Well, spending some time in Fortree had certainly offered her some opportunities. And now she figured, well with all of the opportunities she has had she might as well do something about the severe lack of proof for the work that she and her Pokémon had put in. Naturally, she concluded that acquiring a Gym Badge was in order, and as luck would have it Fortree City had its very own Gym.

And so dressed in one her of more casual business suits, she would make her way over to the Gym. She did a cursory search on the PokéWeb, trying to find what information she could about the place. Though for all the minimum effort she invested all she learned was that it seemingly specialized in flying types and other Pokémon capable of flight.

What little knowledge she had learned would just have to do, for it did not take long for her to reach the sign-up desk of the Gym. She quickly filled out all the paperwork that needed to be filled. Read over all the options there were. She took a moment to ponder the options. Traditional, and non-traditional. The latter sounded too much like she’d be at the mercy of whatever whims the leader had upon this given day. So, since she was here to prove her worth as a trainer she picked traditional. She was then given a few more choices. For one the style, of which she picked One versus One, then followed by how many Pokémon were to do battle, and here she had to do a bit of thinking. In the end, taking into account the flying nature of her opponent, she had two Pokémon which she believed ready, and one which sorely lacked needed a potentially humbling experience.

With all the bureaucracy finished she was led to the arena. And as she walked steadily towards the arena, a smile spread upon her lips as she felt a tingling sensation in her appearing in her stomach, she didn’t know what she was about to see when she would step out onto the arena, but that didn’t matter. Finally, she was about to do something she had only dreamed of doing, partake in the League Challenge.

Was she related to his friend? That was a definite maybe but he’d have to look into that later.

He… Alexei really needed to brush up more on his traditional battling method, because well—can you fault the guy for having a heavy preference towards non-traditional challenges that were more than definitely out of this world (for starters)?

“Can I ask, before we begin,” he called out from the other side of the open-air arena, once all of the avians who were itching for a fight came out and settled around the perimeter.

“You related to a friend of mine? With the surname and all.”

Her excitement reached a boiling point as she stepped out onto the Arena. She almost jumped in, but somehow just barely controlled herself. Luckily the normalcy of whom she presumed to be the Gym Leader, grounded her just a little bit.

She looked mildly surprised when the question reached her. Who could he be speaking about? Most if not all of her family didn’t go in the League circles, unless. “Are you perhaps referring to Lau… I mean Lars?” Given how rarely she saw and spoke with the guy she did have to remind herself not to use his given name. “Yeah, he is my cousin.” She figured there’d be no harm in admitting how they were related.

She took a quick peek at all the avian Pokémon who had settled nearby, wondering if either of those would be used today. “Well, I am ready when you are.” She grabbed the Pokéball of one of the three Pokémon she intended to use today. With a quick throw into the air, the Pokéball released the Giant Stone Serpent onto the Arena. She figured starting with the one with the highest probability of losing would be wisest.

The Onix smugly looked down upon the Gym Leader whom it towered above. A rumbling growl emanated from it. “Nix, do not underestimate him or his Pokémon,” Elinor warned her Pokémon, knowing very well that the Onix thought very well of the puny human in front of him.

Aha.

Shame, if he wasn’t gay as the day was long he’d have possibly asked him more about her, however Alexei had already decidedly pitched his flag on the same side of the field he was born in so there was that…

And right then and there the first Pokémon that came out from her side of the field was an Onix. Quite not like @mattis’s Scoria, but close enough…

“You get first move!” he called across the field, as he summoned a Gyarados on his own side of the field—because knowing her, she would definitely have an answer to this Pokémon of his.

Hera, the pissy Gyarados let out a loud roar, attempting to Intimidate the Onix.

Talking could be done after the battle. For now, that was her focus. Her Onix stared smugly. But his facial expression changed the moment he laid eyes upon the most intimidating serpentine woman he had seen in a long while. Kind of reminded him of his mother were it not for the fact she was blue, and a water/flying type. He tried to resist the intimidation, but it was obvious from how the smugness faded that it was working on him.

That’s a Water/Flying-type. Dangerous but doable. Elinor thought. Just have to not get hit. “Nix, Stone Edge!” A brown earthy huge shimmered over the Onix for a brief moment before it slammed its tail onto the ground. From the point where it touched the arena floor, spikes of large rocks began to shoot up quickly moving in the direction of the Gyarados.

And as Elinor watched the battle began. She felt a strange beating in her chest. As if she was out running. But it wasn’t a bad feeling her smile grew wide from the excitement of finally battling. This was real now. She had made the first move and now she just had to pray she would be able to respond to what was to come.

There we go, right for the weakness—

“Aha,” was all he had time to say, and while the Gyarados was surprised at the sudden outburst of rocks erupting out of the ground, she’d made to stretch out to full height before roaring again.

While some of the spiked rocks did hit her, it was but a flesh wound, as the roaring noise served to summon something—

Alexei realized what Hera was up to before he heard the rumbling in the sky, quickly zipping up his jacket and throwing his hoodie up as a torrential Rain Dance began to pour across the battlefield.

And there she goes, setting things up… but I doubt the Onix is going to go flying, unless… he thought to himself as the downpour came down in earnest.

The attack hit or at least parts of it did. But it seemed the Gyarados were none the worse for it. Some might call it barely a flesh wound, but Elinor would call it rather impressive. She feared that her Onix wouldn’t quite be able to muster the same constitution towards damage, maybe if she had made it hold an Eviolite, but alas she had not. It seemed like the Blue serpent purposely took some of it, just to provide it with an opportunity to set up some sort of move. Elinor wondered which kind.

But it didn’t take long for her to realize which weather move had been used when the torrential rain bathed her in its monsoon-like amount of water. But as she stood there cold and shivering, she realized something. The opposing trainer hadn’t ordered their Pokémon to do that, it simply did it. Her eyes then befell Onix, who hadn’t budged, awaiting an order. The realization would be obvious in her facial expression.

She took a deep breath and then said. “Nix, don’t wait for my orders just do your thing, and I will budge in if necessary.” Though the rain did its best to dampen the sound of her voice. The Onix nodded. She would have to have the courage to trust that they had trained enough for this.

The Onix wasn’t about to just wait around, now that he wasn’t limited by the time waiting between orders he would dive straight into the ground, digging himself quite the hole as he went beneath the field of the Arena, almost swimming through the ground as only a rock-type could. He would swim around for a bit wondering where to pop up, to have enough of a shot at hitting the Flying-type before it might’ve taken to the ground. He decided an ambush would be in order, and soon shoot up from behind the water/flying-type, hoping to get the surprise attack on it.

Now that the rain was coming down, he caught sight of the Onix before it suddenly—tunneled into the ground?

Oh, dear, he thought, wondering if the other would realize what had happened. In the meantime, though, the Gyarados looked around, wondering where her opponent had disappeared off to.

Either way, she would get ready, and began going through the motions of a Dragon Dance, to get ready whenever the Onix appeared from where it had hidden itself underground.

I wonder if she’s going to realize it, he continued in the back of his mind.

Elinor shivered in the rain. But she tried to focus as Onix decided it had a plan. She watched it dig into the ground figuring it would do some ambush attack using the Rock-type move…

The Gyarados performed some manner of weird dragon-like dance in the rain. Powering itself up in some manner. And while doing so what was before a small confident smile, turned worried. She just realized something. Dig wasn’t a Rock-type move.

“Nix Don’t!” She shouted, but just as the words left her mouth the Onix burst forth in a spray of wet ground and stone, right behind the Gyarados as it tried to land upon the sea-serpent in a ground-type infused attack. Hoping to pin the Gyarados down so their speed would be irrelevant.

Elinor could only stand and watch in horror as the events unfolded, for her Onix had not heard her command or didn’t care either way it seemed certain in its belief that this would work. But little did it know…

And then, there it was.

The Onix had burst out of the ground and tried to ram its entire rocky body against the Gyarados, who was still roaring despite the torrential downpour—however, the fact that Dig was a Ground-type attack meant it didn’t do jack squat against the dual-type.

Which left Hera with a wide-open opportunity; and despite the fact that the downpour was still going on all around them, instead of blasting a column of air (Hurricane) the Gyarados instead went for the next-best thing—a Hydro Pump attack!

The sudden powerful blast of water came rocketing towards the Onix—who knew what would happen next?!

Onix too caught up in the masterwork that was its plan didn’t realize the futility of it before it was too late. The blast of water hit head-on, pushing him down on the rocky terrain and tumbling him back. A low rumbling emerged from the Onix, maybe a groan of pain, for the latter became apparent when it tried to rise from the ground. As if it no longer held any strength in its body, it fell to the ground once more clearly about to fall unconscious.

“That’s enough Nix.” She didn’t want him to continue the fight when a single attack put him in such a state. Not that he could even if she wanted him to. She retried the Rocky snake back into its Pokéball before retrieving one of the others she signed up. This time she knew it would have a type advantage. “Time to shine Eele!” She threw the Pokéball into the rainy air and watched as the Eelektross manifested on the battlefield.

The Eelektross stretched in anticipation before watching its Opponent. “No need to wait for a command, just do your thing!” Elinor commanded. The Blue and Yellow patterned EleFish Pokémon nodded and went to work. Electricity crackled around it before a bolt of pure electricity shot forward towards the Gyarados.

While the Onix did go down, the next one was going to be much more difficult—and it was a Pokémon he recognized from home!

…and a particularly deadly one, too.

All it took was one singular Thunderbolt attack to effectively ~~cook~~ deep-fry the Gyarados, and he quickly recalled the fallen dual-type, before whistling once—wondering if his next Pokémon heard it over the downpour.

But wait, since the summoner of the weather had been knocked out, the clouds were turning back to a lighter sort of gray as the rainfall decreased in intensity—and this time, a strange-looking avian hit the stage; it was his Xatu, appropriately nicknamed ‘Set’.

Before he could even say anything, the new dual-type then launched a chunk of rainbow-colored Psychic energy at the Eelektross.

Nope, not Confuse Ray!

Torrential rain is now pouring across the battlefield! (4 / 5)

Gyarados has been knocked out! Xatu is now out on the field!

Elinor stood amazed. Mouth agape as if she didn’t believe what she just saw. Was Eele truly this powerful or was it just a combination of various circumstances combining to make her look so. They were about to find out.

Eele the Eelektross watched hungrily as the next opponent came onto the stage. Rain slightly decreasing in intensity, surely halting soon enough. Knowing an attack was imminent, she was ready to dodge, alas maybe she was a bit too slow in doing so as she felt the gracing of the psychic beam against her left arm.

Still, a mere flesh wound was not about to halt her from counterattacking. Her reserves of electricity were a bit low, and so allowing those to restore seemed a better plan, therefore plan B had to be enacted. She began to glow a silvery-white hue, and within seconds orbs of the same color manifested on her sides before hardening into large boulders which she sent flying into a Rock Slide towards the Xatu with a wave of her arms.

Since his next Pokémon was a dual-Psychic type, he knew that Set would be able to handle himself without much assistance.

The good news here was that the Psychic attack was able to glance a blow on the Eelektross. The bad news was that there was an incoming avalanche of boulders—

Thankfully, the Xatu kept his head screwed on, watching the cascade of boulders and dancing around most of the falling rocks. There were a few boulders that managed to strike the avian, however the dual-type did not pay it mind.

‘twas just a flesh wound, after all.

The Xatu’s eyes flashed momentarily, as he set up a Future Sight attack—for now he would play the part of a target that kept his unyielding, unblinking stare on the Eelektross.

Eele watched the Xatu dance about the rocks. Though it noticed a few of them striking, it didn’t harm the bird enough. Frustrated and unnerved by the way the bird kept looking at it. It wondered what it was planning. She surely couldn’t feel the effects of an attack, and there was nothing visibly coming toward her. Odd and unnerving indeed.

She figured there was no reason to let it stand there and stare, its annoying deep gaze upon her as if it peered into her future. It angered her. Eelektross charged forwards hoping to be able to latch onto the Xatu before releasing all the build-up Electricity in a huge flashy DISCHARGE, though it would do so regardless if it couldn’t, but just came close enough.
