One year. That's how long her surfboard had been gathering dust within her waterlogged house in Lilycove (which still needed some serious repairing). Like many things, she'd left the board to rot along with the memories it brought. At the time, she'd needed to step away from any and all reminders.

Not anymore.

Today its polished surface shines under a descending sun as Skyler makes her way to the beach on one of her rare off days. The waves, she notices, aren't anything to write home about, but that doesn't really bother her. She's not here for amazing waves, not when nostalgia tastes bittersweet on her tongue.

Hell, if anything she can create her own.

"Kinda empty..." A lone surfer catches her eye, but their features are blurred by distance. From the shallow waters, Sirena seems to huff in exasperation.

"Yeah, yeah. I'm going..."

The ocean welcomes her with open arms as she paddles beyond the crashing waves to find that sweet spot.

eventually, he finds himself laying flat on his board as the tides of the ocean continue to push and pull, swaying, but never rocking. it's why, when someone else approaches, he doesn't notice them. it's only when his mantyke squeaks a bubble that he looks up and over.

"you might be here a while! it's really quiet today."

he blinks, recognition finally hitting him. in his defense, it's been a year.

"oh, shit. skyler?"

The tides bring them unintentionally closer, but it isn't until a voice calls out to her, somewhat muffled over crashing waves and the calls of overhead Wingulls, that recognition widens her eyes.

Shock slams into her gut with all the subtlety of a Steelix in a china shop, and nearly as destructive.

Was that- No, it couldn't be. There was no way...

Was there?

Shading her eyes against the sun's bright glare, Skyler is met with impossibly familiar features. The Mantyke by his side and the surfboard under him only complete the picture.

He was supposed to be dead. She'd read about it. She'd heard about it.

"... Lance?"

What the actual fuck.

lance often forgets how some of the reports and news from the war reported that he had died in it. in reality, he had been confined to a hospital bed, stuck in a coma for a few months, then physical rehab for a few more.

so he doesn't see the confusion behind her voice as anything more than the 'hey, it's been a year since we last met!' type.

"you're finally surfing, huh?"

he paddles over, then shifts up to sit. scars drag across his chest and body, clear remnants of the war.

"you any decent yet?"

It was easy enough to find information about the war and its aftermath. TV stations, both national and international, had scarcely talked about anything else in the months that followed. Skyler - who had never been one to follow the news to begin with - had avoided televisions for months after the Lilycove raid.

And so it should come as no surprise that she'd never read about Lance's apparent survival.

Her face loses all animation when a man she'd thought long dead approaches, casual. Sharp silver travels over tan skin (from being out in the water or from working farther inland?) to trace the edges of horrific scars, spanning the length of his torso.

Without being aware of it, Skyler leans forward to grip the rounded edge of a shoulder with calloused fingers, thumb brushing over scarred tissue.

"What the fuck, Lance. I thought you were dead."

Because what else would you stay to someone who'd risen from the dead?

realization strikes him when she reaches out for him. he tenses for a moment, but relaxes as her thumb brushes over his scars. he exhales a chuckle, shaking his head.

"not yet, unfortunately."

the mantyke on his back chirps, sliding down and into the water.

"i would've called, but..."

what would he have said? 'sorry i'm not dead?'
