Another farm needed help; this time it was near the Petalburg City outskirts—the part leading towards Oldale Town/

Thankfully, this time, there were no wolves or Wooloo to be had. However, this farm was looking for extra hands to help with carting away pumpkins, clearing away dead leaves, the usual farm life stuff.

He didn’t mind throwing in some of his time, because honestly what else could he do? He was an eighteen year old not-so-kid anymore, and yet he didn’t have a job, so freelancing it is!

He hoped he wasn’t going to get a farmer’s tan while staying out in the sun for so long. It wouldn’t be good for his prosthetic arm, at the very least.

Even in a place like Hoenn, not all news were about incredible events and chaos.

Sometimes, even someone like Percy got assigned to write an article about simpler and more mundane matters. Things like, for example, the lifestyle of the more rural communities of Hoenn.

Now, for the sake of said article, research was necessary, and what better way to research than to go to a farm himself? Out here, at the outskirts of Petalburg City, no strangle symbols marked the fields like at the farm near Oldale where he had met Pace Mahmoud. Out here, there was peace and quiet: roaming Mareep, grazing Gogoat and Skiddos, and farmers horse riding from one place to the other atop of large Mudsdale.

Looking up at the person who’d called his attention, he blinked.

“Oh, well—I don’t know if the Miltank would like my hands, they’re… they’re cold,” he explained. This was fact, at least. He was aware at least, milking Miltanks needed warm hands, but he only had one flesh-and-blood hand…

“I wouldn’t want to scare any of them away,” he admitted with a sheepish apology as he scratched the back of his head.

Admittedly, there were other things that could be done out here too, like horse riding, but he preferred riding his own Golurk if he was being honest with himself.

“I can help bring them over, though—” he offered, just in case there were any other Miltank still grazing outside.

There was no shift in his expression when listening to the boy’s words, grey eyes simply watching him as if looming rainclouds. What he meant was obvious enough, but if Percy felt any guilt or remorse for having asked such a question, there were no signs to show as much.

Milking Miltanks was definitely not something Percy cared much for doing either, but it was what he had been asked to do, and it sounded simple enough. How hard could it be, right?

“Be right back, then,” he said as he made a mad dash outside, because there were no Miltanks in the barn and here he was, going to get one since there were no Miltanks in the barn at the moment.

It did remind him of the Moo-moo Milk farm on the outskirts of Enju, back home. Back then, when he was much younger… he’d run out there to see the big Miltanks grazing, eating Oran Berries out of whosever’s hand they managed to catch.

It was like a wave of nostalgia had overtaken him.

He would eventually return—shoving one of the Miltank into the barn as he did so. Why did he end up chasing the stubborn one down?!

He had to take his trench coat off because it had gotten pretty hot and sweaty chasing the bovine down—

And he didn’t realize that his prosthetic right arm was there, revealed for the other guy to see in all its burnished glory.

While the boy went to retrieve the Miltank, Percy busied himself with grabbing a bucket and a stool, taking a moment to take in the sights surrounding him. Calm. Peaceful. For some reason, places like these always made him think of home, even if the Munn family’s household was no farm at all. But, there had always been farmlands nearby, especially back in Galar...

The sight of the boy and his prosthetic right arm also made him think of his hometown, but in a much different way. Of Ecruteak, this time. Of terrible events that happened long ago.

It could only be a coincidence, right? What were the odds?

Still, journalist as he was, his curiosity was always one to drive Percy forward.

”Cool arm.” The comment comes as merely that: a comment and nothing more. Matter-of-factly and lacking in pity or anything else as he takes a seat by the Miltank in the barn – petting it to calm it down. ”Is that why you were worried about scaring the Miltank?”

“Oh, this?” he said without thinking, before realizing what the other was talking about.

He knew he’d thrown his trench coat down somewhere to wrangle the Miltank, but had forgotten entirely about the entire right arm—

“Yeah, I’m worried, mostly about my right hand. Miltanks tend to spook easy when the hands that apparently milk them are cold. Something about warmth,” he explained.

“Something I overheard from the farm hands down at that Moo-moo farm outside Enju,” he added absently as he crouched down and pushed the bucket closer, stretching out his left leg in the process and revealing a portion of it.

As he petted the Miltank and set everything up, Percy quietly listened to the boy’s words, looking down at his hands and wondering if they would be warm enough. Until a single word caught his attention and caused him to calmly turn to look at Arashi.

”Oh… That’s a weird coincidence. I’m also from Enju.” His gaze inspected the teenager for a second, searching for a familiarity that wasn’t there at all, and once confirming this fact, he turned towards the Miltank again, a stream of fresh milk soon crashing against the inner wall of the metal bucket.

So, maybe that passing memory was right after all?

”There’s not many of us around here. Have you been in Hoenn for a while?”

That made him look up, blinking as the other began the process of milking the Miltank that was now standing still to be milked.

Bless the bovines, they really did know how to behave after all. What was it with Miltank clamming up when they were, you know, milked for the delicious… white… juice.

He stood up and then began patting the back of the Miltank’s neck with his left hand, the better to calm the Pokémon down.

“Been here in Hoenn since I was fifteen, actually. There was… nothing left for me back home,” he admitted quietly.

And did he even grow up in those three years after he got his first prosthetic limbs? Well, maybe a little. For starters he wasn’t ‘running on the wrong side’ of things anymore, but the inherent distrust of figures in power was still there.

Perhaps it was the fact that they were both from the same place in another region he was more prone to talking about—things.

He had yet to confide with any of the other kids about what he’d gone through, although when that crazy-ass shit had gone down when people started seeing nightmares in that purple cloud, well…

“I couldn’t…save them, my family,” he said, thoughts very distracted as the Miltank tried to sniff at him, looking for what he guessed were Oran Berries. What was it with Miltanks and Oran Berries?

“From… the fire.”

Ecruteak City wasn’t particularly big, nor was it a particularly dangerous place. Even during Rocket’s attempt at taking over the region, not many tragedies happened in the northern areas of Johto, and as such, it wasn’t difficult to figure out exactly what the boy was talking about.

Thanks to his line of work, Percy has met many people who have been through many tragedies before, and as such he knew there was so very little that could make any difference at all.

How did he end up here? Well, that was a tricky question to answer.

“Well, let’s just say—I came here with a bunch of people,” he began, patting the Miltank’s snout with his right hand as the bovine continued to be milked. “Thing is, after some time… well, I—I didn’t like what they were doing. So I left them.”

That was as best as he would explain.

“And I’ve been living on the road ever since, surviving in the wild. But it’s something I’m used to now.”

The Miltank gave a little ‘moo’ noise, before he continued to give said bovine reassuring pats.

“Also, what the hell are taxes, man, I don’t get that shit,” he added as he broke out into a bark of laughter.
