As he wandered deeper into the fog, he thought he heard a snarking cackle in the back of his head.

‘Looking for something?’

‘What do you think?’

‘I can’t blame you there, however you do know you’re still missing one more… Ice-type, right?’

‘What?’

‘You heard me!’

‘Oh, come on!’

He then came to a stop for a few moments and sighed; pinching the bridge of his nose. Okay, he would admit—he was missing one particular Ice-forme. Not a type, but a forme of a type.

Holy shit, wasn’t there like several variants of the story on how the Banette line came to be? Like, one of them involved an abandoned doll being possessed by a vengeful spirit.

Another variation of the ‘tale’ he knew was that there was some kid who’d died and wanted to get back at the world so much it would curse itself over and over, sticking pins into its body like—

The last Pokémon that he would encounter would be—

Oh, come on!

While he didn’t have that strange ‘report’ thing, he knew that some of the other Rangers did! Alas he couldn’t ask to meet up with his friend as they were busy with a sudden influx of gym challenges…

The Unown blinked at him, wagging its… ‘tail’… before a Swampert hit the ground from his side of the field.

“Don’t overdo it—” he remarked, but the Swampert had leapt into action, suddenly blasting a Whirlpool vortex of water at the strange letter-shaped Pokémon, who had lashed out with a strange attack that did… what?

What on earth was Hidden Power supposed to do, really?

The vortex of water kept the Unown trapped, and it continued to thrash and fight against the current; at least until it was thrown out of the Whirlpool of water and tried to attack the Swampert with another Hidden Power attack, whatever it did.

However, the Swampert countered with a Hydro Pump—and before it could be thrown into the mist, the red beam of light from a thrown Pokéball saved it as Lars realized what Ryujin was about to do…
