[attr="class","skullbody"]It's funny. Isaac never really had much interest in the gym challenge previously. God knows if he really wanted to, he had plenty of years to tackle it. The Hoenn of today wasn't a world where ten year olds set out on a quest to be the very best, but at the very least once he was in his late teens he could've given it a start. Still, being some adventuring trainer was always his little brother's deal. Not his. Not for a while now.

That all changed once he'd joined up with Rocket. The last three months had been the busiest in his life. June, especially, had been such a trial by fire. His Pokemon, his body, even his mind had been pushed to their very limits with one trial by fire after the next. It was as if his infamous luck had flared up into overdrive, and it was dragging him along for the ride with no brakes in sight.

If it wasn't going to get easier, then he'd need to get harder.

Most obviously, the Dewford Gym was going to be a test of strength and stamina. The obstacle course was designed to push both the trainer and Pokemon participating until they've used everything they've got in the tank. Then they were supposed to dig back down, find their second wind, and use all of that as well. However, there was a second reason for why Isaac had come here. Of all of his Pokemon, his Dhelmise was the most inscrutable. It had no face to read, was eerily quiet, and exhibited little more than quiet contempt for those in its way. He had closer bonds with the Cubone that arbitrarily started following him around and the Bisharp that tried to kill him, for crying out loud!

Enough was enough. If it was going to take a one-on-one trial to forge that bond, then so be it. Isaac was ready to put himself on the line and finally break the ice. This was what brought him and Dhelmise to Dewford City. The two may've been a pair of misfits, but damnit, they were misfits ready to prove themselves!

This was going to be the hardest trial Isaac had undertaken without the safety of his mask. Most of the chaos he'd undergone the past three months was as Blackjack, the Rocket. But now? He was just Isaac, the Pokemon Trainer. He sighed, turning to his Dhelmise. "Well. Guess we're both ready as we'll ever be, huh?" he asked, to predictably no answer. Oh well. Not like he was expecting different.

With that, he opened the doors to the Dewford Gym and took his first steps into the world of Pokemon training.

The Dewford Gym is a study in space, it seems. A round, circular pool sloshes gently at the center of the room, while the rear wall itself appears to have vanished entirely, enormous bay doors drawn back to reveal the golden beach beyond, followed by the sea shallows, the azure waters dotted with brightly-colored structures and platforms.

Strangely, the activity in the Gym itself seems to be in a bit of a lull. The main floor of the gym - a large, spacious chamber - is dotted about its periphery with various workout machines and weight racks, a handful of which appear to be in use. A gym trainer works a rowing machine, clad in the establishment's signature blue and white, while a middle-aged man - a fisher, judging by his boots - puffs at the treadmill on the opposite side of the floor.

What makes the scene ostensibly odd is the notion that numerous pokémon also make use of the amenities, interspersed between the human patrons. A Rillaboom is currently engaged in a set of pull-ups from a high bar, while a Pangoro nearby reclines on his back, hefting a heavy barbell with relative ease.

Perhaps the most vociferous of these tableaus is the powerfully-built man closest to the door, grinning broadly down at a Scorbunny. The man manipulates a heavy square pad on each hand, giving out a loud whoop as the Scorbunny bounds into the air, delivering three rapid-fire kicks to the left pad before landing easily on his feet.

"Yes, dude, great job! Your accuracy is on point!" Beau grins, shucking one of the pads to the floor and offering the lapine pokémon a high five, which he bounces up to deliver. At the other man's entry, the Gym Leader glances over, eyebrows lifting. "Oh, hey! Be with you in just a sec, 'kay?"

Beau gives the Scorbunny a thumbs-up, gesturing toward the beach. "I gotta do some work, but take Dom and you guys go get some water and take a breather, alright? You both deserve it!" The Scorbunny smiles broadly, nodding, before bouncing over to the Rillaboom and offering an excited squeak. The Rillaboom drops to the ground with a reverberating thud, shaking his mane free of his face before following the smaller pokémon as the bunny bounds ahead, skipping down a low set of wooden steps at the rear of the building and vanishing from sight.

The man takes a towel from around his shoulders and wipes at his forehead before tossing it in a nearby basket, jogging to the front of the gym and extending his hand for a shake. "Beau Fontaine, pleasure to meet you, brah!" he grins. "I don't recognize you, so I'm gonna go out on a limb and say you're Isaac, here for the course out back, yeah?"

[attr="class","skullbody"]Dear god. This Gym . . . was a gym! Somehow, Isaac didn't expect this. Half of the Pokemon working out here could probably bench press your average human, however, so it was clear that the leader was doing a very good job of leading them through their gym activities. Were even fighting types this bulky usually? What were they putting in the water here at Dewford?

He briefly eyed Dhelmise, as if to try and make out what the anchor was looking at as it entered the room. There was no way it wasn't paying attention to all of this action, right? Despite this, the Dhelmise just seemed to be passively hovering behind him. Why was he even trying? Even if the Dhelmise had interest in any of this, it couldn't express it. Man. Watson would've been cheering up a storm at all of this. He would've been toddling around the gym, trying to hype up the lifters. Hell, the poor thing would've probably gotten itself wedged underneath a barbell before the gym leader even arrived!

Thinking how much easier this'd be with a different Pokemon wouldn't do him any favors here. Watson was Watson, Dhelmise was Dhelmise. And damnit, one way or another, he'd come out of this understanding Dhelmise! Even if it took the whole trial!

Speak of the devil, and the trial begins. The gym leader approached, extended a hand for an enthusiastic handshake. Isaac was all too happy to accept it, putting his best handshake forward despite being a lot slimmer and weaker than the gym leader. His hand was totally getting crushed either way, so why not give it his all in return? "Yep! I'm Isaac, and that big anchor there's my partner for this run," he said. In response, Dhelmise . . . continued to hover ominously.

It was probably really fun at parties, too.

In contrast, the close relationship Beau had with the Pokemon working in his gym was enviable. Hell, the close relationship Isaac had with the other staples he had on his team was enviable. If this ended up being a battle of bonds, he and Dhelmise were really going to be fighting from behind. Nevertheless, he refused to let the brainstorming within interrupt his outward confidence. Instead, he shot Beau as winning of a grin as he could. "So! How are we doing this?" he asked.

The other man offers an easy grin, jerking one thumb over his shoulder to indicate the absent rear wall of the gym and the bright shallows lapping at the beach beyond. "Right this way, brah, I'll show you the ropes! Or the rope, anyway," he quips with a dazzling, lopsided grin, as though amused at his own joke.

Beckoning to the challenger, Beau turns and heads to the back of the building with long, loping strides, coming upon a low set of wooden steps that he descends easily before tromping across the sand. "So, the gist of the thing was included in the form letter the nerds sent out when your application was accepted," he narrates boisterously, waving one hand to indicate an array of bridges, beams, and other structures that sprawl across the shoreline.

"Super easy - or easy to understand, anyway, 'cause I don't really do complicated that well," he amends, rubbing the back of his neck with a self-deprecating smile. He comes to a pause near a tall platform, turning to wait for the challenger to catch up. "You'll have three obstacles standing between you and the Badge - might be a challenge for you, or your Dhelmise, or even both if you're really lucky! Just go with the flow, do your best, and, uh, try not to fall into the water, yeah?"

He fires off an encouraging double-thumbs-up at Isaac and his Dhelmise, beaming broadly. "Any questions?"

[attr="class","skullbody"]Oh yeah! All those release and liability wavers! It had been so long, Isaac damn near forgot about them. But, hey. If it was easy, it wouldn't be a gym challenge, now would it? Isaac had wondered why it had been written in such plain language, considering all the legalese you usually saw on these forms. It seemed the gym leader and he had equal levels of impatience when it came to all that junk. Good.[break][break]

That just left the facts. Three obstacles out of the big old maze that Beau had shown off. No teleporting or ghost zoning his way to just cheat through them. Don't touch the water, or you're outta here. Easy. With all the scrambling around he'd done over the past few months, this should be a piece of cake. "No questions here!" Isaac said, a confident smirk on his face.[break][break]

He had to admit, this setup was impressive. It seemed a little strange that the entire wall of the gym was missing, but, shit. When you were the leader, you called the shots, clearly. And Isaac wasn't about to complain when faced with such a fantastic view of the shore. He shimmied his way up to the tall platform that Beau stood atop, surveying the course that stretched out before him.[break][break]

And then he returned Beau's double thumbs up. "All set to go here!"
