He found it weird—

Why didn’t the higher-ups contact John Sullivan for this? They were Bug-types, after all… Ledyba and Ledian…

But then again they were also part-Flying, and since Flying just so happened to be his main shtick (plus he was the only one available at the time) he decided to humor whoever had made the mistake of booking him to keep an eye out for predators and…

…mating rituals.

Wait, mating… rituals?!

Oh, if he had to watch the actual mating dance he was going to have to tune all of that out!

Since this was going to be an evening watch, he’d decided to pack some food—because he was sure he wasn’t going to be doing this alone, that there would be someone coming with him…

Little did he know, though, that the someone who would be joining him that evening would be someone he’d only communicated with through text after their ‘chance’ meeting at the speed dating event held recently.

Petalburg was normally a haven for Bug-types, and the forest was never quiet for their buzzing, hissing, clicking, and Wurmpling. But this was the first time he’d ever seen it sparkle. [break][break]

It was like something out of a fairy tale-- Cinderella abandoning her sparkly shoe at the crux of midnight, but instead of a single glass slipper, it was an entire path of glittering dust. It touched the leaves and stuck to the trunks. It made the very air seem to vibrate and shimmer, as if in a dream. [break][break]

Memo pulled his coat collar up over his nose, not wanting to disturb the beauty with something as indecent as his human breath. [break][break]

Floating here and there, fascinated by the Ledian and Ledyba glitter, Shivani coasted, intangible, through the forest, zipper-mouth curved into a smile. [break][break]

And there, at the center of all the glimmer, his princess in repose. [break][break]

He snickered at himself, covered the noise with a cough, and scrubbed a hand across his face. [break][break]

“Fancy seeing you here,” he said, pushing gently out of the gloom to stand next to Alexei Ivanov , under the blanket of stars and dancing ladybugs. [break][break]

“The good thing is I haven’t seen the ritual… I hope not to see any kind of mating between Pokémon,” he replied with a shudder.

The last time he’d had to endure this, it was between a bunch of Pangoro (and that ended up getting pretty violent, if he was being honest). It took him a few moments to realize he wasn’t alone, and that—

“And the same to you,” he bantered back, making sure not to inhale any of that sparkling dust.

“At least you haven’t witnessed a pair of Pangoro slugging it out… terrifying,” he breathed out as his eyes scanned the canopy.

Was he seeing things, or did he see a flash of movement up above…?

He didn’t know why, but the hairs on the back of his neck were prickling… like there was a pair of unseen eyes watching their every move.

Memo snickered, flicking his dreads across his forehead. “What, you don’t like being a peeping tom?” he asked with a wink, one hand in his jacket pocket. Delicate particulates in the air around them made it look like the stars were falling to earth. fascinating.

Alexei seemed to jump a bit, realizing Memo was there. “Yeah, well, I was buggin’ for work. Guess I got what I asked for.” His smile was large and beaming. His pun was horrendous and hamfisted. fascinating.

He turned away from Alexei to look out over the trees and watch the ladybugs dance in the moonlight. “Nah, I’m not so well-versed in the art of Pokemon lovemaking.” He paused for effect, turning back to Alex with one raised eyebrow. “Though it seems like you might be?”

Following Alexei’s gaze up, his expression became a questioning one. “Penny for your thoughts?” he prompted, wondering what was so fascinating.

“It gets really awkward when you watch ‘em doing it by accident, y’know,” he cracked with a smirk, although he still couldn’t shake off the fact that there was potentially someone watching their—his—every move from up in the canopy.

Was it like instinct screaming at him? Who knew?

“And that pun was absolutely terrible,” he continued as he turned to face the other, unable to resist clapping ever so softly—he didn’t want to risk disturbing the air around them, the way it shimmered in the faint evening light.

The other than followed his gaze as he looked around—

“I have a feeling… something’s watching us. If not you, me. I don’t know. It’s this weird, prickly… feeling, I guess,” he remarked.

Dare he say the “G” word?

Maybe not.

He then remembered something.

“Oh, hey, I packed some food. Wanna share?”

It was an innocent question, but well…

Maybe he did pack for two people rather than one.

Alexei’s smile was like starlight, and Memo found a chuckle bubbling to his lips before he could stop it. “Yeah, we’re supposed to be out here protectin’ them, but I guess it’s also an invasion of privacy,” he said, watching two distant Ledian spin around each other in a swirl of sparkling dust, “maybe this is what parents with teenagers feel like?” [break][break]

Not his parents, though. His mom was a brute with a sandal and even better at weaponizing a curfew. [break][break]

The thought made him sad, so he forced a smile to his face when Alexei clapped for his pun. “Thank you, thank you,” he said, with a mock bow, “I’ll be here all night.” [break][break]

Memo hummed a note of thought as Alexei tried to explain what was bothering him. “Maybe you’re allergic to ladybug dust?” Memo suggested with a grin. He was about to take Alexei up on his offer of a snack when Shivani made her appearance, floating down from the canopy to hover peacefully over Memo’s shoulder. [break][break]

“Oh, hey, Shiv,” Memo said on the offhand to his Banette, completely unaware of Alexei’s antipathy for Ghost-types. [break][break]

At the mention of parents with teenage children, if Memo was fast enough to notice something, Alexei’s own stare would harden just a few moments before he burst out into an immoderate fit of hushed laughter.

“I’m going to go with the invasion of privacy part,” he cackled softly, watching as two Ledian were… literally in the middle of things, who knew what the fuck they were doing in mid-air.

No, he did not want to see mating rituals this very evening. It would definitely make him lose his dinner.

“It’s not that I’m allergic to ladybug dust, it’s just, well—” he continued, tilting his head at the two Ledian that were apparently doing…things… in the cover of some undergrowth.

“Yeah. That.”

Another embarrassed chuckle, which then became an almost high-pitched squeak of terror at the sight of the Banette—

“G-g-g-g-g-g-g-g…” he stammered all of a sudden, the hairs on the back of his neck and arms going all prickly as the Ghost-type swooped in and just smirked.

“G-g-g-g-g-g-g…” he tried again, but oh no, oh shit.

Not the “G” word!

At first, Memo thought Alexei didn’t get his joke; but then the strange, hardfaced moment passed and the blonde laughed-- and in that instant, years came off of Memo’s life. Something about making Alexei happy-- someone who seemed so full of worry, and heavy cares-- made Memo’s tummy do flip-flops. [break][break]

Pack that away for later, he thought, pointedly avoiding looking at the ladybugs around them and their mating dances. [break][break]

Still, he couldn’t help but laugh when Alexei pointed it out; but this time, his beautiful laugh twisted into something else, a high vibrato shriek that made Memo jump. He began to stutter and the whale-whites of his eyes flashed as he locked them on Shiv’s floating form. Memo, frozen in surprise and confusion, let his gaze jum from Alex to Shivani and back again, before, slowly, putting two and two together.[break][break]

He really didn’t know how to respond; Ghost-types were, to him, just another kind of Pokemon. He grabbed the little zipper-faced doll and held her close to him, shaking her back and forth so her arms flapped comically. “But, look, she’s a nice ghost.” [break][break]

Shivani could not decide if she was more upset at being shook around like Raggedy Ann or for being so obviously disliked. Her mouth folded into a sad frown as Memo held her against his chest.

Clearly, he’d forgotten to tell the other about his absolute terror of…

“G”.

What “G” to be exact?

Anything that wasn’t his Sableye or Chandelure (or the child-kidnapper), he would automatically run away from. That also included the red-eyed thing that constantly hung around him during a certain time of the month…

He’d gone quiet for a few moments, unable to properly process anything other than his mind going literally a thousand miles a minute, trying not to scream and disrupt the ‘mating dances’ that were probably going on around and elsewhere around them.

The only noise that the other would hear next is a pained croak, at the sight of him actually hugging the specter in his arms like a teddy bear—

He originally intended to jump into the arms of the nearest person he could at the sight of the “G”, but well since the only other person that was with him was holding the “G”…

It was like his soul was escaping his physical body as the last he remembered was his vision blacking out.

Yep.

He’d fainted.

It was almost like Memo could see the universe collapsing; all of existence, circumvented into a single point, a black-hole mirroring the emptiness behind Alexei’s glassy eyes. One moment, the man was frozen, stiff as a board, and the next he was pitching towards the ground.[break][break]

“Wah!” Memo made an inarticulate noise of panic and threw Shivani like a toy, launching her ghostly body spinning sideways into the woods. He slid on his knees in the dirt and managed to catch Alex before he could make landfall; he braced one arm under his neck, blond hair billowing outwards like a halo, and used the other to support the small of his back, laying most of Alex’s top-half on the tops of his thighs.[break][break]

He was a big kid. And heavy, especially when fainted dead away.[break][break]

Shivani came peeking back to see if everyone was okay and Memo gave her a sheepish smile. “Sorry for throwing you,” he said, and the little Banette tilted her head with a grin. “Forgiven?” She nodded. “Would you mind-- thanks, Shiv,” she zipped back into her Pokeball with a flash of light, leaving Memo alone with the fainted Alexei in the midst of a swarm of mating ladybugs. [break][break]

Memo sighed, drawn once again to the allegory of Alex as the princess. The sleeping princess. Maybe to be woken with a kiss?[break][break]

Memo closed his eyes and let his head loll back, laughing. God, you are so gay. [break][break]

“Hey, sleepyhead,” he tried, instead, giving Alexei’s head a small bump forward. “The ghost is gone. You can wake up now.” [break][break]

Above them, the stars twinkled in good humor.

There were a few things that Alexei was afraid of.

One of them was deep water. Another was blood. (Specifically his own blood but we don’t talk about that, shh.)

And lastly?

“G”.

Also known as ‘ghosts’ in general! Well, anything that wasn’t his Chandelure, or Sableye, or the child-kidnapper anyway (because in the Drifblim’s case he defaulted to that as a Flying-type…)

Eventually he would realize that he was near-horizontal and no longer vertical as he came to…

“Why was there a g-g-g-g-ghost? With you?” he managed to stammer at last. God, how he hated that debilitating fear of his. It was.

Terrifying, to say the least!

“How…how are you not terrified of them sucking out your soul?!” he followed up afterward.

Memo declined to mention Alexei was coming to these realizations whilst neglecting to stand up; he pretended his coy smile was relief at the man coming to-- which it was, in a way. But some of it was self-satisfactory, too. [break][break]

“Yes, there was,” he said, calmly and without the slightest hint of mockery. “She’s gone now. I’m sorry, I didn’t realize they affected you that much. Or at all.” [break][break]

Memo felt pretty certain there was a story behind that-- it was Alexei, after all, there was a story behind everything, and endearingly so-- but he didn’t feel like prodding. “Her name is Shivani, and she is my friend.” [break][break]

It was a fair question to ask given how terrifying the concept of ghosts, in general, seemed. There were some Ghost-types with gnarly histories; Banette, in general, was said to be a cursed doll brought to life by sheer hatred. The PokeDex entries said certain Banettes became so strong they cursed their own trainer-- but Shivani was nice. [break][break]

“She’s not like other ghosts, I guess,” he said, lost in his own thoughts, comfortable in the weight of Alexei in his arms. “I’ve had her since she was a Shuppet and she was actually the first Pokemon I caught after coming to Hoenn.” He shook his head, clearing the dreaminess from his mind. [break][break]

“You said something about food?” He asked with a grin, arching forward slightly so the pseudo-intimate position they were in was made extraordinarily clear. He didn’t want to take advantage of Alex’s quote-unquote moment of weakness-- he just wished he’d stop falling down or getting hurt when they ran into each other.

“It’s like… you know… I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the story of Litwick…” he trailed off. Clearly there was something that needed explaining, and here he was to offer the story of why.

“…back where I come from, specifically around Western Unova where there’s a lot of forests, there are these lights that float around the forest… they may look like normal candles, but apparently… Litwick… you know that Litwick look like candles, right?”

He then let a few moments of silence pass before continuing.

“Let’s just say… I almost found out first-hand what happened in those stories of kids getting lost in the forest at night, following purple lights…”

A dry sort of laughter escaped him before he continued.

“Thankfully, my sestras came looking for me. So the tale about Litwick flames being… like… heralds of doom… never found out if that was really true.”

And then mercifully, his attention was then diverted to the food!

“Yeah… I made rice balls. And sandwiches. Actually I think I made too much…” he said with a laugh as he pointed in a general direction where he’d left the container that contained the packed food he’d brought along.

“We can share, if you want to…?”

Ah, as he suspected, there was a story behind it all. He listened to Alexei recount the tale of the Little Litwick Boy and, for all intents and purposes, it did sound very creepy. Definitely harrowing. “Wow, your ghost stories are a lot darker than ours. We have haunted tea.” He snorted. “Cold tea. That’s about as scary as it gets, in Galar.” [break][break]

Alexei seemed thankful to get off the topic of haints and haunts and pointed to the supplies he’d brought. “I think I might have energy drinks in my pack,” Memo said, aware his contribution to their impromptu picnic was lacking, to say the least. [break][break]

He lifted his arms a bit and made a feigned grunting noise, like Alex was too heavy to bear. It was all in jest. “Okay, that’s enough sleeping on the job,” he said, grinning. “We’ve got a long night ahead of us. Lots of ladybugs to watch. Stars to count. You know how it is.”

Clearly, he hadn’t been anywhere outside Hoenn (and Unova if he was going to be honest) so his knowledge about ghost stories was rather limited to say the least.
