Lovely Kiss with Rhian McArthur

When he opens his eyes, he finds Rhian smiling at him. With only that small gesture, he knows that everything was worth it. starting with waking up at the most unholy hours of the morning so he could fly to slateport to pick her up, fighting the rockets near oldale and finally all these attentions he took special measure with.

She starts talking of the past, a time he knows was hard for her to live and hard even now to remember. She struggles and gulps down her tears. Leo is there for her, arm wrapped around her shoulders and soothing.

He can't possibly regret chasing after his dreams, but he does hate not having been there for her after graduation. Calls every few days and gifts handed to her by strangers, anyone but him, were never enough.

Now that she's here in Lilycove though, he'd make sure to make up for every day away.

rhian smiles

at her boyfriend's answer. with him around, she feels safe.

their pizza arrives only moments later. although it's frustrating to abandon the couch a second time (they probably should have planned this a little better), rhian does so gladly at the promise of still hot dough and pinap.

luckily, they can take advantage of the interlude to get changed into their sleepwear for extra comfiness.

they eat a slice of pizza each, and then rhian steals a slice of leo's side, before they finally play the movie (leo always complains that her munching is too loud for him to concentrate).

it is everything rhian wanted. she squeals and giggles and hurts with the protagonist, and every time she sneaked a glance at leo, she could see him watching the movie just as attentively as she was.

and then, despite herself, she sniffles.

Lovely Kiss with Rhian McArthur

The movie is everything Leonardo feared. Cheesy, overdone plot with even cheesier clichés used indiscriminately and characters so bland and two-dimensional that it's impossible to feel any level of empathy for them. To top it all off, the acting is awkward and cringy, bordering creepy.

Until this moment, engrossed as he was mentally counting every plot hole he could find in the movie, he didn't notice anything off about the girl curled up next to him. Now, as he turns to look at her, he realizes she's avoiding his gaze in a very suspicious way.

"Are you crying?"

With the hand he doesn't have wrapped around her shoulders, he moves to cup her face for a proper view.

"No way, you really are crying. This is worse than those stupid Castelian romcoms you like watching."

oh no,

she's about to get caught. rhian shakes her head vehemently and dreads the moment leo's hand reaches her face, lifting it up to him for inspection.

"i'm not crying," she denies as soon as the words exit leo's mouth. her tone kind of gives her away, though. another "i'm really not!" is all she can think to do anymore before she gives up trying to pretend.

but leo thinks it's the movie that has her like this, and rhian doesn't mind keeping up the pretense. it's better than making him feel guilty about decisions made in the past.

it's just the movie. the way the protagonist is caught between her duty to her family and her love of her life is just too cruel, as is the way he pushes her away in his attempt at making the decision easier for her, despite it not being what either of them wants.

Leonardo is happy to oblige to Rhian's adorable request. After letting her make her very own nest next to him and wiping her tears away, some with his lips and some with the tips of his fingers, he wraps his arms around her and comfortably places his jaw on top of her head.

A few seconds pass before he speaks up.

"I take it back. You're not a snorlax."

It almost seems like he says this to make her feel better, referring to his much earlier comment about his girlfriend eating like a snorlax. Leonardo continues his thought before the impression can stick.

"You're more like a crybaby sobble."

Laughter comes naturally, certain his teasing would both change her mood and make her try something on him. He's glad he's got his arms firmly wrapped around her, preventing her from taking physical revenge on him.

leo's plan works

like a charm, and rhian doesn't even notice it. she turns to face him with eyes like daggers. with his hug serving doubly as a prison, rhian limits herself to sticking her tongue out and saying "you're still a pangoro!" before she, too, starts to laugh at the goofy childishness of their argument.

rhian rests her head on his chest again and they continue watching the movie, with no more distractions this time.

in her sleep, she feels the gentle pressure of lips against her forehead.
