"And she is humble too, a rare quality." He smiled, just a touch teasing as he looked back towards the trio playing. He supposed there was truth in that though, but there was always more to something than that. Her involvement allowed for good things to happen, regardless of the directness of that involvement. It was much better than his own excuse. She fixed people, he broke them. Or at least, he used to. It was all behind him, but the money was hard to ignore. "Even then, I'm sure people appreciate what you do."

The military was his most recent cover up, but he could still change. His more cynical side didn't believe in change though. It was only right of her then to return the sentiment, asking him what he did. It's complicated, was the real answer. He felt like he was being chased wherever he went, hunted by a past that wasn't yet ready for him to forget the good old days.

"Military, mostly. Some odd jobs. Nothing too terribly exciting." That was the gist of it, most of the transfer had been rushed. Some might even claim a blatant attempt to hide from something. The storm seemed to be picking up some then. Her chill didn't escape his attention.

He pulled off his back pack, filled mostly with snacks and toys. "I know this is very dad of me, but I have a blanket if you're cold. It has Furfrous on it, so very chic."

Nikita anticipated the compliment and accepted it with a light sigh. There was no use arguing. People had a tendency to insist on her accomplishments and good deeds even though she tried redirecting them to the individuals who truly deserved praise.[break][break]

That Kosei was in the military was unsurprising. He was certainly prepared enough, what with the backpack he carried that undoubtedly held all the things he needed to take care of Miu. Nikita allowed herself a small smile of appreciation, even as she shook her head again.[break][break]

"I couldn't possibly—" But the blanket was already out of the backpack and in his hands. She couldn't help but laugh. The cartoon Furfrous printed on the fabric were adorable. It was clearly meant for children, for daughters. "Very well. Who am I to refuse such a kind offer?"[break][break]

She accepted the blanket, wrapping it around her shoulders. It was quite warm. She blushed again, this time grateful for the gesture.[break][break]

"Miu is very lucky to have a father like you," Nikita said softly, watching as the girl played with Grookey and Kosei's Riolu. Memories of her own father flashed through Nikita's head, each one colder than the last. Her grip on the blanket subconsciously tightened. "You clearly care for her deeply."

Perhaps it was dismissive not to accept her humility for as she'd offered it. She didn't seem like a fluke though. The sentiment still existed, so he simply decided to roll with it. It wasn't in his nature to call out goodness in people. vincenzo de luca would have claimed that the wolf in sheep's clothing wasn't fooling anyone. His attempt to seem decent was a mirage at best, and who knew him better than that bastard?

Thankfully, she didn't make a fuss about the blanket. He might have actually been embarrassed by the sentiment. What a sap he'd become. It was nearly laughable. Chivalric, he was not.

"Nah, I'm luckier to have her." He said with a shrug. "My parents were... absent, so I try to be a little better than that." Whether or not he failed at that, he couldn't say. Not without seeming biased. Somedays felt like good days and other days... well those he was not a good father. She was simply a very forgiving kid. "Truthfully, I haven't a damn clue what I'm doing half the time."

"I think most of us can say that about ourselves," Nikita remarked with a self-deprecating chuckle. She didn't expand on the thought, however, instead falling into silence as the rain continued to pour outside of the barn. Unlike the earlier awkwardness, however, this second lull in the conversation was more comfortable, the stillness interrupted only by Miu's laughter and the Pokémon's cries of delight.[break][break]

At Nikita's side, Audino tugged on her mistress' pants leg and made a sound of inquiry, pointing at the berries. The woman's smile turned fond as she nodded at the Pokémon. "Go ahead. We may be stuck here for a little while, and you've worked hard. Please eat."[break][break]

Audino smiled back, clapping her little paws with delight. She selected a razz berry from the pile and started to munch on it, content.[break][break]

After watching the rain for a short time, Nikita turned her attention back to Kosei. He really did look exhausted. She assumed watching over a child as young and rambunctious as Miu was a full-time job. And to work on top of that? Nikita couldn't imagine it. Yet he seemed happy watching his daughter play. He did not seem to think much of his ability as a parent, but he seemed to be trying. That was enough, right?[break][break]

Grookey scampering over to where she sat brought Nikita out of her musings. The monkey looked over his shoulder at Miu and gestured for her to come over, then looked at Nikita expectantly. Was he trying to introduce them? Going along with it, the woman smiled at Miu, who she hadn't formally met.[break][break]

"Hello," she said, attempting to sound friendly and welcoming as she waved to the little girl.

Kosei was more than aware there were worse parental examples than himself. He was at least trying and had never attempted to make an example of her as his own parents had done. She was not an extension of his own beliefs or lacking accomplishments, or at least he hoped. He'd never force her to be something she wasn't. Still, he was silent on the subject.

He continued to stare out into the drizzle, as the worst of the storm seemed to pass them by as the woman addressed his daughter. She was clearly growing impatient and fussy as their excursion had turned from fun to inconvenient. Being cooped up in one place was among Miu's greatest irritations. It was amusing to see her battle this while also trying to be polite to Nikita. "Hi there!"

Pokemon could only entertain her for so long and, eventually, she'd need lunch and a nap. Kosei too could go for a good nap and probably would like the old man he'd somehow become. He was thankful as the storm dwindled. Afternoon storms were normal this time of the year, passing as quick as they arrived, leaving the weight of humidity in their wake. "Looks like it's safe."

Miu seemed far too impatient for more than a quick hello, her restlessness growing as every minute passed. Thankfully, the rain eased its torrent and finally ceased, storm clouds giving way to sunshine that fell upon the damp fields. Nikita stepped out of the barn into the light, turning her face toward its warmth.[break][break]

"Thank you for letting me borrow this," she said to Kosei as she folded up the blanket and handed it to him. "I should be heading home, and from the look of things, so should you."[break][break]

She smiled gently at Miu. Then, gathering up her baskets and her Pokémon, she bid Kosei and his daughter one final farewell before departing down the gravel path toward her car.
