Warm. Too warm. Even if it was the middle of winter, even if recent events had altered Hoenn’s weather for the foreseeable future, the supposedly tropical region was still much warmer than the weather Tam had come to expect and know. Did it bother him? Make him regret his decision to move away from Icirrus City? No, but it was different, and different was alright sometimes.

Although, alright as it may have been, the wave of cool air that greeted him when entering the Lilycove ranger headquarters was pleasant indeed, and if Tam were the sort of person to wonder about such details, he would’ve questioned if they couldn’t afford heating to adjust the place to a temperature Hoennians apparently preferred or if Lilycove rangers were particularly fond of the cold for one reason or another.

Shame that the question didn’t even cross his mind.

He approached the front desk, calm as ever, and when meeting the gaze of the receptionist, a simple explanation was spoken:

Today was another day—thank fuck he’d already done away with all the paperwork that had landed on his desk (and there was way too much of it that had piled up the past few weeks).

His boots were up on the desk and he was puffing away at his vape, chewing on a caramel square as he did so before he heard the intercom buzz.

“Alright, send him in.”

Which literally meant he had less than five seconds to swing his boots off the table and put the vape out (regrettably) before grabbing the personnel file that was on his desk and riffling through it.

The tin of caramel squares was still open, though, as he reached for another piece and began chewing on it.

A lot could be said about a person judging by the state of their place of work, but admittedly, Tam had never been the sort of person to pay attention to such details, and to him, judging Laurence Anderson was of no interest at all. Nevertheless, the assault on the senses that was the scent of the Head Ranger’s electronic cigarette was noticed when entering the office, the Unovan’s nose wrinkling for a single second before his expression returned to neutrality and his gaze met that of his new boss.

”Anderson, yeah?” Acting polite for the sole sake of acting polite didn’t suit Tam. He wasn’t here to dance around topics, he was here to get a job done. ”Fawley. Looking forward to working with you.”

That much was true, and a hand was offered for the Head Ranger to shake, even if there was no smile to accompany his words.

“Yeah, although—everyone around here calls me Lars,” he began as he returned the handshake. “We do away with some formalities here, especially when it comes to addressing each other by name. Makes people feel more comfortable.”

At least there wasn’t anything piled on the sitting area between the desk and the door.

“Want a caramel?” he continued as he tilted his head in the direction of the open tin.

Either way…

He would still wait for the other to give him his first name, just to make sure he wasn’t going to be stepping on any toes or anything.

“How much of your training did you complete before you were transferred here?”

Because he was pretty sure the other wasn’t going to be ready to be handling ‘world-shattering crises’ that had a tendency to happen pretty frequently when this region was concerned.

(Why was Hoenn always on the brink of some disaster, anyway?)

”Lars.” The name was spoken tentatively, as if weighing what it felt like when said by him. To Tam, it was mostly a matter of growing accustomed to the change, since in Unova he had grown all too used to addressing other rangers by their surnames (those whose surnames he had bothered with remembering, that is). It took him all but five seconds to adapt to this change, and once those five seconds passed, he gave Laurence Anderson the response that was perhaps to be expected:

”Feel free to call me Tam, then.”

He could have probably seen that information in Tam’s own file, but Tam didn’t really think of this, nor of the fact that information regarding his training and time as a ranger was also among those pages.

The offer was accepted, taking a caramel square from the open tin once sitting down. A strange choice for a snack to enjoy while working, but the sweet taste of caramelised sugar was a pleasant one, and he quietly allowed it to melt in his mouth while considering the question asked.

”The standard. I was a ranger for a couple of years in Unova.” Obvious information, but it was then that an eyebrow raised just so slightly, his gaze holding that of the Head Ranger. ”Although I’m guessing ‘the standard’ doesn’t really apply to Hoenn, does it?”

Since, after all, Hoenn was and will always be, fucking crazy.

“You guessed that right,” he continued, unable to hide this grin that spread across his face.

“Surely you’ve heard of many things happening here all at once. It’s like the entire region is a magnet for supernatural disasters left, right, and center.”

The Three-Day War was just the beginning of the damned iceberg. And then there was that crazy-ass purple mist that had a tendency to appear in random places… and then there was the incoming potentially world-ending meteor that he didn’t want to think about because it fucking stressed him out!

“Have you personally seen, or heard of, or even encountered… any Legendary Pokémon?” he asked next.

Because that was going to be part and parcel of everything going on with Hoenn right now.

In the grand spectrum of Tam’s indifference, he actually was not careless enough to choose a region to move to at random and without knowing much about it. Hoenn had actually been picked because all these so-called “disasters” Lars spoke of made it seem as if an interesting place, and although just about every single person he had known back in Unova had questioned him and told him going to such a dangerous place was a terrible idea, in the end, Tam did what Tam wanted.

Was he a thrill-seeker, then?

No one would have ever believed it, judging by the neutral and almost bored look he gave. One that existed in stark contrast with the words spoken:

”Yep, so I’ve heard. Sounds like a mess.”

But, was a mess not much better than monotony?
[break][break]
Now, what did get a proper reaction out of him was the mention of legendary pokémon. There was no awe, there was no wonder, but there was confusion and the furrowing of blond brows. ”Hmm… Not that I know of… How do you know if a pokémon is legendary or not?”

He knew the term, of course, but weren’t those just really strong and really rare pokémon? If so, maybe a battle against one would be fun…

As was probably obvious, Tam wasn’t one for myths and all of that…

“I’d suggest getting reacquainted again with rough terrain and bad weather conditions, because in the aftermath of all the shit that’s going down, it helps to always be quick on your feet no matter the situation,” he remarked as he grabbed another caramel square and popped it into his mouth.

And then, the other’s reaction to Legendary Pokémon.

“As for that question, do you know any tales, or stories that have Pokémon mentioned in them that don’t sound familiar, or aren’t that touched on across all known databases that exist in this day and age?” he continued, watching the other for any visible reaction.

Like, say… Articuno for starters.

There was a brief cackle in the back of his head for a few moments, but he kept his stare on the other, watching his reaction.

Thankfully, despite Tam’s ever too calm and neutral demeanour, ’being quick on his feet’ happened to be something he excelled at, perhaps because with his lack of interest also came an unusual ability to be unfazed by most things in life. Everything has its perks, no? A silver lining and all that..

And yet, quick on his feet as he may have been, at that moment he found himself pausing for a few seconds – as if he really had to think if he had ever heard any tales of legendary pokémon or not. Which, admittedly, was rather crazy, considering the fact that…

”I grew up by Dragonspiral Tower. I always heard all sorts of stories about that place, some of them with strange pokémon…” There was a shrug, because all those stories had vague and fuzzy details in his head. He just never cared to remember. ”I’ve heard of Arceus
and all that. Probably know more legendary pokémon by name than the stories about them.”

There had been mentions here and there, especially after moving to Hoenn, but the lore surrounding such legends was something Tam cared little for. Their power mattered more.

”I’ve never actually seen one, though.”

If only he had known he was speaking to the avatar of one of said legendary pokémon.

“Well, you’ll find a lot of the stories that you may or may not fully remember to be… very much real, at least around these parts.”

And don’t get him started on how the hell a legendary bird from another region had been found all the way in another region that was not its home base. How the world works in strange ways, doesn’t it?

“I can add onto that, just have a more open mind when it comes to these fables and tales, because at the center of all of them, there’s always a grain of truth behind the stories.”

At the mention of the church of Arceus, he balked for a few seconds.

Hah, yeah, about that… he thought to himself.

“There may be weird stories about religion and all that, some surrounding legendaries, but—yeah, just keep an open mind for any tales and fables you hear around here. They tend to come up a lot, and some of them have even been sighted.”

(Was he alluding to something? Maybe.)

He then slid something across the table—a calling card that had his details on it.

“Memorize the details on that as soon as you can.”

Was it the end to their meeting? For now, yes.

Because he was sure that they were going to meet again somewhere very, very soon.
