow—and for some unexpected reason it does get blocked! Frowning slightly, he knew that the second would hit this time—Alpha made sure of it.

Over where his Metagross was, Ro was now using another Telekinesis to hold the Midnight-Lycanroc in mid-air, listening to the sudden yelping noises that it was making before the Metagross came in close and aimed a point-blank Meteor Mash attack right at its face. Well, not powerful enough to outright kill it, but forceful enough to stun it and force it down.

Hopefully that would force the Grunt commanding the three canines out of hiding…

- Flygon Screeches for help, Lars sends out Swampert and instructs Suijin to go help the Flygon
- Back where the Flygon is, gets cornered by Midday-Lycanroc’s Stone Edge and uses Boomburst to delay imminent doom
- Midday-Lycanroc gets knocked down because of the shock waves, before it can retaliate a sudden Hydro Pump enters the scene, Swampert has arrived
- Swampert then uses Whirlpool a few moments later
- Over where Lucario is, Counter activates and sends the damage back two-fold at the Dusk-Lycanroc, follows it up with Aura Sphere
- For some strange reason the first Aura Sphere gets blocked, he doesn’t know how, so Nasty Plot + Aura Sphere #2 follows right after that
- Metagross now holding up Midnight-Lycanroc in mid-air with Telekinesis, before coming in with a Meteor Mash at practically point-blank range!
