no, blaziken isn't able to keep up with the speed. it grows weary and disoriented as it attempts to track the oncoming attack. even as trained as it is, it won't be able to dodge this one.[break][break]

the attack never connects. it clashes into a shield of PROTECT, conjured up by an unknown source that soon becomes known.[break][break]

a banette hiding in theo's shadow finally emerges, slithering free only to flip off dhelmise and totodile with a TAUNT.[break][break]

this buys enough time for blaziken to lunge back before throwing an AERIAL ACE at the totodile.

[attr="class","skullbody"]No, damnit! He couldn't just lose the offensive momentum to a cheap trick! The second Blaziken had a chance to catch its breath, Isaac'd have to start wearing it down all over again. For this reason, as soon as the Bannette popped out, Isaac cracked another pair of Pokeballs on the ground. The first was Vivi, still a little shaken up but eager to get back into the fray and prove herself. The second was Isaac's Cubone, Duster, who quietly observed the battle as it unfolded.[break][break]

It was a good thing Isaac made this choice, too. Otherwise, he'd have promptly lost the numbers game. Watson's guard dropped at Banette's taunt, and as he was busy serving up a Donald Duck esque rant at the puppet Blaziken was able to hit him with a perfect precision dive. The croc went flying, leaving Isaac scrambling to catch the poor thing on the way down.[break][break]

"Duster, Bonemerang!" Isaac called, his Cubone snapping into action and sending a spinning bone flying at Blaziken. The cumbersome projectile would probably be fairly easy to dodge the first time. Hell, since Blaziken knew it was a Bonemerang, it wouldn't be too hard to dodge it a second time, either.[break][break]

But would he be expecting it to come a third and fourth time? Eevee's Copycat would ensure the bones came in a fast, seamless barrage, aimed to strike right after Duster's original copy was finished.[break][break]

Of course, Dhelmise wasn't in on this plan. It was far too busy chasing after Bannette, furiously smashing the ground with Power Whips as it tried to run the puppet down. For such a normally unreadable creature, the Taunt sure seemed to get under its skin! Or, er, its algal blooms.

DETECT can only do so much against an onslaught of BONEMERANGS. the numbers edge out the fight in isaac's favor, and it is with a final effort that blaziken surges forward to throw a CLOSE COMBAT at the eevee.[break][break]

banette, on the other hand, is having fun being chased after by the POWER WHIPPING dhelmise. it weaves left and right, agile in nature before dipping down into the shadows.[break][break]

when it reappears further behind dhelmise, it lets out a THUNDER that shoots straight at the anchor.

[attr="class","skullbody"]Shit. Even with her being fresh from the fight, a Close Combat like that would take Vivi right out of the fight. Sure, the Blaziken was on its last legs, and Duster would be able to secure the mission from there, but . . .[break][break]

No. Not happening. "Duster, interference!" Isaac said. The Cubone turned to Vivi, picked her up, and Flung her right away from the fight. The Eevee went sailing through the air, only able to watch as the Blaziken's final efforts rained down on the poor Cubone. He tried his best to defend himself, but some serious pepper was being put into this one; such was the force of its blows that Duster's bone was knocked right out of his hand.[break][break]

Blaziken was busy with attacking Duster. Dhelmise was doing its best to distract Banette, even if "distract" in this case meant "bristling up as it was fried by". It was time. "Vivi, finish this!" Isaac called, the Eevee's fur standing up on end and bristling as she copied the Banette's powerful strike. A Thunder tore down from her, crashing right down towards the Blaziken.[break][break]

Yet, just in case it didn't work, Isaac made a run for Duster's bone. It was essential that he keep up pressure on the Blaziken so that it couldn't find a second wind. What better way to do that than to arm himself and swing a Bone Club of his own? Besides, Theo never said he had to use his Pokemon to faint the Blaziken.

the COPIED THUNDER soars across the space only to strike blaziken where it stands. electricity ripples and courses, sending blaziken over the brink as it falls to the ground.[break][break]

at that, another whistle sounds, sending banette back into the shadows.[break][break]

silence falls over them as he approaches.[break][break]

[attr="class","skullbody"]Isaac's sprint eased into a brisk walk as he headed over to the weary Duster, tossing the Cubone his bone. The Cubone had been battered, but he was far from out of the fight, shooting Isaac a curt nod of gratitude. Dhelmise floated down to join them, in remarkably good condition despite having spent so long on the fight. It really avoided the worst of the punishment, didn't it? Finally, Vivi ran circles around the trio, yipping excitedly about her victory.[break][break]

So how did they do, anyway? "Could've done better, could've done worse," Isaac said. "We took a few more losses than would've been ideal. That would've been even tougher in a fair fight. But a mission's no time for a fair fight."[break][break]

"We fought hard and kept the pressure up well, poking at any spots in your guard that opened up. Though I was too focused on keeping the tempo going and making the best of the options I had. Though, even if in a real fight I should've swapped Kurze out, he needed to stay in this time," Isaac said. "He can be . . . aggressive. And proud. He needed to see what it's like fighting when the odds really, really aren't in his favor."[break][break]

As they were speaking, Isaac was backing up towards his motorcycle. Once there, he set a foot against it, as if he'd reached home base in a game of capture the flag. "By the way, since my opponent still has an active Pokemon out, this would be the part where I'd ride off," Isaac said. "Complete the mission, don't waste energy and risk jeopardizing its success by causing needless trouble." Damn, he'd really done his homework today, huh?

"In a real fight, I could tag out, and I-" However, as Isaac started he realized that he could have all six of his Pokemon out and still not be able to pivot to a favorable matchup. He could've done all the right things in a prior engagement, but have someone ambush his half-KO'd team before he could retreat and heal. Hell, he himself could've been in the line of fire, physically unable to get to his team and aid them.[break][break]

"-am gonna have a lot to learn about what a real fight means. Aren't I?."[break][break]

Irritation turned to realization turned to humility. Now, both turned to contemplation. "If the two kept up coordinated hit and run attacks, the Blaziken wouldn't even have the chance to attack without getting smashed in the back before it could build momentum. And Phantom Force seemed like a good idea in theory, but in practice it gave Kurze too much alone time with the Blaziken. Whirlpool should've been the option I stuck to more. With it and Anchor Shot, Dhelmise could've controlled how much Blaziken could move. And while Kurze might be hitting at a major disadvantage, a blade is still a blade. In a real fight, those could be leveraged a lot more dangerously."[break][break]

"Fire's the bigger threat, but more proactive Whirlpool use could blunt it. Fighting's 50/50 odds of major damage or nothing at all; I should've have Dhelmise soak and trap those sorts of blows for Kurze while he struck from behind. And if together the two could get Blaziken in the air, or off its feet, even at a disadvantage they could bring it to a decisive finish."[break][break]

"That all sound about right?" Ugh. Thinking this much on battle strategies hurt his head. Tummyfeels and letting his partners take the wheel were so much easier.
