Memo paused at the maw of the cave, looking ahead into the spiraling blackness spreading out before him. Granite Cave seemed smaller on TV, when they talked about it’s contributions to local history and culture. He kicked his toe into the dirt, trying to convince himself that he wasn’t nervous; there was definitely something terrifying about descending into pitch darkness, not knowing what might be just around you. Sort of like the ocean, but without the beaches and tropical vibes. [break]
A gentle snort from beside him drew his attention to Zuza. The pony-sized creature nuzzled at his hand, as if trying to convince him everything was going to be okay. She plodded on ahead, cotton-candy colored mane and tail a sharp contrast against the ebony cave backdrop.[break]
Memo had to laugh. He couldn’t be scared of the dark-- he had a fucking rainbow unicorn nightlight.[break]
“Zuza, use Dazzling Gleam.” Sparkles of light began to gather at the tip of her horn, and with a flick of her head, the Galerian Ponyta launched a slowly arching firework of teal and purple sparkles, sizzling and fizzling through the air. It filled the cave mouth and immediate tunnel with enough light that Memo could see he wasn’t going to get ambushed right out of the gate.[break]
Suddenly, a sharp shriek split the air. Something skittered deeper into the cave, sending stones scattering across the rock floor. Memo’s confidence wavered, and he reached out to place a comforting hand on Zuza’s fluffy mane.[break]
They definitely weren’t alone in here.

Of course they weren't alone.

In fact, before that shriek echoed through Granite Cave, Warren had been doing the same thing his soon to be newfound companion was doing. Exploring the area, seeing what was around.

Except, as he had gone further, a Steelix had popped out of no where. An aggressive one at that. So, he needed to take care of it. It's last shriek was loud, impaling his ears and his Pokemons' as it fainted.

"Fuck."

It was a simple curse. Warren would be surprised if his ears weren't bleeding. However, they trekked further in the cave before coming across Memo and his team.

"I didn't expect to find someone else in here."

Memo didn’t know what to expect, heading deeper into the cave. Whatever he thought he’d find, it certainly was not a tall, white-haired man. A very handsome and strapping white-haired man. Memo could climb that like a tree, he reckoned. Except here he was holding onto his rainbow unicorn nightlight and, he imagined, appearing anything but brave or cool right now.

Zuza chose that time to wicker comfortingly and nuzzle Memo’s side, being rather unhelpful.

His gaze tracked behind the stranger-- a difficult thing to do, given how damn broad he was-- to the long, silvery segmented body of the fallen Steelix. Zuza’s lingering dazzling gleam reflected off its protruding jaw, sightless eyes blank in its skull. Memo’s fingers tightened in Zuza’s mane, an unconscious reaction to the unsettling circumstance.

“Don’t imagine so,” Memo joked, forcing a smile to his face. “It’s a pretty big cave after all.” There was a flash of something silver behind Warren and for a second Memo thought the Steelix had gotten back up-- but as he dodged around the large man to protect his six, a natural reaction for Memo, he saw, instead, the ever-rotating gears of a Klinklang.

Zuza was going to be mostly useless against the gyrating beast. Memo snagged a different Pokeball from the pocket of his jacket and tossed it forward. “Shivani, help us out!” The flash of the emerging Shuppet lit up the cave. She beelined for the Klinklang then, at the last second, disappeared. A moment later she popped up behind it, phasing out of thin air, and delivered a fierce sucker punch right to its back.

Not wanting to be left out, Zuza stepped forward, the air between her and the Klinklang warping in a pink and purple. Though the Confusion was only half as effective, it still pressed the Klinklang back slightly, trapping it between the Shuppet pushing at it’s backside and the eager Ponyta at its front.

Memo tossed a PokeBall at the floundering set of gears. Again, the cave flashed full of light as it was yanked into the sphere.

“Comin’ at us from all sides, huh?” Memo said, giving Warren a grin over his shoulder.

When he finally came face to face with this new found companion, Warren's eyes were immediately drawn to the colorful Galarian Ponyta that stood at the man's side. It was a surprise, for sure, but he wasn't one to judge people's Pokemon.

Hell, he really didn't care all that much about it.

His golden eyes drew back up to Memo, who cracked a joke. He gave a gruff hmm in response, stepping forward to walk past him.

However, he noticed that Memo jumped behind him, and he was quick to ensure his team was prepared to attack should the Steelix start lifting its head again. It wasn't the Steelix, though, and Warren relaxed a little bit.

Until he spotted the Makuhita, seemingly appearing out of no where. It punched its gloved hands together, seemingly ready to attack despite the grin on its face.

"I suppose you're right..." he muttered, allowing his Aegislash and Torracat to attack together at once.

With a SHADOW CLAW and a FLARE BLITZ, it seemed to make the Makuhita less willing to attack. With that, Warren pulled a Pokeball from his pocket, throwing it at the creature.

So his new friend wasn’t much of a talker. That was fine, that was fine. Memo could work with silence. He just filled it with his own voice-- much to the chagrin of most everyone around him. At least the guy didn’t seem offended when Memo stepped in to cover his six; in fact, if anything, he acted a bit impressed.

When @warren ’s team of Aegislash and Torracat trounced the Makuhita, and Warren himself made swift work of the capture, it was Memo’s turn to be impressed. “Dang,” he said, as Zuza and Shivani stepped-- or floated-- into place beside him. “You’re good.”

The sound of steel grating against rock filled the air again, and Memo turned to see an angry Skarmory charging them, wings dragging against the stone of the tunnel. Memo jerked his head with the cool-kid chin toss, and Shivani launched a shadow ball at the angry metal bird. Skarmory charged headfirst into the shadowy projectile, squawking and flailing in blindness. Shivani disappeared, and reappeared in a blink, knocking the bird under the beak with a fierce uppercut-style sucker punch. The two halves of its beak clanged together, stunning the thing, and Memo tossed a PokeBall at the dizzy, stumbling bird.

That dealt with, he held out his hand to Warren. “My name’s Memo. You on a mission, or do you just like strolling through dangerous caves for fun?” He winked.

To see him so impressed by this. It was a bit entertaining in Warren's eye. He couldn't help a gruff chuckle and a small smirk on his lips.

"This isn't anything. Just a wild fight. You haven't encountered something like a Rocket Beast, have you?"

Of course, it was meant in jest, but whether his companion would take it as such wasn't up to him.

If he wanted to catch a break, it seemed like it wouldn't be granted. Warren and Memo were caught once again, engaged in another duel between separate Pokemon that decided to spawn. This time, in front of him, was a CUBONE. It decided to use BONEMERANG, throwing its bone like a boomerang at them.

Warren dodged to manage not to get hit in the head. He didn't have effective moves to counter the Cubone, but he decided the same pairing and moves as before would damage it enough to get him to catch it.

"No. I train. And try to catch Pokemon. Is that something you do?" he asked with a skeptical look.

@warren finally cracked a smile and Memo could’ve done a pirouette and anime punched the air. Why, yes, he was entertaining, thank you very much, Mr. Stone Cold Steel Abdominals. But then, the question. It catches Memo off guard. Throws him out of his rhythm. “Can’t say as I have,” he finally admits.

It chafes him a little to have to concede he’s pretty untested; green. But that’s what he is-- Ranger cadet extraordinaire, just a little gumshoe. But he doesn’t bristle, simply cracks a smile and throws a hand over Zuza’s shoulders. “I’m young yet. Got plenty of time to meet my maker.”

He watches Warren nimbly dodge the Cubone’s attack, taking a step back to be firmly out of the line of fire. His ankle brushes against something, and he turns, finding a little Sandshrew cowering against the cave wall, half occluded behind some rocks. “Careful, little one,” he cautions, bending down to pick it up. The baby nestles needily against his throat, warm on his collar bone. Zuza stretches her head up to sniff the critter and it reaches tiny arms down at her. Memo lets it clamber over her noggin and rest between her shoulder blades.

“Correct, on both accounts,” Memo says, one hand on the Sandshrew’s head, where it perches on Zuza like a veritable unicorn-riding-cowboy. “Sometimes with a little adventuring thrown in.”

It wasn't often that people were aware that they had encountered a Rocket Beast or an Underboss. They were definitely some of the strongest fighters in the group, dangerous and powerful.

Warren would know. He used to be high enough in those ranks.

A small shiver trailed down his spine as a few memories clouded his mind. About punishment, beatings, violence to those who disobeyed orders or were guilty of betraying Rocket. Things had changed, but those memories would never leave. Nor would the things he had done.

"Don't wish that upon yourself too quickly. There's more to life than risky business."

A SCRAFTY took the place of the last Pokemon he'd caught. With a simple SHADOW CLAW, he attacked and threw another ball in attempt to capture it.

It seemed Memo took a different approach to his capture, though.

"And that's how you came into Granite Cave, I assume?"

There was a moment of silence where @warren seemed to think deeply about something-- his eyes shifted a bit unfocused and his body went slightly rigid. Then he came back to himself and gently chastised Memo for his foolhardy thrill-seeking ways. A big smile split Memo’s face, fueled by the power of youth, as he leaned back on his Ponyta like he was chilling at a bar during happy hour.

“Aww, but I like risky business,” he said, winking.

A strange sort of groaning echoed around the cavern coupled with an electrical pulse that made the hair on the back of his neck stand on end. He turned to find the Magnezone advancing towards them, now; as Warren dealt with the Scrafty, Memo and his team went to work subduing the Magnet Area Pokemon. Shivani looped around the back of their target and knocked it forward with a sucker punch, while Zuza shook its bolts loose with confusion. The little Sandshrew clapped her tiny paws at the pink and purple rings of aura leaping from the Galarian Ponyta to ensconce Magnezone, who was set off-kilter by the combination of attacks. Memo tossed a Pokeball at the upside down Electric-type to finish the job.

“Somethin’ like that,” Memo confirmed, brushing the dreads out of his forehead. “Guess I was bored.”

Memo certainly had a different aspect to life than Warren did. Perhaps it was age and experience. Who knew. He didn't know his age.

But, from what he could gather, he'd peg him as a younger guy.

"I'll leave that shit up to you then. Gives me more time to focus on other things," he said with a snort.

The SCRAFTY was absorbed into the ball successfully. Warren shared a nod of approval with his AEGISLASH. The next target was a CRABRAWLER. Not the most aesthetically pleasing, but it didn't matter much to him. It just mattered about strength and ability.

This time, he allowed his TORRACAT to send a FLAREBLITZ.

"So, an adventurer. Have you gone anywhere off Hoenn?"
