Gentrification is a pain in the ass, in more ways than one.

Case in point: this little subsection of Mauville Hills, gated and extending off of the main drag that ran past the apartment complex. The idea was secluded living, large, and in-style, which went against everything they’d done with the Mauville Hills luxury apartments.

Memo shook his head. He couldn’t begin to understand rich people, and he didn’t want to, either.
[break][break]
He was here on a job with his fellow Ranger (and friend) annalise henderson , both of whom having drawn the apparent short straws for this one. They stood at the edge of a construction site, looking over the starting frame of a huge home-- or what would be a home, if someone hadn’t made a sinkhole in the basement. It was almost twenty feet in diameter and narrowed into a tight curve, hinting at some other subterranean structure far beneath.

And then there was the ominous hissing. It came from the pit and worsened every time something broke off and tumbled in, disappearing into the darkness below, before evening out again. It could’ve been gas or electricity lines, which, while not necessarily less dangerous, were certainly less scary. But Memo’s luck didn’t always hold up, and he had a feeling he was rolling straight snake-eyes.

He was thinking about how best to make that joke out loud while he waited for Annalise to join him at the edge of the pit, staring down into nothingness.

annalise is pretty excited to work with Guillermo Marceliño again.

her last mission with him had turned (thanks to her) unnecessarily harrowing, but he's equal parts good-at-his-job and fun which puts him head and shoulders above the boring and bureaucratic rangers she's seen around the various headquarters. [break][break]
this mission sounds easier than the last. they just have to charm a couple snakes, according to the higher-ups. she and guillermo are pretty charming people, so they'll clean up quick so long as they stay out of biting distance. speaking of distance, the travel time from her apartment to the construction site? mere minutes, giving her hours to get ready, put make up on, and scroll through tiktok.

annalise is ten parts deep in a hoenn conspiracies playlist when a notification banner drops down, declaring, unhelpfully, that it's time for her to meet up with her partner. not in thirty minutes, not in ten minutes — now. she rises from her bed with a whisper-screamed, "oh shit!"

she and cotton candy burst from her house in a flurry of scattered, fluttering wings. her altaria must've sensed the urgency because she drops annalise off without taking the extra time to park herself on the sidewalk.

she stumbles on the landing, then beelines for the construction site. she slows down as she approaches, eyes widening at how big the sinkhole has gotten since she first heard the news of the ground caving in. coming to a stop at his side with a sunny "hey!", she peers down at the hissing abyss below them.

"it's just problem after problem with this place." cotton candy's silhouette passes over. "it must be like, cursed or something."

Listen, their last mission had went tits up because they both underestimated their opponent, and that was that. It wasn’t Anna’s fault that Memo was liable to jump headfirst into things, just like it wasn’t her fault that she seemed to prefer a ranged way of wheeling and dealing. Together, they formed two halves of a single brain… cell, at the very least.

He’s peering down into the sinkhole beneath the house’s skeletal structure when Anna is there in a flutter of wings and fabric. Memo grins at her as she arrives, fashionably late-- but fashionable all the same.

“Sure, if hubris can be considered a curse,” he snorts, rolling his eyes. Not at her, but at-- this. At the grandeur of it. The ridiculousness. “Sorry. The idea of putting up luxury mansions next to luxury apartments is just. Bizarre to me.” But that was the glory of money, wasn’t it? It didn’t learn. It wasn’t sentient.

“So, fancy a little spelunking?” he asked, grin widening. “I was going to send Oona in to smoke them out but I imagine we’ll at least have to get a little dirty before the day is done.”

"no, i agree!" the sentiment strikes a chord with her. as a mauville city native living with three other people, the audacity of building mansions grates her. they should be building more apartments, if anything. the city has no space, pricing baristas, grocery store workers, creatives, everyone out of city proper.

though they primarily deal with pokemon-related problems, even a ranger can see the storm of people-related issues clouding the horizon.

in the back of her mind, annalise realizes they're kind of complicit by doing this mission. it's pretty obvious that the contractors complained about their snake problem to some higher ups and that had trickled down to her and Guillermo Marceliño. "maybe their investors will back out. they've probably lost sooo much money already and, like, they've been super slow building what they have so far."

she sticks her foot out, sneaker leaning out over the sinkhole. with the toe of her shoe, she motions towards everything the luxury mansions have so far — the luxury foundation, the luxury weight-bearing frame, the luxury massive sinkhole centerpiece.

annalise tucks her foot back underneath her at the mention of spelunking, looking at him with a smirk. after the last mission, spelunking should be the last thing on their minds. it's compelling, it's interesting, it's stupid.

"fuck it, let's do it!" she says, enthusiastic. "and who knows? maybe the snakes will be more open-minded if we don't smoke them out."

or maybe they'll be more pissed to have home intruders. only one way to find out.

with a sharp whistle, cotton candy flies low to pick up her trainer and flutter her to the bottom of the sink hole. without prompt, she flies back to the top and offers guillermo a ride down as well. once they're both in the sinkhole (whether he took the ride or found a way down himself), the altaria perches at the top and watches them intently.

annalise peers into the yawning mouth of the tunnel where the sinkhole curves, unable to see more than a few feet. a hiss, prompted by the commotion outside, peters out in the lapse of silence. she looks at guillermo. "hopefully it's just afraid and not, like, hungry."

There’s a lot to be said about the human-sized hubris of an indoor city in general. Coming from Galar, where the wealth divide is astronomical and very obvious, he’d thought everyone had been joking-- or, at the very least, exaggerating. Mauville was a dystopian nightmare that outshone even his worst ones.

“We can only hope, right?” he says, but he doesn’t sound convinced. He sighs, crestfallen. “The important thing is… people and Pokemon don’t get hurt. Physically.” He offered her a small smile. “That’s what I tell myself to sleep at night, at least.”
[break][break]
He’d grown up in a family of six total siblings and a fiercely smothering parental unit. There hadn’t been a lot of money to go around, amongst other things, like privacy, and personal freedoms. Trying to imagine all of that fitting inside an indoor city made his stomach hurt-- and here he was, playing party to it.
[break][break]
His grin returns lightning quick at her acquiescence and excitement at his idea. Okay, so keep the mongoose on the backburner. He can do that, even if Oona would be disappointed. He takes Cotton Candy’s proffered lift with a smile and a thanks, landing next to Annalise and kicking up a small cloud of dust.

“Yeah. Hopefully.”
[break][break]
The sinkhole curves tightly to the right, narrowing down to a tunnel about five feet in diameter. Guillermo takes the lead, since he’s operationally sized (short. He’s short.) but even he has to crouch down to avoid dragging his head on the ceiling. The hissing intensifies, echoing through the tunnel. He has to turn on his phone flashlight to see (you’d think, after this, and the lighthouse, he’d bring his own damn flashlight) moving forward slowly until he steps and meets--

--nothing. Air. He pauses, one hand dug into the dirt of the side of the tunnel, shining his flashlight down into the abyss…

…below was a mass of writhing, purple and olive bodies. Ekans. A lot of them. And in the center, the flattened hood of a giant Arbok.

annalise smiles as Guillermo Marceliño joins her in the sinkhole and waves goodbye to her altaria as she flies off to her vantage point above them. she lets her partner take the lead, slipping into the tunnel the sinkhole slopes into. she follows at his heels, hand tracing the dirt wall, back bowed as the space around them constricts.

she squints at guillermo's silhouette, her pulse rising as they get closer to the source of the hissing. arceus, that's definitely not one snake, she thinks, worrying her bottom lip in her teeth. it sounds more than a few, even. ahead, guillermo stops, illuminating the dark void the path drops off into.

"is that — " she starts, her voice a ghost of a whisper behind him. with her own phone flashlight, she tries to peer beyond her partner's shoulder. a glimpse of the ball of snakes is enough. " — a fucking snake pit?"

her brows knit, free hand running over the poke balls at her belt. she has an idea, but it rides on guillermo's observational skills. "do you, like, see any way for them to get out of there? or do you think they can climb back out this way, maybe?"

"i know you must be so over me trying to shoehorn ice attacks into missions, but i think it might actually, like, work for this one." she lowers her phone flashlight so it's pointing uselessly at their feet. "snakes don't like the cold. i think if we can chill the temps down here, they'll move to somewhere warmer. then we can close this tunnel or flood it or whatever."

“Sure looks like it,” he confirms, voice grim, shifting slightly to the side so Annalise can see over his shoulder. It isn’t hard. She can practically see over his head.

He moves his phone to try and see if there are any obvious alternate exit routes. “I-- I don’t know,” he said, squinting, as though that would help him see more in the dim light, “but they didn’t get in through the sinkhole, so I-- I assume there has to be?”

He wasn’t a snake expert by any means but the construction crews had been out since the crack of dawn when the sinkhole opened up like a mouth in the earth and no one had seen any snakes coming in or out, or at all, until now.

Her admission makes him laugh. “Yeah, the whole one time you tried to suggest it,” he cackles, the sarcasm and glee obvious in his tone, “how dare you.” He looks at her, face cast in the dim light of their phones. “I think it’s a good idea to try. Worst case scenario, they get so cold they stop moving.” There’s a flash when his expression turns from happy to puzzled. “That’s-- that’s what happens when snakes get cold, right?”

He shakes his head. It’s irrelevant. “Good plan. Let’s do it.”

"must be," annalise affirms quietly as Guillermo Marceliño extrapolates the existence of another exit from his observation of the snake pit. it's the easiest answer, though she doesn't discount other ideas like: the snakes slithered into this tunnel and fell over the edge or the sinkhole formed, the snakes made a home here, and then the tunnel collapsed ahead.

the snakes sound too lively for either of those to be timeline of events. they also sound too lively to be removed without a fight, so the suggestion to chill them out rises in her throat.

she giggles at his mock offense, the back of her hand lingering against her lips as she swallows her amusement down. unlike last time, this suggestion has a solid foundation. guillermo builds on it, helpfully raising the notion that they will grow sluggish and inactive at the very least. in the dim light, she watches the shadows on his face shift into bemusement as he second guesses himself.

"no, you're so totally right. they're coldblooded so they can't regulate their temperature like us." she hadn't really thought to move them once they're cold — only to chase them out with unpleasantly chilly air. she smiles at him as he signs off on the idea, pleased by the approval and nervous for how their plan will unfold. "i think we should back up a bit toward the entrance just in case, i don't know, the snakes can somehow get up here?"

as the caboose of the ranger train, she doubles back through the tunnel first, hand trailing the wall as she ducks through narrow sections. near the entrance, where the tunnel is not so compressed, she releases her frosmoth past guillermo and into the dark of the tunnel. icy dust shudders off its wings with each beat of its wings.

"let's lower the temp in here," she whisper-yells to her pokemon. frosmoth beats its wings harder, conjuring up cold wind and snow flurries that howl as they rush deeper into the yawning abyss of the darkened tunnel.

Yes, score one for basic understanding of biology. He had always been an art kid, not a science kid. “Good idea,” he said-- she was just full of ‘em today-- following her back to the entrance of the sinkhole. He didn’t want to admit it but the idea of a snake being able to reach the ledge made him nervous.

The sunlight emboldens him, and he flashes two thumbs to Anna as she releases her Frosmoth. As promised, the temperature drops suddenly enough to make Memo shiver, the wind cycloning around them; little reams of frost, like veins in the earth, crystallize and spread down the tunnel. The hissing intensifies, and Memo holds his breath, hoping that things will resolve easily…

…and for a second it looks (and sounds) like he might be right. The hissing rises in pitch and then fades, coupled with a raspier sound that Memo interprets as snake bodies sliding through the dirt. Eventually, the wind and the cracking frost subside, and then there is silence.

Memo is about to suggest they go down and make sure everything is clear when a large, purple hooded head pops up into view of the tunnel, the ridiculously huge Arbok’s eyes glowering red. It flashes its fangs in a guttural noise that could be more called a snarl than a hiss, and launches at them, trapping them between an angry snake and a hard place-- er, the side of a very tall hole.

Guillermo yelps and does the only thing he can do-- he spikes Oona’s Pokeball in front of him and the shiny Galarian Linoone shoots out of a burst of light, tangling with the Arbok and rolling with it back towards the sinkhole cavern.

as the temperature drops, it seems like this mission will go over without another hitch. and then an arbok pops its head into the tunnel with a guttural hiss that reverberates off the walls. [break][break]annalise tenses, shifting her weight onto her heels even though she isn't sure where they would go — but thankfully guillermo acts before she can think. in a flash of light, his linoone launches at the arbok.
in a tangled ball, they roll back toward the tunnel's entrance.

annalise glances toward Guillermo Marceliño , a shared look that speaks before her lips move. "let's go!"

she returns her frosmoth with a tap of her poke ball, moving to the mouth of the cavern to make sure her partner's linoone is still in one piece. her altaria flutters over the fighting, lashing her talons out at the arbok.

Yes, thankfully Guillermo acts before anyone can think-- before he can think, even. Because panic spiking a Pokeball down is still an action, panicked or not.

“Right!” He follows after her, but keeps his eyes locked on Oona and the Arbok. The snake’s coils loop loosely around her-- not a species made for squeezing-- and she slips through like a greased pig, teeth clacking together just millimeter’s away from purple scales. She skids backwards, claws dragging in the tunnel floor, and launches back in.

It has to be the head, Memo thinks, the line from a childhood favorite movie coming back to him all of a sudden, the head above the hood. And once I am there, I must never let go.

Luckily, unlike Rikki-tikki-tavi, Oona is not alone. Cotton Candy swoops in, talons looking more deadly than they might seem. Faced with the two-fold attack, the Arbok lashes back and forth; Oona chases it, and manages to sink her teeth into its side-- on the wrong side of the hood. The Arbok writhes and contracts the hood, twisting its head in an impossible shape to bite Oona’s back leg.

They’re locked momentarily in an ouroboros of predation, but the snake seems to have the upper hand, using leverage from its long body to try and lift Oona off the ground, make her lose her footing-- but they’re Pokemon, in the end, and Oona’s fur crackles with energy as she cranks a thunder into the thing at point blank range. The air snaps with the burning of ozone and the flash is lightning-bright, but in the deafening silence following, the snake goes limp. Charcoal smoke rolls up from its blackened purple scales.

“Holy-- crap,” Memo says, the words coming out of him like a cough.

With great effort, Oona drags the snake back to them, drops it on the ground at their feet, and goes to grooming herself, putting her fur back in order.

annalise stares, lips parted, as the trio of pokemon go at it. Guillermo Marceliño's linoone squirming out of the arbok's tightening grasp, both parties snapping their fangs, and her own altaria lashing out from above to distract the snake from gaining purchase.

then it does. a little horrified gasp rising in the cadet's throat as its curved teeth sink into oona's leg, then another, louder gasp hiccups out of her as thunder lights up the hole around them and cuts through the arbok. what just happened? she wonders, struggling to piece together the final moments of the fight — until oona drops the snake at their feet.

"holy shit ... your linoone really did that," she breathes the words out, voice reverent. with a cautious nudge of her sneaker, she checks the arbok for signs of life. it doesn't react to her touch, but she can't blame guillermo's pokemon for going all out when their lives were at stake.

it's some relief that the arbok goes into an empty pokeball.
[break][break]
"we should make sure the hole is cleared out," she says with a little nod. "and then i'll, like, take this guy to a pokemon center to see what we can do for it."
[break][break]
and if the arbok isn't burnt to a crisp, she'll release it somewhere far from civilization. annalise turns to the grooming linoone and bends down, "hey, um, thanks for having our back! i really appreciate it! memo better give you a bunch of poffins for your bravery."

she tips her head to look guillermo's way, grinning.
