A five hundred and ninety millilitre cup of white chocolate mocha with two espresso shots, two percent milk, and extra whipped cream rests on the window-side table that Ceri has claimed as her own. For the most part, the Sawsbucks café near Slateport University’s campus is pleasantly empty, the grand majority of customers being ones to leave as soon as they get their orders.

Ceri has papers to read, and so, an online version of the latest issue of the Nature scientific journal lies open on her tablet, eyes of a warm russet shade reading sentence after sentence while manicured fingers reach for her oversized cup of coffee.

nagi's laptop is a geriatric, wheezing shell of parts that rattle if he shakes them. so, when it freezes up halfway through a sentence, nagi mutters a testy not again and does what he always does: shake it like a large, unwieldy metal maraca until it starts working again.

but it doesn’t — and it's only after the failure of his miracle cure that he notices that he’s not the only person in the sawsbucks experiencing technical issues.

there aren’t many people milling in the store at this time of the day. of these stragglers, almost every single one of them is looking, bewildered down in the devices in their hands. nagi eyes drift across them, cataloguing each: an unresponsive screen on one; an endlessly scrolling display on another; one poor, bewildered soul whose phone appears to be typing out a message consisting entirely of pppppppp.

“huh,” he intones, just as the woman a seat down from him says, in a similar tone of bafflement, “weird.”

he glances over at the flickering screen of her tablet, and down at the unblinking text cursor on his own. once is chance, twice is a pattern; a whole coffeeshop full of malfunctioning electronics is bad news.

idly considering getting the hell out of dodge, nagi’s forefinger taps, once, on the spacebar — and his laptop starts screaming. it starts with the cacophonous, high-pitched beeping of the low battery warning, and like a stone in pond, it ripples out to the other devices in the confines of the store, until everything is chiming at once, a dissonant, screeching chorus of ringtones and alarms that pierces through his ears.

“...shit,” he says. another understatement.
