Night had fallen over Slateport City, embracing the bustling metropolis with a cold darkness that sharpened every light and deepened every shadow. Far in the Outskirts, away from the other districts' noise and glamor, Bishop waited on the loading bay behind an abandoned grocery store. He wore nondescript clothing in muted shades, nothing that would make him stand out, though not a single other soul lurked on that street.[break][break]

Sipping a can of soda, the white-haired man watched for any unusual movement and kept his ears tuned for approaching noise. Instructions from higher up the chain had placed him on that loading bay to await the arrival of a contact. She would be driving a police van, his superiors had said, with cages of sedated Pokémon in the back. A shipment of Yampers recovered from an illegal breeding mill.[break][break]

Mention of the police van had prompted Bishop to ask questions, unusual behavior for him. That was when he learned the contact was a corrupt cop from Fortree City. She'd be wearing her uniform, too. Bishop found himself unsettled by the arrangement, even if he was familiar with the concept of corrupt cops. There had been plenty in Lumiose, after all.[break][break]

Still. A man on the run from the police tended to avoid meeting them.[break][break]

The sound of a vehicle's rumbling engine reached Bishop's ears. He sat straighter in his chair, straining to hear, eyes narrowed to peer into the darkness. Finally, he saw them: a pair of headlights, coming closer.[break][break]

He stood. Time to get to work.

The van rumbled down the empty stretch of road, high beams bright and cutting shafts of light through the dark as she navigated the Slateport outskirts–no longer her home, but still a place that Blue knew like the back of her hand. She didn’t care for the night driving, let alone having to come all the way down from Fortree. It made her restless. Even more restless to know little more than a name for the man she was set to be meeting for the secondary leg of this run.[break][break]

She felt a bit bad for the little pack of yamper in the back of the van, all sedated and sleeping soundly. They were being shuttled from one bad situation to what was likely another. And hey, a tiny part of her could commiserate. Or a big part, really. But Blue’s empathy only stretched so far, and at the end of the day, she’d do her job.[break][break]

Any guilt she felt rolled off of her shoulders, and fell to the wayside. Ignored, untouched.[break][break]

So what?[break][break]

She just wanted to make the drive and get the transfer taken care of so that she could then set the back half of her job into motion. The part where she acted like she’d been doing the right thing, and it was someone else who’d overtaken her. She could make her sad sob story report to the chief back in Fortree, and return to her crummy apartment to crash.[break][break]

One cannot live on redbulls alone. Or so some might say, but given that Blue’s blood was probably about seventy-five percent energy drink and twenty-five percent sheer spite at that point, she was out to beat those odds. Mostly, she just wanted to be out of her stupid uniform.[break][break]

At least the guy was punctual. She had to admit as much when she found him exactly in place as she rolled to a stop behind the old market.[break][break]

Before bothering to get out of the van, Blue threw the gear into park and rolled down the driver’s side window. Her arm propped on the empty frame, cigarette dangling between her fingers. Ruby eyes watched him coolly, reserved. “Bishop.” More an assumed statement than a question of his identity. She lifted the cigarette back to her lips, orange tip burning in the low light.

The van parked alongside the loading bay. Bishop approached as the driver's side window rolled down and a blue-haired woman leaned out. In the darkness of the night, with only the nearby street lamps and the vehicle's headlights providing illumination, he found it difficult to pick out her finer features. She seemed younger than him, however. Young and tired.[break][break]

"That's me," he confirmed after she stated his name. "You must be Blue."[break][break]

And sure enough, she wore a uniform. The sight put him on edge, warning sirens going off in his skull and telling him to flee. But he forced a casual, relaxed demeanor and an easy smile instead. He had to trust his superiors.[break][break]

Bishop's gaze wandered to the back end of the van, though he made no move toward it. Blue would have to exit and unlock the back doors. "A shipment of Yampers, right?" he asked.

“Sure am.” She didn’t offer any pleasantries. They were there to do a job, right? So they should get it over with. Though, admittedly it was nice to not be dealing with someone concerned with justice or the importance of procedure and due diligence.[break][break]

Pulling the handle, Blue slipped out of the van. She dropped the cigarette on the ground and stamped it out underfoot, then stretched herself out, fingers linking as she stretched her arms up above her head. “Damn, that’s a drive.”[brealk][break]

She didn’t bother smoothing the wrinkles that had formed in her uniform throughout the duration of her ride. It was pointless, she’d just get them again. Plus, she didn’t really care about any actual formality. Wasn’t like she had to pretend out here in the rundown outskirts, nary another cop in sight.[break][break]

Blue slunk around the back to where Bishop stood, “Yeh, that’s right. A whole bunch.” Lucky none of them had evolved into boltund in the time since they’d been rescued. With a spare key, she unlocked the bolt and pulled the latch, easing the doors open. “All sound asleep and accounted for.” She was pretty sure.

Once the van's back doors were wide open, Bishop clicked on a small flashlight he'd been keeping in his jacket pocket. The beam of it fell upon the dozing Yampers, eight of them total, in three cages. He frowned at the sight of the Pokémon all crammed together. The police could have at least spread them out into more cages so they could move around a little.[break][break]

"Looks like all of them. Each one should sell for a high price to all the rich middle-aged ladies in Slateport and Mauville," Bishop confirmed. Clicking off the flashlight and pocketing it once more, he stepped into the van. "All right, lend me a hand here, will ya?"[break][break]

He tossed Blue a pair of rubberized safety gloves, because the combination of Electric-type Pokémon and metal cages was not great on the hands. After pulling on a pair for himself, he grabbed the first cage and slowly, carefully pushed it across the bottom of the van's floor until it reached the doors.[break][break]

"Lower this to the ground," Bishop instructed, still holding on to one side of it just in case it was too heavy for Blue to manage.

She didn’t really care all that much about any evaluation he might have of her handiwork–after all, she wasn’t the one who put them in the pens in the first place. She only gave them the sedatives necessary to keep them nice and sleepy for the drive. And if she had been the one to squish them all together, Blue probably wouldn’t have cared about any criticism leveled her way. Her job was to move them from point A to point B, by any means necessary. That’s it. Cushy, or cramped. or whatever.[break][break]

“Sounds like a dream come true,” she muttered back dryly. If spending their days on end in a doily-covered, potpourri-smelling old lady mansion was the ideal, then they’d have it made. “Yea, I gotcha.” Blue crowded the empty space behind him, catching the gloves tossed back at her and slipping them on.[break][break]

Blue said nothing in response to the order, only shot him a silent look before nodding. It wasn’t necessarily a matter of weight so much as the fact that the cage was a bit wider than her arm span. She managed after a bit of fumbling on how best to grip the kennel, fingers eventually curling in the grate on the underside, and then the mesh on one of the sides in an awkward sort of diagonal angle.[break][break]

Carefully as she could manage, it was set on the ground without much fanfare. Despite the sleepy yip from one yamper, the first batch remained fast asleep. Hopefully it stayed that way, but Blue was a firm believer in Murphy’s Law, so she wasn’t about to get her hopes up. “Next one.”

Bishop pushed the second crate across the van's floor, slowly, so as not to wake the Yampers. Once he was sure it was secure in Blue's hands, he let go and stood up straighter. Though the cages were a little too wide for her armspan, she seemed determined to pull them down from the van on her own.[break][break]

They could continue working in silence, exchanging only the words necessary for finishing the job. But Bishop was far too curious about the circumstances that brought a supposed upstanding member of the police force to illicit activity. Blue didn't seem much younger than him, either.[break][break]

"So you're a cop, huh?" he asked cautiously, still uneasy with the night's arrangement. "Why're you out here doin' this kinda work?" Rocket work, he meant.[break][break]

As he asked his question, he moved toward the third and final cage in the van, intending to keep working as they talked.

She pulled down the second crate, getting a better handle on it than the first crate. She didn’t mind the silence between them, but didn’t necessarily mind him speaking up when he did, either. It had already been a long drive by herself with nothing but her own thoughts to fill up the space.[break][break]

Still, his question had her eyes drifting over to him warily. “Yeah, guess so.” Really confident in that, huh? Really selling that bit, she was. Then her expression shifted, brow lifting as her fingers curled into the cage wiring.[break][break]

Blue didn’t make any sudden move to take down that crate and set it down with the others just yet, though. “Well, I wouldn’t say that I’m a cop doing this work.” One hand lifted to air quote her words. “The job is a placement for the sake of intel, that’s all.”[break][break]

In all honesty, she wasn’t much of a fan of the police force, either. But a gig was a gig, and Blue was just following marching orders. “Does that matter?”

Bishop's eyebrows raised at Blue's admission. So she'd been planted among the police force by Rocket to gather information and siphon it to the upper echelons. A measure of relief washed over Bishop. There were plenty of reasons to be a corrupt cop, but someone loyal to Rocket — as opposed to a wild card who did their own thing — made him feel better about the whole situation.[break][break]

"So you probably have access to all kinds of criminal records, task force information, plans, and shit," he mused as he jumped down from the van. "That sounds pretty cool, actually."[break][break]

And then an idea occurred to him. Blue was with the Fortree City Police Department, but that didn't mean the information at her disposal was restricted to only Fortree.[break][break]

"You got any intel on international happenings too, or just regional stuff?" Bishop asked casually as he reached out a hand to help her with the final cage.

From the way his expression shifted, the answer she gave him seemed to be one he wasn’t really expecting. Maybe it was the uniform skewing things, but Blue didn’t really think she looked much like the sort of person who stayed on the straight and narrow all that well. Or someone who was hellbent on the triumph of justice. Maybe she should take that as a compliment to her half-assed efforts to blend in among the actual officers who wanted to be on the force.[break][break]

Unfortunately, she didn’t really even have the genuine independence to do her own brand of vigilantism. No matter how autonomous she behaved, Blue was no more than a tethered hound to Rocket. Loyal because that sense of stability was offered to her. “Hm? Yeah, I do. Super useful, makes stuff like this possible.” She pointed at the cages. “Guess it is. Fills up my time, anyway.”[break][break]

She wasn’t about to admit it, but the assistance on the last cage was appreciated. Instead, she focused on the question he offered up. Her brows knit together, and she stared down at the yampers in hand as she thought about it.[break][break]

“Yeah, I think so. I mean, obviously there’s cases we’re sent if interpol thinks it’s pressing.” Her eyes flit back up to his, narrowing slightly, though it’s more curiosity than distrust. “Any reason you wanna know?”

Once all three cages were out of the van, Bishop closed the vehicle's back doors. Turning back to Blue, he asked, "You get anything from Lumiose City PD in the past few months? Somethin' about a dashing handsome rogue fleeing after a bit of arson?"[break][break]

A flash of a grin was enough indication that he was speaking about himself, but the smile quickly fell away as he waited for her response. After all, he hoped that her answer was 'no'. But if LCPD had contacted Interpol, there was a chance someone was in Hoenn hunting him down, and any information was better than none.[break][break]

At least all of his public records in Hoenn were under a false name, Ramsey Castle. Even with the help of Rocket's resident forger, Seraphine D’aureville, getting all of the necessary documents together had been a complicated effort. Bishop had no idea how many papers he needed to convince the public his false identity was a real, ordinary citizen.

Blue met the grin on his face with the slow rise of one brow. “Arson…” Good question. She had to hand it to him–maybe he hadn’t realized the opportunity beforehand to garner intel from her, but he was definitely capitalizing on it now, it seemed.

“So you’re on the lam, then,” she remarked. It was posed like a question, but lacked the upward intonation. Her mind racked the files and memos she’d been exposed to in the brief amount of time she’d been employed with Fortree PD. “Not that I can remember, but” her hand lifted to point at him. More in musing than some sort of confrontation, “that doesn’t mean there hasn’t been one.”[break][break]

Her arms folded across her front and her posture slouched, head rolling to the side to stretch out her neck. “I’m guessing you want me to see what I can dig up?” It wasn’t her currently assigned tasks, though she supposed it was sorta what she was there for, even if he wasn’t her direct superior.[break][break]

She’d probably want to know, if it were her. Identities were a funny thing–she didn’t even know her own original name. Assigned something as a kid based on no more than a medical bracelet.

Bishop couldn't help but laugh at Blue's revelation stated so bluntly. "More or less. If you wouldn't mind keepin' your eye out for anything, I'd appreciate it. You can usually find me at HQ, but if I ain't there, don't come lookin'. I'll find you instead."[break][break]

After all, one couldn't be too careful. Even if he and Blue worked for the same organization, he didn't yet know the extent of her loyalties.[break][break]

Picking up one of the Yampers' cages, Bishop nodded his head at the closed warehouse door. "Mind getting that for me?"

Laughter came easily to him. Blue was almost a bit envious of that. “There anything in particular I should make note of?” It was more or less an agreement without actually saying so. She didn’t press the vagueness of his availability. Mostly because she got it. She wouldn’t want to be sniffed out by someone at random, either.[break][break]

“Shouldn't something be in it for me, though?” she asked after a lull of quiet, frowning as she looked over at him. “It's not in my assigned tasks, after all. It would be off the books.” The problem was…Blue didn’t have some big quest, or even all that many wants. Her life was a bit painfully simple in that regard. Not that she was going to tell Bishop this.[break][break]

“Yeah.” She moved acquiesce, stepping around him to yank down the large metal pull handle so that the door would roll upward. “An extra large pizza, as many toppings as I want. A case of red bull, annnddd one, no actually two packs of cigarettes. That’s what I want.”[break][break]

Her hands shoved into her jacket pockets as she watched him, expression straight-faced and mostly unblinking. “Get me that, and I’ll keep you in the loop on what interpol’s been saying.”

The fact that Blue asked for more details indicated both her interest and her assent. Bishop found himself pleased to have made such a valuable connection. Whether it ended up any use, however, depended on a lot of factors: Blue's initiative, for one, and Lumiose's pursuit of him, for two.[break][break]

"Hmm, anything particular?" Bishop paused to consider. "Names of any cops involved in the manhunt, I guess — Interpol or otherwise. Where they're lookin'. If they suspect a man named Ramsey Castle."[break][break]

Bishop walked the short distance into the warehouse with the cage in hand. Blue's demand earned her yet another laugh as he lowered the cage onto the ground and stooped to make sure the Yampers remained undisturbed.[break][break]

"Fuck, man, I'd love all that. Pizza and Red Bull? Shit, I could go for that right now. Tell ya what, just give me the time and place and we'll make it happen."[break][break]

But first, there were two other cages to store before they could call it a night.
