He's still dusty and bleeding from a few minor cuts when he drags himself into Slateport's Ranger HQ, bypassing whatever nonsense was going on in their common rooms to dutifully report to Tam Fawley's office. The scrap that he and Calliope Marks had gotten into wasn't particularly disastrous for any of the living, breathing parties involved, but they had accidentally compromised one of the docks.

"Before you say anything," Orion starts, lifting his hands both flesh and metal before he's even sat down, "I know. Keep my head down. Don't do anything stupid.

He slumps down in a chair, fingers carding through sweat-damp hair to push it back from his face.

"Calli's fine," because his partner had been forced to stay behind and deal with the dock workers while Orion reported to HQ. "No one's hurt. Just the dock. And one of the boats."

He shoots a sideways glance at the Captain. "Sorry. Sir."

Tam had known Orion was coming to his office, since he had been given the call about him reporting in. Clover had known Orion was coming to his office, since she had heard his footsteps all the way from down the hallway.

The Yamper eagerly waits for him at the door, and when he finally arrives, it’s with excited barks that she greets him – wagging that short tail of hers. However, as soon as Orion begins to speak, she whimpers as if extremely dissatisfied, and of course, she goes right back to Tam’s side, attempting to jump on his lap. Her little Yamper legs are way too short for that.

Tam also looks dissatisfied.

Which, in Tam’s case, is more like tired, disappointed, and utterly unimpressed.

”...Orion.” There’s a sigh, heavier than what’s needed. One that almost seems to say ”What the hell did I tell you?”

”Keep your head down.” That was it. At least Orion admits to it.

Tam gets up, resigned, and Clover seems to almost pout.

”Come on. You’re coming to put it on the board with me. We were at nine days.”

Unlike the rest of her colleagues Hailee was in a rather good mood, evident by her little humming as fluttered around the common room making sure everything was nice and clean. For the last few days Hailee had been on her best behavior. Why? Because her boss had promised them all a pizza party as long as there were no incidents to report. They'd been doing really well for 9 days so far. [break][break]

She could almost taste the yummy cheesy goodness of her sweet sweet pizza. She was so stoked she'd been dreaming about it for the past two days. Now sure, she could get her own pizza, but there was nothing like free food. Ever. Plus Tam usually went to a really good place to pick up his pies. [break][break]

While Hailee was busy trying to make her bosses life painless, she didn't even notice Orion stumble into the place looking like he'd just been run over by truck. Nope, poor Hailee was living in her own bubble while she hummed and swept up the dirt and dust in a corner. She did, however notice her boss exiting his office. [break][break]

Hailee beamed at him as she leaned on her broom. "So I'm thinking, for tomorrow's party we should get cookie cake too." she said with a snicker. "Now I know, I know. You promised only pizza, but I would argue, what good pizza party doesn't have cookie cake?" She would continue with a confident huff. She believed that was a pretty strong argument. [break][break]

It wasn't till she saw Orion trailing behind Tam looking all disheveled that she paused as she looked at the both of them. "The hell happened to you?" She asked as she straightened up. She had a bad feeling all of a sudden. "W-what are you guys doin?" she asked as she felt the corners of her mouth twitch.

"I know," Orion repeats, tired.

He is sorry, but he doesn't repeat the apology. Don't be sorry, be better. He's trying, he really is, but it must not look like that to Tam, who's having to deal with him again.

Resigned to being HQ's disappointment as per usual, he crouches down to give Clover an apologetic scratch behind the ears before dutifully following Tam out into the main room. Immediately upon taking in the spotless surroundings and his beaming colleague in Hailee Jacobs, Orion knows they're going to have a problem. No one's been more excited about free pizza than Hailee.

Grimacing, he says nothing, stepping up to the board.

IT HAS BEEN 9 DAYS SINCE OUR LAST INCIDENT

He reaches for where they usually kept the marker only to find it closer to the height chart, instead. The notched doorframe bore two instances of his own name, 5'2" angrily scribbled out with a scrawled 5'7" above. He'd still been the shortest until Talia Celes had joined the crew; seemed like someone had taken the initiative to add her 5'4" to the count.

Erasing the proud nine, he replaces it with a fat zero.

"Sorry, Hailee."

Everything ended up moving in slow motion as Hailee watched the look on their faces. She didn't like that. Why did Tam look so disappointed? Okay, even more disappointed than usual? Why did Orion look so guilty? Why couldn't he look her in the eye and reassure her everything was going to be okay?[break][break]

She watched as he slowly approached the incident report board, Hailee's pride and joy for the past nine days. "Sorry, Hailee." was all that came from Orion's mouth as the number nine was replaced with a fat and ugly zero. Hailee felt her stomach drop and her eye twitch before bursting out into laughter. [break][break]

"Oh I get it." she said as she wiped a tear from her eye. "This is a joke. Okay, haha, it's funny. Now put my nine back." Hailee said as she stared at the two of them. But when neither one of them flinched to move Hailee's laughter died down as she stared back in utter disbelief. "This is a joke right?" It clearly was not. [break][break]

Hailee felt a deep sense of grief wash over her as she stumbled clutching her head. All her hard work. She'd showed up to work on time for the last nine days. Not a minute late. She'd completed the mountain of paperwork Tam had given her with a smile. A SMILE! Hell, she was even cleaning! Something she never did, but here she was, doing so gladly. All for her precious pizza party. [break][break]

Rage.[break][break]

That's what she felt right now. Her grip tightened around the broom as her head hung low. "All you had to do." she said through clenched teeth. "Was behave yourself. For ten. Fucking. Days." she growled. If Orion wanted to cause an incident so bad, Hailee would show him what causing an incident looked like.[break][break]

In a flash Hailee snapped her head up before inhaling sharply and flinging the broom across the room in a perfect arch to nail Orion. While the broom was flying through the air Hailee took off running towards Orion. She was out for blood and she'd make him pay. She didn't give a damn if her boss was watching. Her precious pizza party was ruined! And all because of his lack of self-restraint.

Is he making fun of Orion? Is he teasing him? It’s always hard to tell with how matter-of-fact Tam is about everything, but this time, he’s as honest as can be. These are his standards. ”Be better” his father’s words ring in his mind once more, but just as before, they’re not voice.

He walks quietly into the breakroom, and when Hailee approaches him asking about the pizza party that had just been cancelled, Tam wonders if he should tell her. Why, though? She's about to see it for herself. He doesn’t even consider that the news might upset her.

He lets her talk, he lets Orion apologise, and when Hailee asks if this is a joke after the nine is removed from the board, he says nothing at all.
[break][break]
There’s no need to clarify the obvious.
[break][break]
But, apparently there is, because within seconds, the situation takes a turn for the worst. A broom is thrown, aimed directly at an already injured Orion, and although Tam knows there’s no stopping the projectile, he is actually fast enough to stop Hailee herself on her tracks. He grabs her by the back of her shirt, pulling her back before she can reach her target. Naturally, he’s incredibly calm through it all.

”Hailee. Stop.”

It probably won’t be enough to stop her, but Tam gives her the chance to before he has to make things worse.

If it were anyone else, Orion might've snapped at the off-hand comment, but Tam's teasing elicits a blush as Orion ducks his head, remembering in vivid detail how that night had ended.

"True."

Hailee doesn't make the situation any easier to deal with, unfortunately, her insistence that they must be playing some kind of a joke on her only serving to aggravate Orion's feelings of shame and regret. His lips part with every intention of clarifying the situation to her, but the building rage and the tightness with which his fellow cadet clutches her broom handle telegraphs her anger enough to see those words stick in his throat.

See, Orion can handle confrontation when he's upset, or when he's triggered. He absolutely cannot handle it when he's anxious and ashamed.

"I know," he mumbles, for what feels like the millionth time. It's not like I did it on purpose. He doesn't say that, though. He doesn't say anything else, because in the next moment a broom's being hurled at him like a makeshift javelin.

He's surprised enough that he doesn't dodge.

"Fuck — ow!" His own rage blossoms beneath pain, however minor. "What the fuck?"

His muscles, both meat and metal, tense in preparation for a confrontation, and he steps back only to feel the wall against his spine. Hopefully Tam's hand on her shirt would be enough to stop Hailee from swinging on him, because there wasn't anywhere he could retreat to and his reflexes are primed.

Tam's grip on her shirt was in fact, not enough. Reason had left the room because Hailee was now seeing red. Ignoring the warnings of her supervisor, Hailee managed to break free from Tam's grasp and lunge at Orion. For someone who wasn't really into many athletic things, Hailee was fast and she knew a few things about fighting back from her delinquent days. [break][break]

Besides, Orion was backed into a wall so he wouldn't be running anywhere. Her knee in his gut was swift before she grabbed him by the collar of his shirt. "Why can't you just behave yourself, just once, like a normal fucking person?!" Hailee had worn herself out being on her best behavior for these past nine days. [break][break]

Her only motivation being that she would get to enjoy a relaxing pizza part at the end of it all and things could go back to normal. She didn't ask for much from her co-workers. But this was just downright cruel. Everyone on this squad knew how much she had been looking forward to this thing. [break][break]

Hailee felt her eyes prickle through her anger. One of the things she hated the most about herself when she was extremely angry she would often cry. Not out of sadness but pure frustration. "I hate you." Hailee growled as she raised her hand prepared to lay it into Orion once more.

See, anyone who knows Tam would think him to be impervious to this sort of thing, since most people are incapable of getting a rise out of him. For the most part, they would be right: things like these don’t particularly affect him. Hailee getting angry over their pizza party being cancelled is her choice, and Orion not defending himself against her attacks is his choice.

There’s just one problem there, though.

They’re making these choices in the Ranger headquarters he’s in charge of, as members of his squad. Tam is generally a very tolerant captain, but even he has his limits.

”HAILEE.” Louder, sharper, and colder than before, his voice rings through the break room, and as he does so, Hailee’s raised hand is caught by the wrist, stopping her in her attempt to strike Orion once more. His grip isn’t meant to cause pain, but it is firm. This time she won't break free as easily.

Tam stares at her, as unreadable as always. He can see her tears.
[break][break]
”If you made a mistake on the job you wouldn’t want the other rangers to lash out at you. Everyone makes mistakes. Orion apologised. I get that you’re frustrated, but one lost pizza party isn’t worth the consequences that will come from acting like this.”

It’s at that moment that he lets go, yet his gaze remains fixed on her, even if he does glance at Orion to make sure he’s doing okay.
