The Pokémart is like a fucking warzone.

Tam had not taken part in the Three Day War or any of that nonsense, but when stepping through the store’s automatic sliding doors, he’s pretty damn sure that this is kind of what that must have been like. People are running from one side of the store to the other, grabbing just about anything they can grab and caring little for how much they break in the process. They yell, scream at each other, and he even notices a few blows being exchanged here and there. Companion pokémon hiss and growl, sparks filling the air.

Through it all, the ranger watches from near the entrance, his expression deadpan despite the way he blinks a few times as if to make sure he isn’t imagining the chaos before his eyes.

Tam and a cadet had been asked to stop by the Pokémart to stock up food for the pokémon that are kept at HQ, but they sure as hell hadn’t expected to step into a scene like this one.

”Hmm… I wonder if there’s anything left...”

It’s as if the chaos doesn’t even affect him.

Howl is that cadet that was volunteered to go to the Pokemart with Tam to get food for the Pokemon at Ranger HQ. Or, rather, the cadet that was thrown to the wolves-- here they are now, with slavering jaw and gnashing teeth. Oh, wait, that’s not wolves, that’s two white ladies fighting over a bottle of CoffeeMate.

“Moltres have mercy,” Howl whispered, pausing to take in the absolute hellscene of chaos, “what is happening?”

Tam-- their new buddy Tam, the good ol’ Tam-tam, Tameroon, Tampani drum, Tampax pearl-- didn’t seem at all phased by the noise and light and crush of disorderly bodies. Howl swallowed, and bent down to grab a plastic basket that had been discarded on the floor, hurrying to catch up with Tam.

“Shouldn’t we--,” they started, then swallowed the words. “Aren’t we--,” they tried again, “like, the authorities? Shouldn’t we… interfere? Sir?”

Not that he was, like, way up the chain of command, but he was definitely a higher rank than Howl.

Tam makes a beeline for the pokémon food aisle. Masterfully, as if it were no problem at all, he avoids the people running around the pokémart; calmly weaving his way through the crowd without ever running into anyone. Naturally, he expects Howl to keep up, and to their credit, they do, and they even bring up something the blond hadn’t really considered until now.

”Shouldn’t we… interfere? Sir?”
[break]
Pause. Tam stops on his tracks.
[break][break]
”Hmm… You think so?” Howl does have a point: rangers have a certain degree of authority, and they do have the duty to help in situations of crisis, especially if there are pokémon involved. But, can this crowd even be controlled? The store’s security is already doing what they can and there’s a chance that if they were to intervene they’d just make things worse. ”Just Tam is fine, by the way.”

With that, he keeps on walking.

A few steps and he makes it to the almost empty pokémon food aisle, sighing at the sight of what little is left. He picks up a can, looks at the nutritional information, and frowns just so slightly. ”Yeah… That won’t do.”

While Tam is busy with that, a woman nearby stacks up a cart with just about anything she can grab.

It’s like watching a shadow-- one minute he’s there, the next minute he’s over there, and then he’s over there, like he leaped through space without touching the ground. He pauses, just briefly, to let a screaming child and a parent in hot pursuit crash across his path, before continuing on again. Holy shit, how does he do it?

Howl is not quite so lucky. They get punched by a teenager who dove over a Poptart stand, then stumble backwards and trip over a container of disinfectant wipes that all the wipes have been ripped out of. They land hard on their ass and wince, then push to their feet, gritting their teeth and clenching their basket.

They catch up just in time to hear Tam telling them to address him as just Tam and Howl blinks. “Uh. Yes, si-- I mean, Tam.”
[break][break]
The aisle they’re aiming for is nearly picked clean. Howl looks at the lady with literal towers of cans in her cart, looking like she was setting up the Barad-dûr and Orthanc of nonperishables.

“Excuse me, ma’am,” Howl tries, “do you think we could have just a can or two?”
[break][break]
“No!” she shrieks, jerking her cart away and sending the piles of cans clattering to the ground. It takes all the fight in Howl’s body to not drop to the floor and fight with her over them.

She gathers a handful up in her arms and spits:

“If you weren’t smart enough to plan ahead, then doom on you!”

How does one plan ahead for a dome suddenly appearing around the region and keeping anyone from entering or leaving? Well, there’s probably those who have bunkers ready in case the League’s plan fails and the meteor hits or something, but Tam sure isn’t one of those people. Perhaps this woman who seems so desperate to grab as many cans as she can find has a point, but if she’s desperate doesn’t that mean she also didn’t plan ahead for this?

Even though it may seem as if he’s not paying attention, Tam watches the scene from the corner of his eye while reading the nutritional information of the few cans that are left on the shelf. A couple are put in his shopping basket, but eventually, he sighs, approaching Howl and putting a hand on their shoulder.
[break][break]
”Here.” He gives the cadet the basket, and stepping closer to the woman, he brings out his ranger badge (despite the fact that his uniform clearly identifies him as such).
[break][break]
”Ma’am, I understand being worried or scared with everything that’s going on, but everyone is in the same position. If you take more than what you need, others will be left with no supplies, and rangers can’t protect the people of Hoenn if our pokémon starve.”
[break][break]
He stares at her, clearly not fazed by her behaviour, and once this is said, he takes a whole pack of cans directly from her cart. Can he even do that? Do rangers have the authority to do things like those? Probably not, but with how serious he sounds and how unapologetic he is about it all, anyone would surely assume that they do.

Just like that, Tam turns to walk back towards where Howl stands, and through it all a single thought crosses his mind: ”Ugh, that was a lot of talking. People can be so damn annoying…”

Howl swallows, raising their arms and stepping back from the lady who, frankly, seems pretty frothing mad. On a good day, Howl could write it off as an exception to their rule that people are, while not necessarily good, normally, at least, on this side of sane.

This is not a good day, however; the dome is a capillary of madness, and Howl realizes sinkingly, the Meteor may not have to do the work if they just kill each other. In fear, out of a perceived defense, or pushed to extremes by the supposed feeling of isolation-- an immunity from the rest of the world.

Tam is a beacon, an irregularity in his… regularness. He presses Howl gently aside, admonishes the woman with wisdom Howl thought they saw in a fortune cookie, once, then snags a case of cans out of her haphazard mess of a cart, turning on his heels and dismissing them both in the span of an action. The woman gapes. Howl does too.

Howl fights the urge to give the woman an apologetic glance, turning away without doing so--
[break][break]
--and cries out as something heavy strikes the back of their head. They wince, folding, clapping a hand over the injured spot as a can, now dented, slams loudly to the ground and rolls with a tinny sound in an arc at their feet.
[break][break]
“That man just stole from me!” The woman shrieks, pointing an accusatory finger over Howl’s bowed head at Tam.
[break][break]
Everyone’s stealing from everyone, Howl wants to say, but their teeth clacked together when the can hit them and now their jaw hurts. They at least have the wherewithal to grab the can off the ground before they hurry to keep pace with Tam. Behind them, the woman is still yelling:

“The League thinks they can just send their lapdogs in here to steal from us normal people!”
[break][break]
And people aren’t really listening but they are, kinda. Some look when Howl and Tam pass, frightened eyes whale-white wide; others convey their feelings in the way they don’t look, how they jerk their carts around and pointedly stare in a different direction.

“I don’t like this,” Howl says, not sure, exactly, what part they’re talking about.
