Kieran was feeling pumped. Ready to go. Most of it was purely excitement and the chance of something more than he'd managed before. It was also a humored sort of excitement. Kieran wasn't stupid enough to think it was taken seriously. Even his twin sister looked at it with a shred of pessimism, like a parent observing a child's lofty goals. Supportive and yet knowing that it was more than likely going to end in disappointment.

Not without reason, Kieran had a sort of song and dance as he danced between things he wanted in his life. Hobbies that came and gone as readily as his expression of love. This felt different though, he was sure of it. That was probably naivety speaking, but he was at least hopeful that he could prove he wasn't entirely useless. It wasn't like he could depend on Calla his entire life.

So, yeah... he was excited and not quite ready to admit the possibility of letting himself down again. Even as he walked along towards the training ground, he was reading through the contents of the ranger handbook. Siv, his serperior, was slithering through the weeds that lined the path. She was also somewhat skeptical, a voice of reason if ever there was one, but also was simply content to enjoy the outing.

Arriving at the training grounds, he realized he was early. His sense of time was always a little off, but it was likely better early than late, right? He hadn't gotten distracted once, which was a bit surprising. Despite his earliness, he still addressed the empty training grounds"Mr. Fawley?"

”Just Tam is fine.” is the first thing the ranger captain says to Kieran Roth when making it to the training grounds. As per usual, he’s clad in a suit instead of the standard ranger uniform, but his badge and golden armband still mark his position and rank. Next to him, a small Yamper barks a greeting at the new trainee.

Part of being in charge of a city involves training its new recruits, and while Tam may not have the time to oversee every single aspect of said training, being in the loop is important to him.

This is Kieran’s first proper training session, and admittedly, Tam looks forward to seeing how he’ll do. Even if his impassive expression reveals no excitement or anticipation at all.

”Let’s get started.” He whistles, and from all around them, Falinks appear. Two Falinks, actually. Twelve individuals. They make a tight formation surrounding the trainee, but they do not attack him. There’s a fierce look on their faces, the move NO RETREAT serving as encouragement.

”I want you to get them out of this area.”

In the training grounds, the limits of the arena they stand at are clearly marked. The task seems simple in theory: get the Falinks to cross the line. A quick pokémon relocation.

"Tam, right.. sorry, mr.-" He paused, frowning in reflection of his own babbling. His nerves had climbed since entering the training square and the feeling of excitement had submitted beneath that anxiety somewhat. It had been a long time since he'd tried to do anything on his own. It was usually him and his twin, through everything. Calla was the tougher of the both of them. He followed Calla's lead and this was the first time he didn't have her to turn to.

He knew at least the parameters of the job, which was to do this job without the assistance of his pokemon either. That only made this even more daunting. Not only could he not rely on others, but also not his pokemon. Siv waited patiently behind, finding a nice place to sun among the grass, while he trainer went off to do whatever it was he was wanting to do.

Acting confident and being confident were two entirely different things. He eyed the Falinks, feeling a sense of dread. "Get them out? How am I.. Right... yeah, I can do that." He said, half in question and somewhat in an attempt to seem like he knew exactly what he was doing. What was he gonna do, ask them politely? Okay so maybe he could push them out? "Hi, sorry. Just need to... move you... over here." He said in the process of making the stubborn little things budge.

Some would say that it’s natural for a ranger to be nervous during their first training session: they want to do a good job, they want to impress their superior officer, and they want to be told they make a great ranger. Tam, however, doesn’t think of any of those things, nor does he think of Kieran’s hesitation and stammering.

The captain simply watches the way he interacts with the Falinks.

See, to him, that’s one of the most important things about being a ranger: how they interact with pokémon, if they fear them or if they respect them.

So, is this about judging how Kieran interacts with the Falinks?

Well, yes and no…

When the cadet attempts to make the Formation Pokémon budge, the leader among them (The Brass, if you will) looks up at him, shaking before jumping onto the one right behind it. Then that one jumps onto another, stacking onto each other until they stand taller than Kieran.

”They’re trying to intimidate you.” Tam explains. ”Pokémon usually answer to people they trust and people they respect. Usually you’d try to strike a balance between the two.”
