The moment the wall fell apart, and they were ushered onward—the heat only continued to get worse and worse.

(Surely, he wasn’t suited for a place as hot as this. Even hot springs made him do a double-take, but only when he was given ample warning would he be alright… on the most part.)

“It feels like we’ve traveled into the—” he trailed off, biting his lip because the next words that were about to escape him were literally irreverent. Why did that particular line from a certain favorite movie of his suddenly come to mind?!

In case you were curious, it was the Devil’s Anus from Thor: Ragnarok.

Tapping on the drum reverberated the noise right back—unobstructed by the wall… what they saw beyond was something… oh, shit.

“I know you’re going to get a kick out of this,” he continued in Memo’s direction, pointing at all the pools of lava. “However. You know.”

The Garchomp beside him didn’t mind the heat, though…

One more tap on the drum, and the source of the noise revealed itself—a niche literally all the way across the room, and if he squinted even harder, he thought he saw someplace to put the literal hot rock he was holding in—

Before something came dropping down from the ceiling, which made him shriek a little bit and swear.

“Oh, come on!”

Considering the fact that he could reach into his pockets and pull—he quickly recalled the Garchomp, before releasing Hera, his temperamental Gyarados. Hell, even she recoiled at the sudden heat.

“Cool us down, go! No, not Rain Dance—use the more powerful one!” he shouted as he held up his arm to protect against the heat haze—

As the Gyarados then began to blast the incoming Heatran with a Hydro Pump!

“Can—can you give me covering fire? I have to fly over there to where that is!” he continued as he pointed towards the opposite side of the cave, still holding the molten rock before climbing onto the Gyarados who then took to the ‘air’ as she began peppering the strange ‘fire spider’ with as much water as she could!


Gyarados used Hydro Pump! (150 power)

“Center of the earth?” Memo supplied, knowing it probably wasn’t what Alex was going to say but feeling like it was an apropos comparison, anyway.

Farhan presses forward and Memo falls in step behind him, recalling Tumsi and whistling Oona down to his side-- or as close to his side as the errant Linoone would go, her chaotic energy causing her to rush up and down, jumping over sleepy Graveller and dodging around small pools of lava.

Their path undulated until they cross under a natural archway and enter a cavern. The drumbeat resonates off an altar in the rear of the space. There is also, of course, the Heatran, whose heavy steps are making the entire cavern shake.

Alex’s Gyarados fills much of the breathable room, pelting the ceiling and the Heatran with hydro pump that quickly fills the cavern with hot steam. “Careful, the steam might burn you even more than the lava,” Memo cautioned, though they were soon in the thick of battle despite his warning.

Alex asked for cover fire, so that’s what he was going to get, Bazelgeuse lashing out with aqua tail while Oona fired off a thunder in quick succession.

Okay, so maybe firing water at a superheated clump of magma was a big mistake as—

Clouds of steam erupted the moment the water made contact with the hot rock, sizzling as it burned. The Gyarados roared out of confusion, because holy shit, what the fuck was going on?!

How was this fair?!

The Heatran (not that he knew what it was called) bellowed, unamused that it had been the target of attacks—and therefore retaliated with a powerful, extremely hot, bubbling whirlwind of Magma Storm—

“Oh, come on!” he yelled as he ducked his head behind the Gyarados’s, who roared once more and let rip with another Hydro Pump in an attempt to dissipate the swirling tornado borne of lava.

“Gah!”

Alex’s Gyarados was firing on all cylinders, pumping out massive quantities of water by the minute. Likewise, Bazelgeuse kept whipping her aqua tail back and forth, striking at the Heatran’s legs, aiming to take it off at the knee-- is that what the single joint in its leg was called? The knee?

They were going to need a little bit more firepower, so Memo flexed his fingers and called forth his Togekiss, jumping onto the flying creature’s back.

“Here!” He called, reaching down to Alex, for the stone or for Alex himself. “Our team’ll kep them busy and we can fly across to put the stone in the-- in the thingy!”

Very articulate, Memo, very good job.

Oona drove a headbutt into the Heatran’s forehead as Puck fired off an aura sphere to assist.

“You’ve got to be kidding me!” he continued, the tone of his voice going higher and higher, to the point it was almost fever pitch.

Realizing that he was not going to be able to make the trip while the goddamned… flaming spider thing… was causing a lot of trouble, he then decided to summon some more additional firepower.

A Mantine and a… a Cramorant made their appearance as well; while he summoned his Braviary at the same time before he made a very quick yet albeit dangerous aerial transfer from the Gyarados to the Braviary.

Now that there were three Pokémon out on his side of the field, there was only one thing left to do.

“Come on!” he yelled as he reached for Memo’s arm to pull him onto the avian’s back before the three Pokémon (the Cramorant was balanced on the Gyarados’s head) opened fire with three separate instances of Hydro Pump, that being the strongest Water-type attack (which was not Hydro Cannon) available to them.

“Kyouya, FLY!” he yelled as he flattened himself; with a loud screech the avian shot across the superheated space; whipping the mist, steam and haze aside before seeing the ‘altar’ notch and him literally almost butterfinger’ing the damned thing, attempted to slide the hot potato rock into the slot where it was supposed to go…


Gyarados, Cramorant and Mantine used Hydro Pump! (150 power x 3 = 450)

FIERY DRUM QUEST

EVENTUALLY, the Heatran is subdued by your attacks. The cave walls are scarred with gashes from their claws where they have spider-crawled. From their wounds, boiling blood oozes over partially melted steel.

Within this crimson chamber, the sulfur and sweat of battle accompanies the immense heat. With the magma stone slotted into the altar, the magma is calm too. It is clear that the Heatran are available for capture; perhaps, it is encouraged to do so, for the young Lava Dome Pokemon seems hurt enough to require proper recuperation.


OWNER OF THE FIERY DRUM () RECEIVES A HEATRAN.
YOU MAY DETERMINE ITS ABILITY & MOVESET LIKE A GACHAPON POKEMON.


Eventually, the magma begins to surge once more. As and escape with FARHAN through another route and out of the mountain, the magma stone melts as the altar is overtaken.
