"don't you think it's convenient that a big, advanced city like mauville is just a nearby verdanturf and its homey, countryside feel?"

there's sudden musing as they finish their milkshakes on a patio table just outside of a cafe. it's downtime without much to do besides scroll down their phones as they rest their feet.

bags of things they shopped for lay underneath the table, most of them a product of impulse buying: from shirts noah thinks would be cute for him to wear, to shoes that kyle picked out for noah when he asked which ones looked the coolest.

the day was already about to come to an end, and he's still not sure if the itinerary for today's date, courtesy of noah, still had items for them to check off the list.

noah scoops the rest of his extra milkshake from the malt cup. his yamper-lemon treat bears resemblance to the dog no more. it lies at the bottom. instead, all hints of a dog-shape have become an alchemic yellow-gray swirl.

"yeah, like, all that big city buzz without actually living in it. John Sullivan's doin' a good job too."

his sneakers kick close to their purchased wears. driving the last clump of milkshake down his throat, he tips his cup over his face in a blinding fit of gluttony.

a dollop lands on his shirt in his fit.

"ugh, crap. this always happens." noah says, wiping his mouth. "wanna head to the rooftop? to catch the sunset." he scoops the excess milkshake off with his finger as he fiddles with his shirt.

the blunder gets fondly eyed by kyle, his subconscious not really getting surprised by the clumsiness. it's part of the charm that draws him near him, he supposed.

"eh. why not?"

kyle was never for the sappy, emotional things, but he's always willing to have his expectations broken. he's certain noah was going to do something that catches him off-guard by then, whether intentional or not, so he goes in for the ride.

he takes off from the table, grabbing his drink with one hand, and then taking noah's finger with the other. he licks off the sweetness of the milkshake from it before wiping it with a napkin. he gives the napkin to noah afterwards to wipe his shirt with it.

"you planning on anything? you know we can always watch the sunset wherever."

it's his curious, pragmatic nature that speaks this time instead of the whiney one.

"whoa, hey. that tickles." the gym leader says, taking his finger back with a laugh.

noah wipes his shirt with the napkin, grimacing when the stain is pushed into the threads more than it is cleaned. after, he crushes the napkin into an agitated togedemaru. tosses it into a nearby bin.

"yeah, some good ol' rooftime kissing." he says with an exaggerated shrug. a joke. "nothing really. just thought it'd be nice for the view. for the privacy."

he drops everything and stands from his seat immediately after, leaving behind the drink.

his lips are sealed, but an eager expression on his face is enough to tell everything. he walks away from the outside patio of the cafe and immediately goes to the direction of the stairs.

kyle stops his pace as soon as he realizes he's taking the lead, turning his head back afterwards to wait for noah.

"y-y-you know, we don't have that much t-time left," he stammers.

lips were pursed with hazel eyes directly staring at noah, waiting for him to move. a lot can be read between the lines with uneasy movements and impatient shifting, which was easy to interpret for noah despite the lack of direct communication from kyle.

the sun was about to set, and it only takes a while before it completely goes out of the view once it has started.

"the day really escapes ya when you're having fun, huh?" noah says, scratching his head as he sees the sky's mellowing sag.

he catches up quick. a couple of spritely kicks brings him to kyle's side, shopping bags colliding clumsily together like exeggcute.

as they trek up the stairs, noah bounds up each step. one foot surpasses the immediate step as he goes up by two-step intervals.

"are you nervous or something, man?" he laughs. awkwardly, with one leg stretched out to a taller ledge, he looks to kyle, "we can fly back home from the roof, right?"

he whips his head around, packing more dynamic action in one swift motion than the last few minutes that led up to this moment.

"you have yourself to blame for that," he tells noah. "you're, like, i don't know, unpredictable."

given the choice of common sense or not, noah always chooses the one that differs from the norm. kyle not sure if it's in the same vein as his pokemon trying to impress him, but he still cannot get it in his system, regardless of whether he can predict it or not.

in a quieter voice, he continues.

"...but i'm down with whatever."

the sun continues to sag. like a canvas made too wet by vermillion paint. now outside, on the sunset-soaked roof, they're afforded a rare moment of privacy.

nearby, the slight whir of an old vending machine can be heard. a ledyba rustles out of the planters. departs with a quick beating of wings.

"stand by the railing." noah says, pulling his phone out. he sets their shopping bags down.

despite his request, noah is quick to format kyle into the proper place. the proper pose. he tucks in, stretching his cell out in camera mode.

"do your most like, stupid face. let's take a silly pic."

noah suddenly thrusts him in a position for a picture, their backs facing against the sunset. it makes for a good photo for social media, he has to admit, albeit a bit too cliche. at least the setting makes up for it.

"a-all right," he mutters as he gets in position.

as he feels the railings on his back, he shifts uncomfortably until he gets a good spacing beside noah. with the instructions he was given, he needs a good amount of them for it to be acceptable.

his smile turns to one that barely appears on a normal setting, mimicking one of noah's usual fuckboy expressions. he did say the most stupid face he can muster, after all.

noah notices the subtle mockery- and he converts his goofy look into one of the same. however, he sneaks in an accessory into the corner of the photo as the camera button is tapped.

"cute. wanna see, man?" the gym leader laughs.

he turns his phone toward kyle, and in the corner of their photo's frame, noah's fingers clutch a ring.

surprisingly excited, kyle hurries to look at the phone screen. his eyes quickly look at noah, and upon seeing his expression, goes to his, comparing the two.

"it doesn't work if you use your normal camera face," he humors, chuckling.

it takes him a while look at the rest of the photo. the smile slowly turns awkward as he faces noah.

no words come out as he stare at the same fingers that hold the accessory. shock and disbelief fill his head. complacency and pessimism has not prepared of the most obvious result this might have.

kyle continues to find possibilities of what other action the presence of the ring entails, but his mind shuts down, waiting for noah to speak.

noah descends to a knee. fingers hold the ring delicately between their tips as if they had just plucked the sweetest flower. in the quiet of a mauville sunset, noah's confident visage wobbles into a furious blush.

a hand rubs the back of his neck. there, a slight scratching of the scalp.

"with the meteoroid coming and all thought there'd be no better time than now." noah says, voice heavy with the drumming weight of his heart. "so, will you marry me?"

he laughs after.

"before we all die."

kyle's fluster quickly softens. his face was still red, but he does his best to maintain a composure. he can break down later at home.

"of course!"

he drags him up from his knees with his arm before pulling him close for a kiss. both of his squeeze noah with a lover's embrace, excitement powering up the champion into liveliness.

at that point, he quickly forgets about the ring. the promise was most important, being the only thing that echoes in his head at the moment. the only reason he lets go was to correct noah's statement.

"and what do you mean die? that's not an option now. we're wearing the label longer to get full value of your ring money!"

in a typical kyle manner, he skirts around the sentimental parts with a less honest, more pragmatic wording.

the kiss greets him on a sea of jitters. noah is carbonated. bubbling up from the toes all the way to his throat as he clings to the other as if holding the world together.

he laughs and realizes he's teary-eyed. a finger flicks away a wet gem.

"if you say so." noah says. "okay, um," a nervous laugh leaves him, "never done this before. let's get the full value of this on your finger now..."

noah cradles his hand warm. shakily guides the ring onto kyle's finger until it fits snug.

emotions are at an all-time high as noah fits the ring in kyle's finger.

he has never imagined himself in this scenario for most of his life. his heart rate rises as he can feel the palpitations physically. his face reds up, and eventually, it explodes on him.

a small spark bursts from the finger on a scale weaker than most pokemon attacks. while relatively harmless, it does cause panic when it accidentally throws the ring off.

"fuck!"

his hand quickly grabs for it before taking noah's hand with it and pushing it on his finger himself. he clasps noah's hand on top of his with another hand, palm feeling the ring finally on his possession.

"it's on! i'm not taking it off!"
