[break][break] not that callie really knows anything about them. she'd only been to a festival like this maybe once or twice in her life, and that had been when she was too young to remember. before astra had taken her in her care again.

[break][break] this time, danny doesn't miss — though he must be distracted or something because his axe doesn't quite make it's mark. it makes it easy for callie to beat him — her axe lodging just slightly left of his, in the inner circle. ten more points.

[break][break] "looks like i win." she turns to him with a smirk, before blinking. "wait, what do i win?"

[break][break] in her eagerness to compete, she'd forgot to set the terms.

well, that's two to her and zero to him. figuring it best to call it quits, he lowers his last remaining axe, retiring from the very competitive sport of axe-throwing.[break][break]

which sounds really vague so he figures it best to narrow it down. the last thing he wants is to get asked to jump in the lake.[break][break]

"what do you like? food? drinks? a giant stuffed bewear?"

"the festival's hosted by this group of larpers. you ever heard of larping?"[break][break]

he points at a particular booth that contains racks of different outfits and equipment.[break][break]

"live action role-playing. you basically wear a costume and pretend to be in a fantasy world. like father danny."

he offers her a hand and she hesitates — just for a heartbeat. it's a heartbeat that no one else would notice. no one, at least, that didn't know her.

[break][break] his hand feels warm in hers as he leads her through the festival. she grins at him, her laughter filling up the space between them. "larping? no, no i don't think i've heard of that before." it's hard for her to not snicker — in her defense, she does try.

[break][break] "so, do you "larp" on the regular? is this your —" with her other hand, she waves at him, as if gesturing to his entire outfit. "whole character? do you get a backstory too?"

too enthused to even notice her snicker, danny continues without a single care in the world, more than happy to share his passion.[break][break]

"i do when i get the time to, yeah! father danny is one of my characters. he's supposed to turn into a battle-ready cleric eventually but i always like to flesh their backstories out prior."[break][break]

festivals like these give him a great opportunity to do so. he can write pages upon pages of backstory but they mean nothing unless he truly feels it.[break][break]

they arrive at the booth containing racks of different outfits and equipment.[break][break]

his expression is relatively innocent; mischievous, maybe, but still innocent.[break][break]

"i'll help you make yours right now. after that, we can pick your outfit."

she had been joking, but the honest and wholehearted way that he responded was... kind of cute. not that she was going to tell him that.

[break][break] "what's father's danny's backstory?"

[break][break] this time, her tone is less skeptical and more curious. she can't relate exactly, but she understands being so involved in a world that she wants to just keep digging. it reminds he of that mmo that she's been getting into as of late. vaguely, she wonders if DANNY HALL plays video games.

[break][break] she blinks when she realizes where he's taken her. scoundrel!

[break][break] "you're sneaky," she says with a huff, releasing his hand so that she can fold her arms across her chest. still, she doesn't mind too much. it's not like @sole or paxton concordas are here to see it, anyway, so there's no need to be embarrassed. callie peers curiously as the colorful fabrics before turning to him.

[break][break] "fine. what are my choices? do i get to pick a class? and —" she smirks. "tell me more about your backstory."

danny definitely plays video games. oh, how he's spent nights playing games with nagi miwa until dawn only to do the same thing the next night.[break][break]

her reaction, while expected, is also cute. it makes him smile as he looks at her, ignoring the colorful fabrics for now.[break][break]

"my backstory is that i'm a local villager, once bound for great things only to fall into despair after my parents died. the church saved me, and in turn, i've devoted my life to helm, god of protection."[break][break]

he's definitely put a lot of thought and work into this.[break][break]

"you have a few classes to pick from," he gestures over to the board behind the counter which has pictures of the different classes. "i think the fighter class suits you. or ranger. something martial. strong."

"ooh. a man of god, you say?" her lips turn upwards into a smirk as he unwinds his tale. quite the tragic backstory — though it's to be expected for these sorts of things. her eyes glance towards the fabric, wondering which class she'll pick.

[break][break] DANNY HALL seems to have put some thought into the decision too, despite the short-time they've spent together. either he's an expert at judging people or he is just a really good guesser, because callie nearly preens with pride at his words.

[break][break] "you think i'm strong huh? what other things do you think about me?" her words are teasing, eyes glimmering, but before he can respond she turns, pointing to one of the classes in particular.

[break][break] "i'll be a paladin. you'll need a knight to protect you from monsters."

while it's normally really easy to tease danny and even easier for him to fall for it, this time he's too distracted with filling out the rest of her sign-up sheet before handing it back to the staff.[break][break]

he's practically beaming only to chuckle at her words.[break][break]

"any dps is only as strong as their support."[break][break]

reaching across the counter, he grabs a sword and shield and hands both over to her.[break][break]

"don't worry. i got your back. now come on, we got some noobs to slay."

"true," she relents, with a light laugh.

[break][break] she can account for the times that she'd been stuck in the end of a dungeon, mobs all around her, and her healer fainted. it was absolutely the worst.

[break][break] as he hands the shield and sword over to her, callie grabs it though she fumbles it a bit. their fingers brush as she grabs the metal, feeling a bit unusual carrying such old equipment. guns, sure, she could handle. but a sword and shield?

[break][break] well, it wasn't a medieval fair for nothing.

danny's more familiar with old-school weapons like swords and rapiers far more than he is with a gun and it shows in how easily he handles the dagger. what priest doesn't have a dagger?[break][break]

smirking, he points at a couple of teenagers who look like they're up to no good. they're all dressed as goblins.[break][break]

danny does a cool flick with his dagger before tossing it at one of them. they pretend to die, faking it rather well while the others turn to charge at danny and callie.

[break][break] callie blinks with surprise as DANNY HALL flicks a dagger towards the unsuspecting teens. one falls and her heart starts with worry, before she realizes that it's all fake.

[break][break] as another kid comes rushing towards her with a fake sword, she laughs as she throws her shield up.
