“See!” Memo said, clapping his hands and grinning in excitement. “You just called him grumpy. They’re both grumpy. Even you admit it.” He’d consider that a win in his book.

He hummed a thoughtful note when Alex turned back to him. “You have, like, a thousand Pokemon,” Memo said, the sass deeply woven in the words, “so I think I have a lot, still, to meet.”

Zelle would always be his favorite, though.

When Alex mentions his Eeveelutions, Memo makes a face. “Eh, I sort of only met them by osmosis. Like, we were in the same room together? There were never real introductions.”

Sibella is up in a flash of wings and a second later she’s dragging down an angry Golbat to press into the ground, grinning down, teeth white-sharp. Memo zaps it with a Pokeball before it can injure itself in its flailing.

“I believe that number to be extremely exaggerated.”

He couldn’t help but roll his eyes, before breaking down into another fit of laughter.

“Well, at least I know what to do when we get back later. I know Zarya already saw you. She’s my Espeon, fucking sass queen…” he grumbled with another ‘sigh’ as he rolled his eyes again.

“Half of my Eeveelutions are either shitheads or not mentally present, there is no in between,” he went on as he waved his hand off to one side.

In the undergrowth, a Paras scuttled away.

“Sure seems like it, sometimes,” he said, affectionate, not conceding the point; honestly, sometimes it seemed like Alex had too many Pokemon. They were all unique and, if he was being truthful, a little bit crazy. Or so it seemed.

Granted, he had very little room to speak.

Still. Memo was pretty sure when Alex laughed angels got their wings, or whatever the fuck the saying was. He was really down bad, huh?

“You? Having a sassy Pokemon?” he joked, covering his mouth in mock scandal, the sarcasm in his tone thick. “Never. I’ll never believe it.”

Freya, bored with the conversation and unimpressed with the flirting, found a Skiddo and scooped it around the middle, pressing it skyward with one arm, to show off. The little goat bleated in confusion but seemed happy enough to be used as a living dumbbell.

He was sure, that somewhere, one of the many ovines that made his head ache every single day sneezed out of the blue. He was certain of it.

When the Lucario turned a nearby Skiddo into a dumbbell, he couldn’t help but burst out into a fit of laughter.

“Okay, that’s just crazy,” he managed to wheeze out.

In the undergrowth, a Pinsir clicked its mandibles menacingly, before flying away further to look for something to eat.

“William’s perfect and has never done anything wrong in his life,” Memo said, knee-jerk and immediate and with all the conviction of stating an indisputable fact.

He stood in concert with Alex and watched Freya do her goat workouts.

“She’s… special,” he allowed, earning him a glare from both Freya and Sibella that had him lifting his hands up in mock surrender. “Look, I don’t know what conflict you got going on but you need to figure that out yourselves.”

The Pokemon exchanged angry sneers and looked away.

Memo shrugged. “Well, they can’t all get along like your old men.”

Freya continued to press the Skiddo, and was much delighted to find a Skorupi toddling along at her feet that she picked up in her empty hand; she proceeded to standing bench them both.

“You really like batting for the wayward mastermind of the herd, huh,” he remarked quietly as he watched the other Lucario, silly as it was, and started to turn two Pokémon into living dumbbells.

Not that Vincent would do that, still.

“What about the poor herd master though?” he teased a few moments afterward before falling silent.

Up in the sky, a loud avian screaming—most likely directed at Memo—shattered the peaceful quiet.

“Yeah, they don’t like being called ‘old’, you know,” he continued as he collapsed into another quiet fit of the giggles. A few moments later, an angry draconic roaring followed afterward.

“I think Gabe said he’s only a teenager. In Salamence years,” he followed up afterward as the giggles continued to escape him.

It didn’t take too long for another Skiddo to approach the Lucario, angery bleating as he watched the other Skiddo being bench-pressed and was like, utterly distressed.

“Uh-oh,” he went on, tilting his head at the other Skiddo who was trying to get the Lucario to drop the other caprine…ish… Pokémon that Freya was holding.

“Will’s my favorite,” Memo said, shamelessly picking up his sword for the Wooloo, “so, yeah.” He paused in thought, reaching one arm equally as shamelessly to wrap around Alex’s waist. “Except for Zelle. She’s my favorite favorite.”

The mix of warbling and shrieking that fell down around them made him wince, thought he was laughing as much as Alex through it all.

“Maybe he’s just an old soul, then, because he sure had me fooled.”

Which was bold talk in the face of a dragon that wanted to eat him on the best of days.

Freya tilted her head at the approaching Skiddo, lowering her arm and offering her makeshift goat weight with little fanfare.

“Be nice,” Memo hissed, because he knew his Pokemon and he knew a fake olive branch when he saw it.

Freya rolled her eyes and gently placed her Skiddo on the ground. The two goats touched noses to assure that everything was okay; some message was exchanged, because the wild Skiddo moved up to bleat at Freya.

“Aww, cute,” he cooed at the sight of the two Skiddo. If he had to take a guess they were of the same gender, which one though he had no idea.

But they were so cute together!

“…suddenly I’m reminded of how many gay Pokémon I have,” he added with a chuckle as a Skorupi lazily drifted by. Much as Vincent the Lucario wanted to snipe it out of the air, he was well above being petty.

(Not like the Salamence and the Braviary who were snickering in mid-air.)

“…huh,” he mused, rummaging in his pockets and thankfully finding enough Pokéballs to capture Pokémon in.

Was this to be his lot in life? To absorb gay goats and sheep into his circle like a parched desert flower in a rainstorm?

“Right?” he says on the back half of a snort, suddenly filled with a strange feeling of warmth.

Maybe it was his lot in life.

A shy Snover peeked from behind a tree, thinking it was blending in well to its surroundings. Sibella lifted into the air, landed behind it, and chirped; startled, it ran forward, straight into a low-hanging tree branch, and fell over.

“Talk about low hanging fruit,” Memo said, zapping it with a Pokeball. “Speaking of fruit, are you hungry? Do you have time for a bite to eat?”
